Well, our landlord just informed us she will not renew our lease in Sept. unless we get rid of our 2 dogs, 2 cats. We've been renting from them for 6 years, at that time pets were allowed. TWO MONTHS ago, she sold the land we were on and moved the mobile homes to another piece of land they own. We didn't want to move, cost us money, etc. Now she says no pets! The only reason we stayed renting from them, is because we could NOT find anywhere else we could afford that was decent. That puts more burden on me!!! It was SOOOO hard for us to physically move, as DH has major liver problems and cannot do much. The only help we had was our son and a couple of his friends. This puts me in a deeper depression than I can imagine. Please say a prayer we'll find something, because I cannot give away my 15 year old chihuahua, and my Sadie that was given to me last Mother's Day from Rachel!!!

Jamie-I'm so sorry to hear this.Do you rent the mobile home or just the land it is on? I can't believe the landlord would change the pet rules after such a long time.Is there any way you can appeal it? What will you do? I hope the landlord changes their mind and lets you keep your pets.I will keep you in my prayers.(((((Jamie)))))

I guess in reading this thread I just wonder why anything has to be said about people doing things wrong in the first place. Why not just give advice if it is asked for and let people be if they don't ask? Besides, who is to say what is the right or the wrong approach to doing things? Gardening is one of those things where it seems like rules are meant to be broken. I know a lot of what I suggest to people is contrary to the advice and practice of most people on GW. Does that make it "wrong?" I don't think so, but many might say it did. Now what if I told you that folks from the University of Maryland Extension were so impressed by my garden knowledge that they tried to recruit me into their master gardener program? (I said "no" because I expect to leave the country around the end of this year). Does that make my methods right because some of the folks from the local extension were impressed by my expertise? I don't think so. At most, I can say that my methods allow me to achieve my goals. When I first started, the goal was simple: grow some tomatoes. They weren't great, but I did get a few tomatoes. And I had achieved my goal. As time has gone on, I've added herbs and other plants, and even developed somewhat of a speciality in hot orange habaneros (and no, not all orange habs are hot--you can dilute the heat a lot by using too much water), and become more ambitious. This year my goal is to see how far down I can reduce my produce buying. All my friends and (I think) everyone around me in my immediate neighborhood knows I grow edibles. If people ask me for advice, then I give them whatever suggestions I can. But if they ignore me, I don't care, and I probably won't even pay enough attention to them to notice. If people don't ask me for that advice, then I also don't care. I figure that half the fun of horticulture is the process of discovering these things for oneself. :) And I have enough of my own stuff going on. Realtor told my sister that her rose garden, perennial beds, blueberry patch, vegetable garden - all hindrances to selling because people worried about upkeep. She's 81 and did it all single handed but the purchasers have found they can't keep up with it and it has mostly gone back to weeds or is mowed. When we sold my parents' home, the first thing the buyers did was yank out the double lilac hedge along the road - now they get all the dust and noise from the traffic which, presumably, was what they wanted! They also mowed down all the roses and ditto the perennial beds. Lawn was what they wanted and cropped weeds was what they got. They did leave the Hopa crab in front which still stops traffic every spring but they mowed into oblivion the mat of grape hyacinths under it. Just as my neighbors carefully mowed a big swatch of primroses down by the stream until they had eradicated every one. Those primroses needed no care - just not to be mowed. But they had to go anyway. The same neighbors tried to eradicate the crocus in the front lawn but most of them were too small to hit the mower blades. What's with this obsession with grass?

Thank you again everyone for the kind words. :) Where am I going to put all of these ? That certainly is the $64,000.00 question !!! I counted yesterday: 31 different types in pots 3 of those pots are Andrew 33 pots total 3 different types in the ground 3 Elegans (stationary, not moving them) 2 Wide Brim 1 Tiny Tears 5 NOID in ground 3 clump #1 3 clump #2 1 ½ clump #3 1 mature mini no ID 1 mature mini no ID TONS of Elegans seedlings we dug up out of the front bed and put in the back. That is all the hosta on the property. So I have about 31 places to find for all the new additions. This does not include the 40+ I have still “to order” on my wishlist. As of today 7/29/12 I have only one bed clear. Initially I feel like I want to panic . . . but the flip side (for me at least) is I am not necessarily in any hurry to get them in the ground. I would almost prefer to let them get a few years in pots where I can coddle them and take my time finding just the right spot. So, in theory I believe I have enough room for them all (plus more) but it may be a good long time before they get placed in a permanent position. When I started this project I knew it would be a long hard road to beautification. My goal is to work with as much already existing in the ground as feasibly possible. I will be ripping out a lot of established shrubs and moving existing perennials, but more so to rearrange and start over. There is an existing design that was originally landscaped into the yard, so I will be working with that and adjusting lines and height as needed. But for the most part I am settled into a very long project with no real agenda. I will of course keep you all updated as to any progress that is made. This year though is rather uneventful since I am still in the process of amending and clearing out the first bed so that I can be ready for a spring planting. Here are some glamour shots of “The Jungle”. This first one is a pic of me in the process of clearing out the first bed. These were all taken in early June. And here is basically the jist of what it looked like before I mowed it all to the ground . . . The next grouping are of the section of yard that leads up to the side porch. This I don't think ever had anything planted in it. There is a bed separating the two sections of the front yard so you can't get to this part without going around the house and coming off the side porch. The Hosta in the picture are of seedling Elegans and one of my MIL NOID. It is still too young and neglected to pitch here for proper ID. So all in all I def have enough space to keep me plenty busy for a very long time. Plus we are having an arborist come out in the winter and trim a few trees that desperately need it as well as remove a few that are too close to the house. So there will still be a nice canopy but I will have a lot more light coming through starting in 2013 and that is also something I am going to keep my eye on for plant placement. Momto4kids - Hopefully you're still following this thread. I remember way back when you got your counters rehoned on site. A couple of years ago, DD made a batch of "lemonade" on our island, squeezing an entire bottle of lemon juice on it in the process. I have lived with it, but I had a marble restoration company come out to give us a quote - we are replacing the mantle on the fireplace in our DR and need to have the slate refinished - so I figured while we were at it, we'd do the counter. I recall you saying it was fairly inexpensive to do - the first company, who apparently does a lot of work for an Ivy League college, came out and quoted us $2000 for the job (and told us it was a 2 day job). My jaw hit the floor. The next company quoted us $450 for both the fireplace and the counter and said it would take 3 hours or so. Do you mind telling me how much it cost you? I want the job done right, but I don't want to get taken, either. TIA!

