Remodeling Design Dilemma Kitchens

Backsplash or no backsplash?

I'm new to this forum and would appreciate any guidance or suggestions. I am working on a kitchen remodel and designed

my vision using Home By Me (just a rough draft and cabinet choices are placeholders). I'm taking down a non-load bearing wall, creating an opening in a load bearing wall, adding an island and relocating a small bank of cabinets. My question is what to do in terms of a backsplash for these now isolated cabinets (moved to the back corner). For the other cabinet areas, we were going to go with a white subway tile backsplash. We will probably not do any real food prep on the isolated cabinets as it will probably be more of a coffee bar area. Just not sure if we should continue the backsplash for this area. Thanks for any advice.

Since the isolated cabinets are in an eating area and away from the kitchen, I say it would look better NOT to have a tile backsplash for them. But, if it will be a coffee bar area, there likely will be dark splashes in the future. Maybe a scrubbable semi-gloss paint for that wall?

Thanks Geekette! that was a picture I was looking for! Just wanted to get the idea. We have a very traditional house (1920's farmhouse, with wainscotting in the bathroom) and I didn't want a look that would be too contemporary. I think the cove would be okay, right? Thanks Tom999 and flyleft--its good to hear something positive about the Corian. Makes me feel more confident in our decision. Now I just have to price it!!

Macy, Live_wire_oak, I searched ebay and the big mosaic sellers and even emailed them pictures. I didn't have any luck so far. Also local tile stores, no luck. They all told me if you come up with a design, we can have an artist copy it onto tile or mosaic. I am not a good enough artist to make a design. If I don't find either of these, my default plan is to use a monochromatic raised fruit bowl that I did find in biscuit color and whitish color, probably with the same color field tile and black marble frame. Would biscuit or whitish backsplash go best with neutral white cabinets and black stone countertops?

didn't have time to read all the answers. I have no backsplash and have never regretted it...been over 6 yrs. It is painted with BM matte...which has ceramic in it. It is as beautiful now as it was when first painted. I love the fact that I can showcase other things ...art etc in my kitchen and no competition. Also if I ever want to change it is as quick as a paint brush...expense is minimal..paint only ! All in all I think it is serene as you point out . Here is one pick. Since I have a lot of high heat cooking in my kitchen..built in deep fat fryer as well as gas cook top I can definitely speak to the longevity of paint only. c ( more at this album )

I had a situation like yours. In the case where the uppers extended slightly further than did the counter top, the tile installer made the tile even with the edge of the upper cabinet and added a very narrow line (maybe 1/2", slightly rounded edge) of tile all the way to the floor on the outside of the lowers. I thought it looked great. Sorry, I have no photos. In the case where the counters were wider than uppers, he lined up the tile with the edge of the uppers and the tile went straight down to the counters, so the last 1/2", or so, had no tile above it. Because of the shape of the edge, this looked intentional.

Also, kind of off topic but you should consider having drawers in the instead of all cabinets. drawers are so much better.

The cabinets shown are just place holders to get an idea. Would absolutely have drawers. Thanks.
