I Am Quitting ..........

I am quitting for today! Got up early and Amber and I went to some rummage sales. I came home and watched Alyssa for about 3 hours. I needed some things from the grocery so Amber and I went into town and also picked up lunch from Taco Bell. I have been cooking most of the day it seems. I made the Strawberry Dessert Cake, deviled eggs, potato salad, coleslaw, cucumber salad, cauliflower casserole, corn casserole, and fixed part of the stuff for the taco salad for tomorrow. We are having a pitch in dinner tomorrow at Amber and Mike's. We did not get to have Father's Day or Randy's birthday so tomorrow we hope to celebrate it. I did get a few things at the rummage sales. A Kitchen Aid large spatula $.25, a pair of clip on earrings for $.25, a plastic lock top egg carton $.50, small cutting board, new in package, a Betty Crocker one for $.50, some new in the bottles hand soap for a dollar each and probably a couple other things that have slipped my mind for now. It has been a pretty day but I have been inside most of the time. It is sunny and 75 out now. What have the rest of you been up too?

Thanks for the replies. Im not sure what to make of the figs slow progress, by all accounts they love hot weather, and even if they didn’t the last 2 weeks have been fairly mild in comparison to the first two weeks with temperatures sitting between 25-30oC (77-86F), only getting above 30 once, which should be fairly ideal. Fertilising may be an issue, although they have been getting their half strength solution quite regularly, sometimes 2x a week. If it isn’t going to hurt them I can give them a full strength measure at their next watering and see if that kicks them into action. If I could make a guess, I would say it comes down to water, since the plants wilted whilst the soil feels damp to touch (at least in the top few cms) I would say there is possibly patches of dry mix or, as I left some of the original soil mix around the root ball, this may have dried out, or isn’t staying wet. I have been silly and haven’t once checked with a dowel or anything, but believe the soil is probably quite wet now as last week we had a few days solid rain in a row. If this theory is correct then hopefully it should become evident quite quickly as the plants will start putting out growth again (I hope). This morning, despite being watered last on Saturday, all my pots feel wet, almost soaked, right on the top. After work I will stick a skewer in and see if this is the case through the whole mix. My other thoughts were that I had been over fertilising and the plants could not take up water, but I just don’t know that a high enough level of salts could have built up in such a small amount of time, especially since at each watering I let a fair bit of water flow out the pots. @shazaam I am fertilising only with the regular miracle grow for all plants, with some added vinegar and Epson salts for the blueberries. I am not sure what N source is used, but will check and see if it ammonia or nitrate based. I have been searching for a soluble acid loving formula, but although it is on their website I haven’t been able to locate in stores. Perhaps if it is nitrate based I will see if I can find any ammonia based product somewhere. I added some slow release acid loving Osmocote when mixing, which is likely to have an ammonia base, but I am sure someone stocks a soluble somewhere in my city…

Hi Mark, we're also in PSL - near Airoso & St. James. I don't do veggies but I do have one idea for you. My husband and I used to own a Greenhouse/Nursery/Florist back in the late 80s and we found an amazing product called SuperThrive. It used to be hard to find but I saw it at Lowe's and Walmart recently. The product was developed to help increase the harvest for vegetables (or any plants maybe?) but we discovered that it is incredible at completely eliminating the shock of transplanting. Just a few drops in a gallon of water. We discovered this quite by accident. We used to rent out our ficus trees for weddings. You may know that if you just look at a potted ficus tree wrong, it will drop all its leaves, just moving it from one corner of a room to another would throw it into hysterics. You can imagine how ours felt being thrown into a van to travel to a wedding and back again the same day! We used to have to rotate trees so that the traumatized ones could re-grow their leaves between weddings. One day my husband thought to use the SuperThrive on a group of trees just before they headed into the van and they didn't lose their leaves at all! Since then, we've used it for everything. I think it might have prevented the leaf-drop in your banana trees. I hope this helps your garden this fall/winter! I'm going to try out your pepper idea to see if I can discourage some of our many rabbits - our greyhounds are quite entertained by the rabbits who seem to virtually live in our back garden. They sometimes come right up to the door and peek in at the dogs. It's fun until you realize they've eaten every single viola seedling and half your impatiens!! Urggg. I'm trying again (with chicken wire) this fall. By the way, I followed the link to your FB album and "friend requested" you. Your work looks quite professional so far! Great photos. All those ranges would basically be considered "pro ranges". "For the money" the NXR is the best deal by far, there are of course many other stoves just as good and even better in some respects but for $2000 nothing else comes close. We have had ours for 17 months now with no issues, looks great, cooks fantastic with all 4 burners being both super low simmer and 15K BTU, nice size oven, convection, Infrared broiler, nice thick heavy duty stainless oven racks, heavy duty cast iron burner grates, door does not get hot. What's not to like especially for just a $100 or so more than a Sears Kenmore that is not even remotely as nice.

