Busy Weekend in Windsor

There is so much going on in the City of Windsor this weekend.

Right now I am hearing the Red Bull Air Race planes doing their practice runs over my house. Kind of neat to watch them do their loops and I love the buzzing sound they make. The race is set over the Detroit River in the downtown area but I am East of downtown near the river where pilots are making their turn arounds. Race starts tomorrow and again on Sunday.

Windsor is trying to put on its best face despite an 8 week outside workers strike which includes garbage pickup and landscape workers. Windsor is none to pristine right now and our once many beautiful gardens have now turned into fields of weeds. Tempers are flaring between picketers and the public who want to clean up the gardens and take their own trash away to private dump sites.

We also have the Carousel of Nations by the River. Windsor's ethnic communities showcase their food, traditions and entertainment. I love the dancers and of course the food. Next weekend Villages open up around the City. I will make my annual stop at the Greek Village to get my flaming cheese. Sooo good.

Celtic Festival is at Windsor Armories. Anywhere the Scots and English gather in Windsor there is sure to be lots of beer, Guinness, and music.

Corvette Show in nearby LaSalle. They lost their spot in Dieppe Gardens to the Red Bull Air Race this year. I love looking at the older Corvettes.

Can't forget Father's Day on Sunday. Ever since my Dad died in 1984 my childhood friend's Dad became my "adopted" Dad so I was always invited to their Father's Day celebrations. Mr. Moore passed away 2 years ago and Kathy and her Mom still celebrate the day to honour his memory and of course my own Dad's. We drive to Leamington to a nice restaurant near Point Pelee National Park and have a perch dinner. This tiny restaurant has the best coleslaw I have ever eaten and the perch is delicious. We are always too full to have dessert which Mr. Moore would never pass up. LOL

I am having company this weekend-LOL if I can call my sister company so I won't be partaking of the wonderful activities Windsor has to offer. I can see the Red Bull planes from my backyard and go to the Carousel Villages next weekend. I informed her I was going out on Father's Day as plans were already made so she can continue to stay here or go home. I am having Marjorie here to get her mind off her impending surgery June 24. She has had a lot of ups and downs since her cancer diagnosis and some of it wasn't good news. This is the first time I have seen her not so confident about any medical condition or treatment she has had and she really believes this time she won't make it. That concerns me because she has been through a lot medically all her life and never has she felt like this.

Sounds like a great weekend with lots of fun things. We are not that far from there,but weekend already booked up. Sorry about your sister, I am going thru that with DH/cancer and other health issues, but so far his attitude is upbeat. One day at a time.
Sounds like some of the workers need a mommy talking to. As with any issues, there are several sides to a story, but most "adults" do put issues on a back burner so the city and the people don't suffer.

Anne, does Windsor still do Art-In-The-Park? I remember that from when I lived there almost 30 years ago.

Yeah Angie it really depends on the aggressiveness of the birds. Last year the blues and TRES would fight here and there. The blues would land on the TRES's box and they would come after them but the blues refused to budge. Even after multiple dives the blues just wouldn't budge! They used it as a perch mainly. But when the swallows landed on the blues box....look out! I recall the Male and Female each pinning the swallows to the ground a time or two. The male would frequently chaise them if they got anywhere close. This year they perch on each other's boxes but usually split up when together. If the swarm of the swallows comes in the blues leave. But the swallow pair next to the blues perches on their box and if they see another swallow land on the blues box they chaise them down and flutter. Same with the blues! Another Male bluebird (His call sounded like a fledgling from last year, maybe it is? Can anyone answer this) showed up today and the primary male chaised the other male high in the sky and ran it off. These two species are so alike aren't they?! But why is there a swarm of swallows at my boxes and only 3 bluebirds? They face the exact same problems but yet the poor bluebirds are always out-numbered! Mr. Blue was perching on, entering, and singing on the box. He'd then perch nearby and when the female landed on the box he was wing waving like crazy! But she landed on the front and landed on the top frequently. I hope they start building soon! Just not laying! Worried about cooler temps. 47 tomorrow and then 50's and 60's the rest of the week.

to kswl, I have been at this forum many yrs. yes. and live in FL. 34 yrs. and to: Marti8 there is no real headboard, it was simply made at first with leftover border paper and the frame around it directly on the wall, now the lattice is on top of the paper directly on the wall. I had 8 pillows on my bed, but they hid the lattice so I removed a few. Thanks for the nice comments.

