Does anyone have Vonage??

Keep seeing the commercial for it. When it says broadband required, they just mean an internet connection, right? Can I keep Verizon for my DSL, and have them (Vonage) as my phone??

I don't think so. To my knowledge, DSL is different from broadband. I think DSL is simply dial-up - faster than regular dial up, but still dial-up.

My son has Vonage and it is not all the great anyway. I wouldn't have it.

DSL is broadband....not dial-up. It's a digital line that travels on your home phone connection.

However, I can't see why you would piggyback Vonage onto DSL, since you need the phone service for the DSL, anyway.

Katkin, they had a package deal for high speed internet, up to 3 computers I think, at $45 per month and it does not block your phone line, it lets you call out and receive calls when on the internet. We are getting the first 6 months for like $20. This offer was made to us because we also have Comcast cable in 4 rooms. As for the nextels, those seem to be the phones of choice wherever all 3 of us work, so we added my phone that is not company paid and we are pleased with the service.

My neighbor had it and dropped it after a few months because of the heavy cable internet usage in our area. He was using it through his cable company. When the internet signal is not heavily used everything is fine. But when traffic gets heavy, things slow down. And so did his phone transmission. It would cut out a word or two at a time. So he went back to his regular service. I have always heard that cable internet can be affected by heavy usage in the area, but had never heard anyone complain about the side-effects of that, until now. DSL internet service is not supposed to suffer from any degradation with a lot of others online, but it is not as readily available in most areas like cable is, either. So, its effectiveness in your area may be good, may not be. I don't know if there is any way of knowing without trying it.

Well like I said above back in January I ordered on and it finally came today 2 months later after two frustrating on line sessions with their help desk. They screwed up the first time by sending it to someone with the same name in a different city. The second time I called they said that the new order they'd placed for me had been "cancelled" so they opened a 3rd order. That was about 2 weeks ago and like I said I got it today. It installed really easily and although I've only used it about 5 times, testing to friends across the country it works extremely well. The clarity is very good everyone said. I'm in Canada and they don't have any Canadian area codes for giving out numbers so you have to pick a US area code and it assigns your Magic Jack a phone number automatically in that area code. I chose Michigan which is closest to me so whenever I phone someone on it it looks like the call is coming from the 810 Michigan exchange. When Canadian area codes become available they say they will let you change your number once for free. So far I think it works and after a week if I'm still happy with it I'm going to cancel my $20 a month long distance carrier. We make a lot of long distance calls. Also it's cheaper than having a second line as one person can be chatting on the Magic Jack phone and your regular phone is available for calls.

Not wanting to rain on anyone's parade, but a word of warning for the unwary. Sounds great doesn't it? 10 different cultivars on one understock. Can I let you in on some practical aspects of these offers, made to entice those who often know little better than to part with their money. It is usual to put 2 buds onto a standard understock. One, to give a bit of insurance should one bud not take, and two, to provide a balanced head, given that the buds are implanted on opposite sides of the stock, one slightly below the other. Usually both take and to begin with we have an acceptably robust plant. However after a few years one of the scions (usually the lower) does better than the other, which eventually dies. The lower scion gradually expands to enclose the entire head of the understock, in effect starving the upper scion of nourishment, and it dies. Very rarely is it the other way around. If you apply this logic to stock budded up with 10 cultivars, it follows that in 10 years you will have a 3' standard of the lowest budded cultivar. In addition to this, the cultivars mentioned are not vigorous enough to make a balanced plant at 6' height. They do have names of popular and reliable cultivars to lure the punters. Iceberg and Bonica are OK at tops 4' height understocks, while 6' understocks are usually reserved for the weeping or procumbent cultivars, to give that much larger, weeping and/or umbrella form. I have DSL and I have Vonage. It works great and it's a much better deal on phone service ;0) The only thing you should know is that if your internet goes down so does your phone service.

You will need to check with your ISP to make sure it works in your area or that they won't/don't have problems with it. HTH ;0)

I'm glad to stand corrected.....love learning new stuff. I honestly thought DSL was internet through a phone line.....

DSL is a data transfer line through your telephone line and usually provided through your local SBC/AT&T company.

My only fear with the all digital and wireless world is when power is down, all communication is down. In case of power down, your only source is your cellular phone. If the whole town or area is in crisis, cellular lines can get quite tied up and if you have an emergency... well, you got the idea.

True story: During hurricane Rita a few years back, remember the traffic in Houston that you saw on the news? Well, being stuck in that traffic, people had nothing else to do but chatting away on the phone... the cellular phones. All the lines were tied up. My family couldn't get through my cellular line until I reminded them to call me on my regular home phone.

Good thing, I had kept a corded telephone with SBC/AT&T as a back up because the wireless phone was no good neither when power was out.

SBC/AT&T has a back up unit that allows the phone to ring and function as usual. So, I was able to communicate with my family still.

Another event with cellular phones was during the terrorists attacking London. The government cut off cellular communication channels to the public in order to give priority usage for the government. However, the public was still able to use text messaging for communication.

I strongly advise everyone to keep an old corded phone handy. They're so inexpensive nowadays, it's worth keeping one in case of emergency.

However, if you chose Vonage or any other digital telephone system, remember, if you cannot call out with your cellular, try text messaging.