This is a follow-up to my post of April 23. I received my 9-3/4" Falk saucier today, almost a month from the time I ordered it on eBay. Just about the time I was getting antsy about not having received it, I got an email message from the vendor, telling me that the manufacturer had had trouble getting handles, and that was the reason for the delay. A few days later there was another message saying that the pan had been shipped, and I received it ten days after that message. It was well packed, and looks and feels like it would survive being run over by a tank. It's quite heavy, which is what I expected---no single-handed tossing of ingredients! I'm on the short side (5'4"), and find the angle of the pan's handle a bit high; however, this isn't the first time I've had that problem, and can cope with it. On the whole, I'm happy with my purchase (obviously, I haven't cooked anything with it yet, but don't anticipate any surprises there). Given the price of copper cookware, I think this was a reasonable transaction for a new pan. I didn't get the copper lid, which I think is a frivolous expense; a glass lid from another pan fits this one just fine. ---Margaret

You didn't leave too many things for others to pitch in, did you? That's a LOT of food! All you're lacking is a meat and a drink. And it all sounds delish, too.

Yeah, put your feet UP and take a break, lady! You've done more than your fair share, sounds like.

Home alone tonight, just pickin for food. And you with all that grub! Geeeeeez! I'm building a recipe webpage, spent most of the day on it. It's a lotta work getting all the buttons aligned and set with the links from page to page. Long way from done! Still have several pages to do, then I can add the recipes! LOL

We had 3 house showings today, lunch with eldest DS & DDIL, shopping with them because we had to be out of the house for showings, then tonight we signed the sale papers. Tomorrow we have 5 rentals to look at about 90 mins. from our house. We're relocating to live closer to our 9 week old granddaughter.

That's what I was thinking, Flamingo! Sounds like she did everything herself. Yesterday I had a pretty lazy day, then I went out late in the afternoon to pull weeds and took the firepit out and put it on the patio. I tried to start a fire and then Alex took over after he started to mow the grass. The grass never got finished because he was playing with the firepit instead. And of course, it rained again overnight so it's not going to get done today either.

I'm going to work on cleaning the sunroom today. I have to wash all the covers and put away the Christmas ornaments that I left out there. Then put together the little table I got last week for the patio. We got an umbrella to go with the table but the table is tall and Lauren took the umbrella out last night and it looks too short on the bottom to use with the table. It has a crank that stops it short. Oh, well, guess we'll just use it near the table. The worse thing I have to do is cut up the cardboard boxes that the firebox and table came in. They're huge and I hate having to do that.

Could you please post the Strawberry Dessert cake recipe or e-mail it to me?
My grandson is coming to visit and loves strawberries and we live in an area where the major crop is strawberries. We will be celebrating his birthday while he is here.

Strawberry Cake Dessert

1 box white cake mix
1 cup or 8 ounces mini marshmallows
2 (6 ounce) packages frozen strawberries, thawed or 4 cups chopped fresh strawberries
Sugar, enough to sweeten berries
1 box strawberry flavored gelatin

Mix cake mix as directed on package. Sprinkle marshmallows in bottom of a greased 9 x 13 baking pan or dish. Put cake mix over the marshmallows. Add the one box of strawberry flavored gelatin with the sweetened strawberries on top of the cake batter. Bake at 350 degrees for 45 to 50 minutes or until done. The marshmallows will come to the top and make its own frosting and strawberries will go to the bottom. Good served with whipped cream.

Sounds like a great day. I love garage sales. You got some great stuff. Last year I bought an outdoor water fountain for $2, got it home and it didn't work. I was just too hot and tired to return it, so it went in the trash, exactly where it belonged.
