My Heart is Breaking......MOM

I'm so torn up, and I hate to lay all my grief on you guys.

Mom's had another serious setback. I don't know how much the poor woman is able, or God-forbid, willing to take.

Instead of coming to our local Hospital as planned, she's back in the CCT. CCT there is the Critical Care Trauma Center (ICU).

What's great about that is that there are nurses one on one with the patients and they are just outside the bay. They don't leave, and are relieved when they go on breaks.

She has a ventilator-breathing tube in her throat. She has fluid in her lungs which is slowly getting better; her kidneys are draining the fluids but not all the toxins......there's talk about putting her on dialysis (temporary) but they're holding off as long as they can.

Her PH is acidic which apparently is not a good thing. Her lungs being inefficient and her diaphragm not working properly caused the acidity to rise.

5 of us went in to see her last Sunday (Father's Day), and she couldn't talk with the breathing tube in. She would mouth the words, but that doesn't always work for me to try to understand.

I got her a pad and pencil and even though she could hardly hold the pencil, she weakly printed BBQ. I was astounded that in her state, she thought of Father's Day and why we didn't have the barbecue. We all assured her that we wanted to cancel it, we wanted to see her, and we'd have it later this summer.

Anyway, lots going on....none of it good, by the sounds of it, and I'm afraid I need your help again. This poor woman has been going through so much and I just want her to come home.

Patricia, My Mother died the same exact way as yours. She had been suffering with a stiff neck for a couple of weeks. On Monday (June 4, 2007) she went to the hospital to get it checked. On Wednesday (6th) we found out she had liver cancer. It had spread to her adrenial glands, lungs and into her neck. On Sunday (10th) she was gone. She too went peacefully in her sleep. I know what you went through, she went really fast. Although this is all still new to me, I too feel your pain. Grieving is not easy for me right now. I smelt saukraut (sp?) the other day and thought it was kind of funny as I was driving down the road. I close my eyes and see her smiling face but yet I can not cry. Her services are this coming week end (17th/18th) and she is being buried on my son's (her grandson's) birthday. He is taking it so hard, but there is nothing I can do. I have talked till I was blue in the face and can not gt my brother to budge. I just hope I have the strength to go through this. With God's help we wil get through this. Just built a 2 story retirement home. The only rooms upstairs are a small MBR and small MBa. I like going upstairs to bed and I like perching up there on the windowseat to look out at the world. And I'm also of the use it or lose it school. But I had a friend who became disabled in his 30s while living in an old house with upstairs bedrooms and only a powder room on the first floor. They had to add a complicated lift to the tune of what I recall as 10K, but it was worth it not to move. Decided then we would never have a house that was not at least livable on one level. So we have a curbless shower downstairs in a larger bathroom, wide-ish halls and doors, and one barrier-free entry. A guest room on the first floor that we could use if we couldn't get upstairs. But actually, the location of the place, far from medical services of any complexity, is not suitable for anyone who is too feeble, anyway. So that was our compromise. It also means that our house is "visitable" on the first floor for people with different levels of mobility.

Did you use rooting hormones? I bought this hydroponic cloner because they are supposed to be amazing. I will post updates every two weeks. I know it takes awhile for the calleous to form then roots to grow. These will be inside till next May. I can only hope!

Oh dear, I know you are so sad and worried. Amazing that she would think of the BBQ when she is in such a state! You can tell family is important to her. She's lucky to have you by her side, and I know it lifted her spirits to see everyone on Fathers Day. Take care.

Oh, shoot. Did something specifically happen? The last I remember, they thought she had a slow-growing cancer in her abdomen, but otherwise she was coming along slowly. I'm soooo sorry to hear this, Sherry. You must be beyond frustrated and sad. I'll pray for you.

Sjerin, you're right. That was my last post; our meeting with the doctor.

When she got to the surgical floor room from the CCT, I spoke to her a few times over the course of the next day and 1/2. I told her she didn't sound so good. Her voice was rattly and she sounded weak.

It turns out that her kidneys weren't working properly, not draining the fluids and they settled into her lungs. She was rushed down to CCT **again** and immediately put on a ventilator. That was over a week ago.

They have her on diaretics to force the kidneys to work, but they aren't, yet. Dialysis is an option but they're delaying doing that to see if her kidneys kick in fully.

When she got back into CCT I told my step-father to cancel Father's day. He wanted to be with Mom and wouldn't enjoy it anyway. So Hubby and I, step-dad and step-brother and SIL all went to visit her last Sunday.

That is SO like her.....more worried about the BBQ (or lack thereof) instead of her. I laughed and at the same time had tears in my eyes when she wrote that.

She also wrote that if we're bored we don't need to stay. I told her we'd never be bored staying with her. It was good having us all in to see her. There was lots of conversation, some laughter and didn't feel alone, and could catch up on family stuff.

This is so unfair, Jasdip, that your poor Mom is going through all this, just when you were all hoping she was finally on the mend. She has my healing thoughts and prayers that this is a very small setback. Hugs to you all.

I'm so sorry you have to go through this. Just love her and spend as much time with her as you can. Tell her you are planning the BBQ for when she gets home from the hospital. It will give her hope.

I'm so sorry that your mom is having so many problems, Jasdip. I hope her meds and treatments kick in and that she'll be coming home soon. Be sure to take care of yourself, too, sweetie!

I'm so sorry her health has deteriorated. Is her team of doctors giving her options for further treatments?

I agree with the earlier advice that you spend time with her, providing loving support for her choices.
