I use AVG... had norton, but had all sorts of issues with it... so dumped it for AVG.. no problems now.... (knock on wood )

Of several, I too picked free Avast for my new computer.

I personally prefer Avast free and definitely with your issue I would install, update and run full malwarebytes free scan. Many malware infections can cause high cpu and memory use. I recommend downloads from major geeks. They are trustworthy. I linked to the download for malwarebytes, just use the search box on the top of the site to find Avast or whatever you want. As always watch carefully step by step instructions and unselect items like toolbars and added junk. And make sure you pay attention and select free not trial versions.

I wanted to mention at majorgeeks use the download links at the top where it says download locations I usually go with the one at majorgeeks.
Don't go down the page to the great big green download now button that is for something totally different and you don't want that.

I'll second what Raven says about being careful which download button to use and also to watch boxes to check or uncheck or you can wind up with stuff you don't want!

ruthie, your question is not unlike asking "Who makes the best washing machine", or "What's the best vacuum to buy", etc. Meaning, what you'll hear most often is that people will recommend what they've chosen for themself. Because unless their choice turned out to be a mistake, no one ever admits to making a poor choice.

So in that vein, I've used Norton for a long time (perhaps not quite 10 years) and I think it's great. The Norton security system is effective, unobtrusive and comprehensive. I've had no problems with it or with any infection of any kind - but another factor is that I try to be a careful and thoughtful internet user.

If you're have any performance or running issue with Norton, try their free tech support. I've used them a few times (I remember once was because of a file corruption matter that can happen with any software) and they were great. They do support by remote connection and you just sit back and watch them work.

I've been using Norton for the past 3 years and it has served well. Before that, I had been using McAfee until it began to slow down the computer with each upgrade and I could not find a fix.

According to my information, the creator of McAfee fled to South America to avoid arrest in the US. Don't trust my memory on this but search for yourself to see what the situation is. For all I know, that issue could have been resolved.

Norton takes up your whole computer in my opinion. They also had a lawsuit against them and I was eventually granted $10. I think they have had several lawsuits, but not sure. The suit was for bumping up your auto renewal each time by several months.

We have been using Norton for the length of time that we have had computers and during my husbands career...As I mentioned he was an IT execttive...an executive VP in that dept.a MIS Director....He is a Norton man...and always will be...It will be like pulling eye teeth to get him to take Norton off my machine...Snidely just google Norton issues if you don't believe what I am saying...

I agree with your husband, Norton is a good choice that has been consistently reliable and trouble free for me. If yours doesn't meet that description, calling tech support is a quick fix. Or, try something else as you choose.

Snidley...all I asked was what anti virus program people here used...not what is the worlds best..what is the worst..what someone recommends..what someone hates..what someone would never use...what some one would wish one their worse enemy...just read the first sentence in my post...

Could you advise me what virus protection program you use..... For some reason it all ways seems that you just are trying to find some issue with me...If you google norton...you will see that many people are having the same exact "issue" that I am..so even though my husband is and or was an IT exec...he has never encountered a situation where Norton took over his machine...or perhaps his people just took care of the problem and he was never made aware of it...but his wife is beeching about it...

I'm sorry you reacted to my comments rather than perhaps reading them. I tried to be clear in suggesting that your current installation seems to be behaving in abnormal ways (perhaps because of a corrupted file) and that a call to tech support would fix that, as I described it did once very easily for me in.

My last sentence says do what you want, and the link gives you those options.
