Baby chick is Sick
Comments (11)All the extras are not for heat, it is so they get a number that will survive the first 48 hours leaving you with the amount that you ordered. This saves them having to credit or ship replacements. Most of the times you'll keep loosing chicks after the guarantee time is up. Out of the last 1400 chicks I've ordered in the past 3 years only 4 were lost. One died from smothering during shipping, two were lost to a rat, the last one due to being stepped on after being dropped. There are only two different tests you can do yourself, but they are for Pullorum (you'll need to go to a 1 day school to be certified-check with you County Cooperative Extension Office) and the other is for the level of e-coli in their poo (this requires a hand counter and a microscope-even a toy one will do). You'll have to learn what e-coli looks like and learn their acceptable levels. E-coli levels can be lowered by feeding probiotic rich feeds or you can buy an additive for their water, one brand is called Fastrack-but there are many brands out there. It is a powerful preventive measure the small poultry keeper can cheaply employ to prevent 7 out of 9 common poultry ailments. Many of these ailments won't kill your birds but will lessen there productivity, be it weight gain in meat birds or eggs in layers. It sounds like you run a clean joint there, when can I move in? 'LOL' Giardia is from drinking water that has been contaminated by animal waste run-off. In dogs there are many natural ways to treat/prevent this. Most find it simpler to vaccinate for it. It is so important if you have water sources to not allow large animals free access to it. It is not only your water but the water of everyone downstream from you. It is so easy to create a reservior (tank) that is feed thru a pipeline from that water source to a reservoir that your animals can drink from. This reservoir can be easily designed to allow one way water flow as not to contaminate the water downstream. When your stream is "yukky" call your county health office. They will back track and find who is the source of this and will take steps to prevent this in the future. Fresh water is important for your birds. This water should be placed in heavy shade to keep water borne organisms at or below safe levels. This is the #one cause of illness in poultry....See Morebaby chick coop bedding
Comments (5)well I suggested the bucket because they are in a smaller space that can be heated for the first couple of weeks but really I am not sure if this is a neccessity. I move mines outside to the pen tomorrow if it finished. I have used hay in the bucket but when I put them in the pen I plan to use the pine shavings. they are messy little buggers. You mentioned old hay. if there is mold on it I do not think that is going to be safe. mold is bad for every thing. I don't see any reason why you could not use the leaves but will it control odors? are they absorbant? And what happens when they get wet? My experience with leaves are when they get wet they turn into a soggy mess. I said the pine shavings were $6 but today I brough a smaller bag and it was $3. wishing you well...See MoreHappy Easter Babies
Comments (9)Thank you. Yes, there were some little beaks still hatching. Every single one of her eggs hatched. I'm so proud of her. I can't believe they hatched on Easter morning. I was about to give up on her hatching eggs lol. She has been out there sitting on those eggs forever and I kinda lost track of how long it had been but it seemed like way tooo long. Lou you want one of my broody hens? I think it must be the sulphur well water (haha) but they all keep going broody in pairs lately. A few weeks ago 2 of my key west hens hatched chicks on the same day. Today 2 other hens who were fighting over the same nest box hatched out chicks together..niether one of them wanted to give up thier spot so they are now sharing chicks. Todays double broodies: Key west hens that hatched chicks the same day. At least they had the decency to have thier own nest boxes lol. I am also hatching some chicks in my incubator. I have some more very rare Blue Birchen Marans hatching, blue wyandottes, and white orpingtons. Lenette...See MoreBaby Chicks
Comments (3)I got my baby chicks in the mail May 3, along with ducks and geese, but I ordered from Cackle Hatchery. Even though they had been in the mail an extra day, I only lost two ducks (very sad) and on the second day I lost a chick, but otherwise things have been going great. We got a mix of chicks too, and now they have most of their wing feathers I'm able to recognize some of them. lol Some are barred rock, white rock, cinnamon queen or red star . . . Not sure about all of them, but we'll see what they turn out to be. Ducks: I have 1 khaki campbell, 1 Cayuga, and 2 that are probably either Fawn runner or white peking. and my Geese, 2 that are either White Emden or White Chinese and 2 that are either Tolouse or African. The water birds are lot more messy, but they've been a lot of fun and they'll keep my weeds and bugs down a lot. We've moved everyone out to the 'coop' already--it's really a shed with a window, we haven't added nests or roosts or the chicken door yet, but it's early days yet. The water birds go out to the enclosure that will be the lean to-when we finish the dang thing, but only during the day. It's still a bit cool at night for them to be out, and while our setup is safe enough from daytime preditors, it wouldn't hold up against Racoons. Now we're trying to figure out how we're going to get t-posts into the ground when it is filled with rocks. So far we've had no luck getting it more than a few inches down and a post hole digger isn't intended to dig up rocks more than 10 inches across. *sigh* lol Heather J...See More- 8 years ago
