Hi all. I am scheduled for arthroscopic surgery in a week and really need to take something for the pain. I cannot take anything containing aspirin until after the surgery and I don't know how Im going to make it. I have been diagnosed with torn meniscus and this was finally diagnosed after xrays failed to show anything and multiple cortisone injections. Over the past 6 monthIve tried all sorts of medication and realize that aspirin is all that helps. Any suggestions for nonaspirin pain relief? Im elevating and icing but not getting any relief. Im tired and getting depressed. Thanks Satine

I have had 2 meniscus tears that needed to be repaired. Don't know if you want to ask your Dr but my Dr gave me a perscription for prednisone which will help or ask him for pain pills which they will give you after your surgery anyway. Don't take any over the counter pills untill you ask your Dr about what you are taking as a lot of them affect your blood when you go for surgery. Good luck

Satine, you really should ask your medical professional but as far as I know, tylenol is it as far as allowable over the counter meds in the days immediately before surgery. Nsaids like Advil, Aleve aren't allowed either like the aspirin products. If you are really miserable, they would likely give you a prescription product to get you by if you ask.

DH worked for the first time in three weeks today! He's never been sick, never been hurt, and his work has him hiking off trail through timber 4 days a week - at 66 yrs old:). Xray of his knee showed nothing but some arthritis. MRI - at his insistence - showed a slightly torn meniscus, arthritis, bone swelling, and an old ACL injury that he didn't know he had.

I looked at the torn meniscus images at the surgeons office, really interesting - of course, not my knee. I hope you do well with the repair, sounds like very often quite successful if it hasn't healed itself.

I think you should find a Golden message board & ask there what type of pain she possibly still could be in even with pain & joint meds. What I wonder is what type of daily pain has she lived with since her surgery & how much worst has it gotten over the years. You say she's never walked far; so I wonder if she's always had some sort of pain. I've had my back fused & have lived with various amounts of pain. For people similar to me; the 1st 2 years are ok; then the pain starts to get worst. You go down the line of medications & at some point; they just don't work. I have no clue if dogs are similar We had German Shepards at the gas station. We got one as a puppy; then at some point; my dad took in an older male to keep her company. He was eventually put down due to hip problems. During her 13th year; her hips went too. My dad said that he'd love for our girl to have her 14th birthday then would put her down unless she really needed to go sooner. I still remember her birthday meal of steak & how I still wonder how much she suffered the last week or 2. We tried to be humane; but how humane can you be when they can't communicate? 27 years later; it still brings tears to my eyes. As far as heart & thyroid; a question I have are any of her current meds adding to it? Pain meds for humans carry a risk; they're catching up to my heart/body. I also would not do anything more then brushing teeth. A deep cleaning sounds insane to me. I could not put my older pet at any risk to clean teeth. The vet should be guiding you. If anyone is familiar with your breed & various health issues; you wonder why they suggest things like deep teeth cleanings. Hubs gram had a decent vet who helped her to be realistic for her last kitty companion. The vet told her he could do this & that but at this stage he was just prolonging things & he discussed the next step of letting her go. Not knowing the exact age of your Las has to be making all of this harder for you. Wiki says they usually live 11-12 years while other sites say up to 15. Wildchild, I think you're exactly right. (And that's brave of you to say, too.) My sister is bipolar, too. She is pretty good about taking her meds and staying in treatment, but the doctors have always had a hard time treating her. She is depressed most of the time, with periods of mania. She's tried virtually every drug they use to treat bipolar, plus several rounds of electroconvulsive therapy. Susan_on, that quote from Drew Pinsky was a lightning bolt for me. That's *exactly* what I think about her. She doesn't bring the problems on herself (kidney stones, car accident where the other driver was cited, etc.), but she is pleased when something happens, because it gets her attention and narcotic drugs. It's hard to judge someone else's level of pain, but I always wonder. For example, right now, there's something wrong with her hip. The doctors thought it might have been fractured, but it wasn't, and they are thinking it's just a pulled muscle. I watch her - it's painful for her to walk, and she has to adjust herself to sit comfortably, but she'll watch television for hours without pain. It doesn't seem any worse to me than when my hip bursitis flares up - quite painful, but certainly bearable. It would never occur to me to use narcotics for my bursitis, but she immediately reaches for them. Sue, yes, she's tried to get to the root of the pain. It isn't any one thing. At one point it was her shoulder. She had surgery, it got better ... and then there were kidney stones. They passed, she got better ... and then something happened to her hip. She goes to the doctor, does physical therapy, tries alternative therapies, but something else always goes wrong. And she always asks for something for the pain. I'm not at all convinced that getting rid of the pain would take care of the problem. In fact, I'm pretty much convinced otherwise. I don't know that she's physically addicted, simply because she doesn't get enough of the medication. She certainly has a tolerance to narcotic pain meds, but so does anyone who takes them long-term, addicted or not. She misses the drugs when they're gone, but never has any sort of detoxing symptoms. (I'm intimately familiar with those, from watching my addicted clients when they get locked up without their drugs.) She won't agree to hospitalization or treatment of any kind, and she's not at a point where she could be forced. She goes to work every day, her daughter is well cared-for (by me, when she's on a drug binge), she keeps her doctor appointments. No court would find that she was a danger to herself, and I don't really want to do that, anyway. I've spent a lot of years trying to save her from herself, and finally got it through my head that it's not helpful. Linda_in_Iowa, I spoke to my doctor yesterday, and she recommended the same thing as you did. I've got the name of a pain clinic, and I suggested that she go. We'll see.

