Westerland or Royal Sunset?

There are two climbers I've been wondering about that are in the apricot or apricot-orange family. One is Westerland and the other is Royal Sunset. I'm thinking that Westerland is probably the better of the two, but I kind of like the color of Royal Sunset a little better. Or any other suggestions in this color range would be good.

'Royal Sunse't is a far more beautiful rose, IMHO, than 'Westerland', but it is notorious for needing a hot climate. Zone 6 ought to be possible, but it might not be at its best where you are.

What about 'Ginger Syllabub' from Harkness? I have given up on Harkness roses where I am, but the climate of much of England is comparable to our zone 6.

Nastarana - Thanks, the rose you mentioned is beautiful. I mistakenly put zone 6, but I am in zone 6b. I'm sure my zone would have plenty of heat for Royal Sunset. I appreciate the info. I was browsing through one of my old rose books and came across Royal Sunset and thought it was beautiful. I have been considering Westerland for awhile, so was wondering which one or possibly another would be a better choice for me.

New Dawn is pretty foolproof - even I can do it! Seriously, they're my first "real" (ie not Knockout) roses, and they did GREAT in their first year last year. I planted them the previous autumn. I'm really excited to see how they'll do this year now they're well-established (and just hoping the supercold winter we had hasn't affected them!). They get some blackspot, but seem to laugh it off and keep right on growing and blooming....

dmny- thanks for the white recommendation. Iceberg sounds like a good choice. I'd really like to find something that repeats well. I ordered Sombreuil without researching the thorns and was shocked when I pulled it out of the shipping box! The prickles are huge, so probably not the best choice for next to the front door! Something about those jagged edges doesn't say "Welcome." Anyway, I found a place for Sombreuil in my side yard near the back deck where hopefully I can enjoy the fragrance but my kids won't get hurt on it. meredith_e, nice to hear from someone in my exact zone in addition to the other voices! I love the orangey- apricot tones, too, more than the yellows, in Westerland and Royal Sunset. Nice to hear it keeps those darker tones in the shade! I found a band of Royal Sunset at Burlington Roses if I can be patient enough for it to grow. Since the spot I'm looking to fill is on the front of my house, I'm anxious for it to get big. After doing more research, I came across Renae and Annie Laurie McDowell, which really piqued my interest, too! These roses sound like they might do nicely in this part shade spot and provide plenty of blooms. I was originally going for an apricot color, but I'd be willing to go pinkish. Maybe I should get them all...

Holly I think I got lucky with the 3 icebergs. I had driven down to the large rose supplier to pick up the main roses for my new bed (5 of them) and since I had to use the freeway interchange right by Lowe's, I decided to stop for a pair of Russian Sages since I could not find them locally and they were listed in their ad. There sitting with the roses were a few 1g pots with 3 small icebergs started in them. All were listed as Iceberg-Brilliant Pink-Burgundy. I left the elastic tags on the plants just so I could figure them out later. I think the darkest is a bit close to hot pink, but with so much white they really are Brilliant Pink. I prefer the paler pink but if you are doing a bright colored bed, I think either would be fine. Like many, I have a love hate relationship with Icebergs. I hate that they do so well and are so common-loving the unusual and uncommon. But I LOVE that they do so well, bloom so well, grow so fast, seem to not care where they are planted. The two 1g's I bought last season are just as happy as the rest of the bed, even though they started smaller and do not get the care that the rest of the bed gets (less water-more heat)

I have both. There are only slight differences between mine. Westerland seems to be more vigorous in that it throws bigger canes and wants to take over more real estate. However, there is no difference in the vigor of blooms--both flower repeatedly in huge clusters. Autumn Sunset's colors are yellow with tinge of peach. Westerland is more orange and bright. Westerland is more attention-getting and Autumn Sunset blends in with other roses' colors better. So I guess it depends on where your rose is going to be located. If you have a lot of room 10' x 10' and want a rich bright color, then pick Westerland. If you don't have as much room and you need a softer color next to other roses, then choose Autumn Sunset. I think they both have a good fragrance.

I grow both in the Great Lakes area. Royal Sunset is indeed the more beautiful and, surprisingly, hardier. I lose Westerland to the ground each winter, but it comes back to a height of 7' each summer. I only lost Royal Sunset to the ground this past winter for the first time in 10 years. It has had canes in the 10-12' range, They both smell good, but the winner is RS.

If Royal Sunset survives for you in zone 6b, then I'd agree that it's the prettier of those two roses. For me in zone 5, Royal Sunset has failed to overwinter 3 times, but Westerland is fine. Even more hardy is its counterpart Autumn Sunset, but it's more on the yellow side of the color range. In my summer heat, Ginger Syllabub fades to a creamy beige most of the time, but it is reliably hardy in my zone 4 pocket. Polka is another lovely apricot climber, but I find it fades pretty quickly too and the canes are very stiff.

Royal Sunset is a very beautiful climber but it is an old one and has some of the older climbers problems. It is, as said, hardy but unless pruned, it will grow in all directions. The flowers will then not be as full and the leaves sparse. To get the best out of this beauty, it needs to be pruned hard every year to make it grow as a large shrub shape which is normal for it. Keep the nitrogen low so it will put it's strength into flowers not long growth. Then this is what you will see.
