Royal Family on Balcony

Did anyone else think it was strange that when the Queen was waving to the crowd from Buckingham Palace that only Prince Charles and his family joined her. Where were her other children and their families.

The rest of the family has been seen several times throughout the celebration. Not sure why they aren't there. Maybe it is because William and Charles are in direct line to the throne and it is more important that they be seen. That balcony doesn't really appear to be very large.

I think Prince Andrew was with his father at the hospital.

Westerland or Royal Sunset?

If Royal Sunset survives for you in zone 6b, then I'd agree that it's the prettier of those two roses. For me in zone 5, Royal Sunset has failed to overwinter 3 times, but Westerland is fine. Even more hardy is its counterpart Autumn Sunset, but it's more on the yellow side of the color range. In my summer heat, Ginger Syllabub fades to a creamy beige most of the time, but it is reliably hardy in my zone 4 pocket. Polka is another lovely apricot climber, but I find it fades pretty quickly too and the canes are very stiff. Cynthia

Thanks to both of you! I am glad it is collectible (i.e. priced right) for me because I love this piece and was not sure how to find it. When I was looking at other Royal Copenhagen pieces, they did not look anything like this, so I appreciate the search terms.

Two beautiful royal families

Those children are adorable, what beautiful faces! Thanks for posting - it brought back memories of my Dad who was stationed in Belgium and the Netherlands for a part of WWII. Before he died he gave me a beautiful wooden box that was made for him by a grateful citizen of Belguim. He saved that box for over 60 years and it meant a great deal to him. Despite the fact that it was wartime he thought the people of that area and Britain were the warmest to the GI's. He did not like being stationed in France. Maire

I think the other royals were not included in the ride back to the palace or on the balcony simply because the celebration celebrated not only the longevity of the present monarch, but also the monarchy - and so displayed her successors, Charles and William.

They just reported the celebration is costing well over 2 million dollars. Kinda crazy to me..

OT Back in 1984 I went to England (alone) for 5 weeks and saw the Queen Trooping the colors (Inspecting the troops on horseback) waited with the crowd while the royal family went to the palace in their carriages. including Princess Di and Charles. Then raced with the crowd to the palace to see the royal family come out on the balcony. Quite an experience for that bit of time I felt she was my queen. I applaud the people for celebrating this way and continuing in their ancient celebrationis. I hope it is just a temp hosp stay for Prince Phillip.

The celebration may cost over $2M, but it is probably generating more than that in revenue.

Are you sure they didn't say 2 billion (with a "b").

The ones that joined her on the balcony are classed as 'Senior Royals' The rest of the family have been with the Queen for the rest of the celebrations!

It's not the least bit strange.

Once Charles had children (William and Harry), Elizabeth's other children were out of the royal succession. Harry was still there because he's Charles' son, and third in succession to the throne. If and when William has children, they will supplant Harry and any of his future offspring.

So, yes, only the senior royals were present. Protocol and etiquette dictate the attendees, not the desires of family.

Queen Elizabeth specified she only wanted the direct descendants to the throne to be on the balcony with her. Charles and Camilla, William and Kate and Harry. Prince Phillip would have been there as well.

It's a celebration, yes, but this also 'sells' GB to tourists.

What a crowd!

This little queen just keeps on keeping on, doesn't she? She's done everything expected of her, including providing heirs! (Just how tall ARE Charles, William and Harry?)

I admire the fact that the British people love her so much and I admire that she has been above any kind of disgusting behavior like we see in so many...She has been a model for her place in history.

I believe that Prince Charles is around 5'10" and both of the boys are over 6 feet tall.

I've just wasted ten minutes reading a lengthy 'discussion' between Brits about whether Prince William is really 6' 3" or more likely 6' 2" -- and whether his bride is not the 5' 10" reported, but more likely 5' 8".

There was also a photo of Pres. Obama and the first lady posing with the queen and her prince. The Obamas look gigantic (and are of course much younger).

Darn that Google anyways! (As if I didn't waste enough time on forums.)

what i thought was touching, was the genuine look on qe2's face when her ds charles read his "thank you" to his mother for being queen...it was the closest to real emotion, she's allowed herself...

I enjoyed watching the festivities, I have always been a fan of the British. I was disappointed in the final concert, but that is just my personal opinion, not my kind of music.

I thought the queen looked very tired and concerned, I'm sure, for her prince. So sad that he was unable to be with her. She is a very strong woman and has been a credit to the English people.

I always get a lump in my throat when they play "God Save the Queen".
