depending on your house style and decorating, I saw recently at Lowes a product that looked just like the antique tin type ceilings, it was a peel and stick product and they had used it as a backsplash in one of the kitchen models, it looked awesome, looked just like the real thing and it came in different finishes.
They also had some kits that had real tile and glass tiles that were on a peel and stick backing, you just peel it off stick the sections of tile to the wall and then apply grout which I think they had a special one for the kit. For a small area it would be very easy to do and look just like a pro did it.

I would be worried that the floor tiles would not stay stuck in an area like that.

they also carry at Lowes a real thin luan type wood that has bead board imprinted on it so it looks just like old bead board but is much thinner and easy to cut and apply.

Joann, they have do-it-yourself classes at HD. If you call the store and find out when they will be having the next one, it's free and you can ask all kinds of questions. They can help you figure out which would be easiest for you (or maybe give you an estimate to have it done at a price you can't resist). I like the sound of the bead board that Ravencajun mentioned. But then, I'm nuts about bead board.

Definitely go to Home Depot or Lowe's - you won't believe all the selections. Try watching some how to's on you tube. I'll bet you can do it. Some of the tiles are small or smaller and joined together with a netting that you can cut to size. Go on, Joanne YOU CAN DO IT!

I've even done a marble tile floor, first try...and it looks PRO! It's just not that hard to do real tile. Like others said, they have free classes at Home Depot....or videos online....it's really easy!

AS they tell us on the decorating shows, when you have just a little area to decorate with tile such as a small powder room or the area you describe, don't be afraid to use more expensive tiles since you won't need that many. Or the trim across the top of the tile could be the expensive stuff with a plain basic tile that is economical.

Years ago, kitchen remodelers used Z-brick. Its a thin tile and fired like brick. A glaze finish was available. It was applied like shower stall tiles. However, the seams have to be grouted and leak free to resist splash. Because of this, a one piece unit immediately above the sink may be best. Be sure to use mold and mildew resistant materials. Some items may have a fungicide incorporated into the material. This is critical because in a short time. mildew will attack tiny scratches and cracks and once established, is difficult to clean away.

Joann, I used the same product that ravencajun talked about, that looks like antique tin type ceilings. I used one in an antique copper and the results were stunning! Unfortunately, I installed it in the house that I bought just a few months before meeting Gary, so since we married, that house is 450 miles away, with renters in it, and I am totally unable to enjoy that beautiful backsplash!

The product was easy to use and quick to install. You cut it to the size you need with a good pair of household scissors. I would recommend that you cut a paper template for each 'odd' shaped piece and make sure it fits, then use that to mark where to cut each piece of the backsplash material.

and if you visit your local costco, they have a combo of glass and tile (all on a mesh) that's awesome... read/ watch videos on diy network...

There is no costco close to me. That tin is pretty but way to expensive for my kitchen and I only have a little to do so it wouldn't look right for my use.
Thanks, I'll keep on thinking. I would like tile if I could do it myself.
