Very nice! What are the KA changes you like? I have a 1984 Cuisinart so I have to be ready to act in an emergency! I've been reading old Gourmets and it's a hoot to see my processor among the ads with all those scary '80's hairstyles.

" ... face plants in the muck ..." ... are those "face plants" something like water lilies, Rosie? Or a wild rose-bud? (wild rose being the official plant of Alberta, for you other folks). Referring to hauling newborn calves. When I was a kid we did most of the hauling on our rather large (in those days) farm with a trailer behind the car. The farm was a mile and a quarter long and when one of the heifers had had her first calf in a pasture field just this side of the woods at the back Dad took the car and trailer back there to load the calf into the trailer to bring to the barn. As he began to drive slowly away from the calving place, the mother followed for a short distance ... then returned to the place where the calf had been born. I don't remember whether Dad made a circle a couple of times to try to get her to follow, but she didn't. I was nine, and Dad asked whether I thought that I could drive the car to the barn while he pushed the calf ... and I, of course, said that I could. There were a couple of gates to open and close, which I accomplished without difficulty, and we had a gravel pit about half way to the barn, which gave me no trouble as I drove slowly and carefully down into it .. but as I was moving up the slope to go out ... the car stalled, and I had no success in trying start it again, on the upslope ... so had to wait until Dad came along, pushing the calf, with the heifer following, to get me out of my pickle. My introduction to driving ... and as a farm kid, in World War II, I got my driving licence at age 15. Still got it, 70 years later ... and soon need to have my driving consultation and tests for rules of the road, driving signs, and a vision test ... with a few participants being asked to take a driving test, as well ... my fourth, as we have to have one at age 80 and every two years thereafter. Thirty-five bucks a shot, good for two years ... but it may go up, as the province is darn near broke, and having kept the annual fee for auto licence at the same level for a number of years, they increased it from $74.00 to $98.00 this year. Once I asked the consultant/tester whether we got a gold star if we got them all right ... and she said that she'd been thinking of getting a smiley face with a car on it to give out. Dad wondered whether, should one of the tires blow, he could get permission from the local ration board to get a replacement for the car ... so he talked to old Uncle Charlie, housebound for years, whose farm Dad sharecropped and who hadn't driven for some years and whom Dad shaved about once a week, whether he could use his '26 Hudson, with a square back, to make a truck, and Uncle said to go ahead. So Dad cut the square back off and welded it back to the frame just behind the front seats, leaving a space of bare frame behind it, over the back wheels, then built a square, flat wooden platform on it ... one had to tie the loads down or drive *very* carefully ... or suffer a loss of load. The tires, having sat unused for years, weren't useful ... so Dad got four tires for that home-made truck! A toggle switch on the dash that one pulled to the left to turn on the ignition, and one beside it that one pushed to the right to turn on the lights - and one had to push a lever on the floor to operate the starter. What memories a simple little story brings back to our minds! ole joyfuelled

The Philadelphia Inquirer's garden section said it was time to "bring all house plants indoors," which I've already done (except for a tall jade bonsai that doesn't fit under any lights, am still trying to find a place for it). Here are some pix of my indoor setup for about 50 assorted adenium plants & seedlings. Main grow center is a two-tiered T-12 grow stand in my utility room, plus a repurposed Ikea kitchen cart fitted out w/a tabletop T-5 unit on the top shelf with a strip fluorescent fixture tacked to the underside for the rest of the bunch:aloes, jades, spider plants & a few cacti. I am rapidly running out of room, so next year will have to figure out a better & larger configuration, maybe commandeer part of our family room for the green family members. I also got some new toys - LED lamps - a mini gooseneck 7 W lamp and a 25 W light bulb and clip-on socket that I hope to use on fresh sowings in the spring. Am still getting used to the weird red and blue lights - it looks like the Twilight Zone in our library.

I couldn't work out without my music. Did 5.5 miles tonight choosing to go through my songs by album, which I've never done before. I skipped over anything too slow.

Good for you!

An iPod came with my computer and I didn't think I'd use it. Wrong! I have put most of my CDs on it, plus some downloads. It's a great toy.

I don't own one. DS has a sony walkman brand MP3 player. Likes it way better than the IPOD. It can hold close to 100000 songs, can play video if he wants it to, is WAY SMALLER and easier to use when working out, likes the FM tuner and it was a lot LESS Expensive than the ipod.

Yay! I have just a cheap MP3 player but I adore mine. I used to carry a walkman, remember those? Then I got a portable cd player and now this little thing. What I love is how it just tucks into a pocket and off you go. Congrats on your new toy! Anything that gets us all up and moving is aces in my book.

Wes has one; a mega 64-something, it-does-everything model. He downloads a lot of pod-casts on hunting dogs, training hunting dogs, fishing, and hunting, etc. He's also taking "Speak German" iPod lessons. He has all our photos and music in it.

I got him a Bose docking station/speakers. It sounds awesome. He downloads the Prairie Home Companion pod cast each week and we listen to it in the den.

I want one of my own. I would put my every-growing collection of audio books in it. I'd get a small docking station so I could carry it around the house and out to the garden as I do chores and "stuff." I listen to the audio books this way now, but I have to carry the bigger CD player and keep changing the discs.

I don't like wearing ear buds.

I want an iPod, or an iPad.

I found that sometimes a podcast works great if you're just on the treadmill walking. It really makes the time fly! And there are so many to choose from over on iTunes (for free).

I don't like earbuds, either--they don't feel good and they don't stay in. I bought over-the-ear earpieces--little 'buds' still go in the eardrum, but they're much more comfortable. Try to find the ones that have just a slim wire piece that goes over the ear. Some of the others have a thicker plastic piece that's just too bulky.

I use the over-the-ear type of ear pieces as well. Their much more comfortable, and they never fall off. I also use my iPod in the car- I listen to podcasts and my favourite music while I'm driving.

The start of an addiction! Started with an MP3, then classic iPod, progressed to iTouch and am now at the iPad stage.