Good gravy! Please go back and READ what I wrote. I did not say anything about you taking the dog to an emergency clinic. What I said was I amazed that your vet does not have emergency care or would direct you to an er clinic. I meant in general, I did not say you should take him to an er clinic in this instance. To clarify and I did forget to type this - I had it in mind (but that's as far as it got) I meant to say something about someone from your vet being available to at least talk to you (over the phone) and give advice. I never said anything about you taking him today to a er clinic. Also, if you will read, you'll see I also mentioned that I'm pretty rural myself. Alot of farms here also - cattle, horses (even llama farms) so even more reason one would think a vet had emergency service - or at least could be reached. I, personally, need to know where to go or who I could contact in case of an emergency with my pup. Really, if you just read what I wrote, you would have no need to feel insulted.

very high level of pain-nothing helps(well didn't try morphine). I had a long scary tooth story..not even Percocet helped. Was climbing up the walls. Slightly lower level of pain-Percocet Even lower but still high-Vicodin BTW I don't find them addicting at all as if the pain goes even a bit down-they especially Vicodin give me awful nausea. hate Vicodin. so I personally never take them the moment I can help that. I have a lot saved from all sorts of painful procedures..what if somebody breaks a bone or something? otherwise all these reactions to pills are highly personal. Have you ever had depressed mood from antibiotics? l I had..from two different ones already. And one of them I was given before several times and never had this side effect. Well now I do. So weird. I won't even start with other bad peculiar reactions to harmless over the counter stuff even..normal people take Melatonin to help them to sleep, I tried-and almost found myself in emergency room. Etc etc. I don't do well with pills, as a rule. Same with alcohol. low tolerance. on the other hand I take huge amount of Benadryl for example if I need to, and nothing bad happens. So it all is, again, very weird and personal. Lower pain-Ibuprofen. But. Advil is better than other forms of it. Why? no idea. just feel the difference, and feel it very well. and should be capsules.. Strangely I also find Tylenol totally useless. Add Aleve to that. And Motrin too. And Excedrin. Not taking these. But some people are not allowed to take Ibuprophen. My DD for example. She takes Tylenol if she has to. And yes, once I took too much of it, and it started hurting ..luckily the pain passed the next day, but got me scared all right. it's bad with migraines because this freaking Sumatriptan also makes me very nauseous. But you can't beat migraine with Advil. You just can't. And other pills they're not for that kind of pain. I take three Advils plus Sumatriptan then need to wait out this nausea thing..then it'll get somewhat better then better..if i caught it in time. I struggle to never take more than one Sumtriptan per day even though you're usually allowed to take two..no..I remember last time I took two..horrible. Oh wow long post. yet again. lol.

Thanks for the responses. I have tried tylenol and Im afraid it did nothing for the pain. I was getting relief with aspirin but of course thats out now. Im going to head out now and get a cane-hoping the support will help. These are the times when I really really miss my husband. Sorry, guess Im a little melancholy tonight. Satine

Have you tried any topical analgesic creams?
I have been having a lot of neck pain and today I found a topical cream on sale at our local pharmacy.
It is Arthritis Pain Relief with the main ingredient of capsaicin 0.1%. It is probably found at major pharmacies under a different name but the active ingredient will be capsaicin. (Capzasin-HP)
I was amazed how quickly it relieved my pain....much more effectively than oral medications.
It is worth a try.
Be sure to read the instructions before applying and wash your hands thoroughly afterwards.

I'm sending you a cyberhug. I know what you are going through. I've had arthroscopic knee surgery twice--the first time, I had both knees done at the same time. What was I thinking???? I didn't have a leg to stand on!

After suffering through the pain you are having now, the surgery will be easy. The postoperative therapy is not fun, but it is necessary.

When I had my arthroscopy, my dr. gave a Rx. pain medication, I think Celebrex which worked well. Your doctor will give you a rx. for what is appropriate for you to take post-op.

I have a sensitivity to anything aspirin-related.

When I injured my hip, the doctor recommended the arthritis formula Tylenol, 650mg., every eight hours. That's the strongest one they make.

It helps me and it might be worth a try.

Also, I injured my shoulder in the past and a cortisone injection helped a lot.

Aspirin is one of the most effective things for me too and I wasn't supposed to use it, ibuprofen or naproxen after the surgery last fall because of the blood thinning aspects. I used extra strength acetaminophen but recommendations advised taking no more than 4,000 milligrams of acetaminophen a day and now they're dropping that to 3,000 mg so you can take 6 pills a day, essentially 3 doses without risking liver issues.

Do other things relieve the pain? Ice works for some but it seldom helps for me. Heat works better than ice in most cases for me. Sometimes a hot shower helps massage the area and it can be helpful.

Note: If you ever have to take prednisone, ask the MD for a sleeping aide like Ambien. Prednisone 'wires' me so I can't sleep. They have no problem prescribing Ambien, but you'll have to ASK; they just aren't thinking of the side effects of Pred.

I can't tolerate aspirin anymore. IME Tylenol is a *useless* placebo. Aspirin is proven to relieve inflamation.

Ugh, I feel your pain. I'm not supposed to take ibuprofen due to it causing me stomach lining issues after taking it for years for cramps. Tylenol/acetomin. doesn't do a thing for me! I might as well just take a skittles. Ibuprofen and NSAIDS are the only over the counter meds that work.

I refuse to take narcotics on a regular basis, so I'm playing around with other things. My friend spent a lot of time in Nepal and she just told me the women in her host family there drink the water from boiled cumin seeds for cramps, so guess what I'll be trying this month? lol.