Jamie I don't know the statutes where you live but if the landlord has allowed you to keep the dogs for some period of time he/she may not be able to change the terms now. Even at the end of a lease when a landlord has the opportunity too change the terms it often does not apply to things like pets that were allowed previously.

Check to see if your area has landlord/tenant mediation available. Also get a copy of the Tenant Law book for your state. Nolo press has them.

Jamie, you and your family definitely have my prayers on this. Moving with little or no help would be my situation right now if anything would cause me to have to do it. I pray that it all works out for you with the least amount of problems possible.

Cynical me thinks the landlord is trying to find a way to get you out so she can charge higher rent to someone else. It seems that everywhere now, people in mobile homes renting the land are being squeezed out due to greed of the landowners. I do hope you can go to mediation, or at least contact a newspaper columnist in your area; bad press might make her back down. I'm pretty sure she doesn't really care whether you have pets or not, but rather is trying to find a way to get more money. I'm so sorry you have to deal with this now, of all times. I so hope you can find someone to help you stay in your home with your pets!

Jamie, first of all, let me say that my heart goes out to you. You certainly don't need this, on top of what has happened in your life.

That said, let me tell you about a conversation I recently had with my brother. He lives in a very nice condo in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. It is a "no pets" building. He mentioned talking to a neighbor who was walking his dog. I was surprised and told him I thought there was a "no pets" rule. He said a number of elderly tenants have pets because the "Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)" trumps the "no pets" regulation. Apparently, if your doctor writes a letter stating that you need a pet for health reasons (which includes emotional health), you are covered by the ADA.

This may not help you keep all of your pets, but it should certainly give you the needed ammunition to keep Sadie.

This is a tricky situation. The landlord is closing the present property and moving the mobile homes to a different location. Possibly, the landlord believes he is starting a "new" business and is taking this opportunity to set new rules that he has wanted for some time. It is complicated by him re-using the existing homes. I can only guess what rule applies in this case. You need advice from a real estate/rental laywer.

You do have another option. You have until September to find another place. The landlord has given a 3 month notice about a change of location and new rules.

Sjerin - When you start paying the ever increasing property taxes, mortgages and liability insurance, you can talk about "greedy" landowners... It is an investment that the owner is entitled to benefit from.

OP - Perhaps the climate regarding renters and pets has changed in the last six years. Or maybe you can afford to buy something with interest rates so low. Good luck!

It looks like the landlord has other plans for the property. I don't think it will help to cite this or that legislation. The landlord has the upper hand -- deciding what rent to charge. It could become some enormous amount.

Hoping you find something EVEN BETTER! As nycefarm says, interest rates ARE low now. Can you talk to a realtor? You might be able to do a 'rent-to-own' contract if sellers are as hard up there as they are in my area. My late mother sold two homes that way years ago.

I am sorry that this has happened. Your post doesn't mention if you own the mobile home or rent it - if you rent it that would certainly help as you wouldn't have to sell it. If you rent I would immediately start looking for another place to live that clearing accepts pets - BUT - in the meantime I suggest you speak with your vet (also he/she might know of rentals that allows pets) to determine if it comes down to D day if you could board your pets at a reduced rate - some vets will do this in emergency situations. Of course if you know people who you would trust with your pets while you attempt to find other accommodation that would be very helpful as well. I would be frantic about my pets as well. Unfortunately I live in Toronto so can't really help.

So sorry to hear this, and hope you're able to work out a solution. I couldn't get rid of a pet, either, and especially not in your situation.
