A marvelous nest check, chicks, more nests & eggs

Because of our odd weather - unending rains, tornados, heat, cold, and weird - and trying to set out the last of the garden plants during the "dry" times, I haven't checked the Purple Martins' gourds since June 16.

Today, June 21, I was in for several big, and happy, surprises.

On June 16 I had seven nesting pairs with 30 eggs.

Today, I have 10 nesting pairs with a total of THREE CHICKS and 37 eggs!

Gourds 1, 3, and 14 all had new nests with 3, 2, and 1 eggs respectively.

Gourd 5 has the first three hatchlings of 2010 season. This gourds seems to have acquired a "mystery egg," too. During every nest check there have been only five eggs. On the June 16 check there were five eggs. Today there are three newly hatched chicks, and three eggs remaining.

The group has been very busy since the 16th. I knew there were some new birds hanging around, but I had no idea they were being so productive!

Introducing "Faith," "Hope," and "Charity"...the first hatchlings of my 2010 Purple Martin season.

My counts today are...

Gourd 1 - 3 eggs

Gourd 2 - Bachelor's Pad

Gourd 3 - 2 eggs

Gourd 4 - 5 eggs

Gourd 5 - 3 chicks and 3 eggs

Gourd 6 - 5 eggs

Gourd 7 - 4 eggs

Gourd 8 - 4 eggs

Gourd 9 - Bachelor's Pad

Gourd 11 - 5 eggs

Gourd 12 - 5 eggs

Gourd 14 - 1 egg

Gourd 15 - Bachelor's Pad