Busy, but not hard work. My nephew is bringing my Mom part way to meet us for early easter lunch tomorrow. I have Easter baskets for them, will try to make it fun for her. Restaurant. He can't bring her Sunday (he's working) and my brother and his wife are out of town. We're making the 6-hr round trip in two weeks, hotel reservation, are hosting her 90th birthday party at her retirement center for her then so decided to keep it a little light this weekend. And there is mothers day two weeks after her birthday ;0) I have three Costco half hams in my refrigerator just purchased, and instead we're having oysters on Easter. A friend was coming from the peninsula this afternoon and picked up Hama Hama yearlings for me, always so good. It's forecast to be a nice day, maybe I can get some outside work done Easter afternoon. Our Spring has been so wet, I'm behind.... Idstarr, congratulations on the blood count!

Love seeing seedlings selection! I know I can not cull anything... Those second year seedlings, some of them look like fast growers? Like yellows color in the middle left,my eye taken immediately to it. How large Smiling Susan gets? It has all my favorite traits, yellow, cupped, corrugated...

Marie, you live near Windsor? I didn't know that.

Windsor's Art in the Park was last weekend. Despite the strike citizens of Windsor cleaned up the park and mowed the grass for the event. The grass was booby trapped with pieces of chain link fencing so if anyone tried to cut the grass it would wreck their mowers. I didn't go this year and usually go every other year because it seems to always be the same people showing their wares. Where in Windsor did you live. Did you go to school here? I've lived in Windsor for most of my life.

The Red Bull planes flying over the house are so cool. They are spinning and doing all kinds of neat tricks.

isn't aweful, you live just across the river and hadn't heard about yout strike, or any of the other fun events..(other than the red bull races) why we can't share some of the news is beyond me...

Susan, watch Channel 9 - CBC at Six and get the Windsor news. I always watch Chuck for my weather on Channel 4 or should I say 4.1 now. I watch CBC until 6:30 then I switch to a Detroit News Station.

Lots of Red Wing Fans in Windsor and you are right I am not one of them nor am I a Toronto fan. I have always favoured Chicago or Boston ever since I was a kid. I am not watching the game right now but I can tell what the score is just by the hooting and hollering going on across the street at my neighbour Dan's house. They are on the front porch watching the game with friends. LOL

If the Red Wings win Windsorites will celebrate together with Detroit.

When I lived there, I was living out in Forest Glade on Forest Glade Court (I just had to Google Map it to find out). As I said, about 30 years ago, GAH! That was a brand new development at the time. I worked on Ouellette Avenue, and my husband was working in the military recruiting office on Windsor Avenue I think.

Sorry, I got lost. I was thinking you were near Regina which is about 3-4 hours from me. I am just south of Weymour or Brandon. Had to look on the map, guess you are north of Detroit, which is a bit farther. We are also about a day's drive south of Winnipeg. Am I right--or am I lost again.

I was surprised to hear that you were near Windsor ... as I thought that you live in North Dakota ... which, last I heard, was quite a long way from southern Ontario. Maybe the tectonic plates that lie under the continents have been moving again!

Actually, Windsor is south of Detroit (well, south-east), that surprises many, but the Detroit River runs south-west in that area, between Lake St. Clair and Lake Erie. If you have a Road Atlas, check the south-western end of Ontario or the Michigan map, especially Michigan cities.

Did you get the same snow that southern Alberta and Saskatchewan did a few days ago? Said to result from weather disturbances in Montana and Wyoming.

Jane, I live in the old Riverside area. I remember when Forest Glade was new, anytime I went into that subdivision I got lost. LOL We probably shopped at some of the same stores. I worked on Ouellette Avenue for many years too and also worked out of an office at the old Holiday Inn right next to the Odeon Theatre. I miss downtown the way it used to be. I seldom go down there anymore except to get my hair done on Pelissier St. No place to shop anymore.

I worked for an insurance firm on Ouellette. Do not really have too many memories of shopping there, perhaps I was too busy at work LOL. I do remember a cafe in a courtyard just off Ouellette, had a fabulous sandwich on the menu.

My best memories of Windsor are friends I made, Art in the Park, and the fireworks for Canada Day/Fourth of July. It is such a long time ago now, I must be getting on!
