How can I persuade DH to get a 2nd dog?

He is adamant that one is enough. And most of the time I agree. But sometimes I think Elvira, Dachshund, would love a playmate. And she would get more exercise and maybe not be so desolate when I have to leave to run errands. I saw this picture of a Dachshund at a local rescue group and fell in love. He is probably gone but might call anyway.

Find our WHY he doesn't want another dog. Is it the work to care for a pet, the picking up in the yard, the expense? That might help you present a good case for a second dog.

Is there any chance you could take Elvira to a dog park to play, or she could play with a neighbor's dog? That would be ideal because she could have "friends" with no extra trouble to you.

That is one cute pup! Did you show DH?

He is adorable! Two dogs are better than one dog because they keep each other company as long as they are fixed or you have one of each sex so that there are no alpha dog problems. A lot of places will let your dog visit so that you can see how the two get along first.

I have lived at my current home for 28 years. In that time, I have had the extreme pleasure of having 3 German Shorthaired Pointers, a west Highland White Terrier, and our current extended family - a toy and a standard Poodle as my friends and companions. All the dogs were loved to the Nth degree and never mistreated in any way. That said, one of the first commands these dogs were taught is "NO". They are made to understand that when their behavior is unacceptable, the "NO" command means STOP IMMEDIATELY and that if they do not stop, I am immediately ready to make them stop. Each of these dogs was trained as a puppy to stay OUT of the gardens. I'll probably get in trouble for saying this, but, if your dog(s) will not obey your command, the dog is training you to be subordinate in the pack. Your dog must know exactly who is boss and that it is not him/her. I can raise my hand as though I was going to hit my dogs, or pull back my foot as though I was going to kick them and they will not respond by flinching or cowering because they are never abused. While training the dogs I use a 4 ft piece of dowel rod as an aid. I do not strike the dogs, I only use it to tap the dogs for attention or to move their position. Often, I only tap the ground for attention. The dogs recognize the training aid as a symbol of dominance - even though I never strike them. When I pick it up, the dogs are immediately attentive. Tapping the stick on the ground or carpet has about the same effect as an alpha dog growling at a subordinate. Our dog's main fault is they think everyone is their friend come over to play. If you came to my home, they would want to nudge you to solicit pets. If I tell them no & they forget or ignore the command, I simply pick up the stick without saying anything. The dogs immediately are reminded they are subordinate and give up their aberrant behavior. This is not cruel, nor does it cause your dog to shun or hate you. Our dogs are extremely loving, seeking our constant companionship, and have no fear of being "punished". A stern word puts them in a submissive posture and anxious to please, unlike many other dogs I've seen that are obviously afraid of being struck. I think the tree is beautiful! Also, red & purple look smashing together... DH once gave me a Snow Fountain Cherry for Mother's Day that I'd not chosen. I had a little bronze plaque made & set it in the soil under the tree to memoralize his gift. I planted scilla 'Spring Beauty' & daff 'Tete-a-tete' underneath the tree with a top layer of vinca 'Illumination'. In five years, it was the prettiest spot in our garden come the end of April. And, that tree made it "our" garden rather than just mine. Now, for the past fifteen years we've shared a common passion in our garden. It's fun to have DH as my gardening buddy. So, please keep an open mind about your gift. It sounds like you've already got a great attitude. Don't forget to tell hubby frequently how much you love the tree! It's hard for men to choose gifts for us...they put their fear of rejection on the line for us. You did good with that hug! My box from Melissa arrived today! Inside was a very nice basket full of great stuff! Lots of chocolate goodies, which the kids immediately tried to talk me out of ... don't think so, LOL! Lilac and lavender scented candle Sharpie marker (thank you, thank you, my old one was just about dried up, and I use them for labeling my wintersown containers) Cute little notepad that says "If you pray for rain, be prepared to deal with some mud." (Love it!) Green metal turtle windchimes (very cute) Pair of heavy duty leather palm gloves (Boy did I need some of these! My husband's work gloves are way too big, and regular canvas or cloth garden gloves just aren't tough enough for some jobs.) In addition to all of these goodies, there were tons of seeds in the basket too: Greencrop bush beans Henderson bush lima beans Early Sunglow corn Parade cucumber (can't believe you found one I didn't already have) Poona Kheera cucumber (grew it for the first time last year. They were very large, and crisp, almost melon-like, and a very good producer.) Sakata's Sweet melon (Can't wait to try this one!) Orangeglo watermelon (on my wishlist) Louisiana Green Velvet okra (our nights might be too cool, but I'm going to try it anyway - I miss fried okra!) Burgess Buttercup squash Cocozelle squash (I almost sent this one to you too, LOL) Mini Bell Yellow pepper (Would you believe I grew a Mini-Belle Mix last year, and only got red and chocolate, no yellow, so thank you!) OK... first time all day that someone is not screaming or crying in my house. Crazy day today. Lavender- I wish I could see more pics of that kitchen. It's great. It even has the same cabinet style/color, island color, and flooring that we are planning to have in our kitchen. The 1 car garage is 15'10" wide. Is that big enough to steal space from it? I'm pretty sure we are limited by the property line restriction on the sides of the house. Our lot is 110' wide and 235' deep with untouchable natural green space in the back 1/3 of it. (100'x235' treed natural green space on the west side that is owned by the development.) Bump outs are a bit tricky because of our lot limitations. We hesitated to bump the kitchen out too much because it will limit our backyard patio and landscaping space. A lot of the odd bumps in the floorplan is because during the design process we did a 1' bump out of the kitchen, and several feet to the music room. Both rooms used to be even with the rest of the house. Lyfia- we put the master in that location of the house because of the view. :) Plus, I've never liked the idea of the master bedroom or bath being on the front of the house. Peytonroad- Thanks! Someone else pointed out the wasted space in the mudroom/powder room area. I'll have to keep thinking about that one. You all have given such great ideas and things to think about! I'm not sure if I mentioned this on this thread, but we've hired an independent architect to oversee the build. I'm meeting with her soon so that we can go over any of my concerns. This thread has been wonderful to collect ideas and issues to bring to her. Would love to hear any other ideas if you think of more. You all have been wonderful! Thanks so much!

I do ALL the care for Elvira, picking up, feeding, vet visits and exercise, so no inconvience to him. As he has been reminding me for 5 years, she is YOUR dog. We use to have 2 dogs a long time ago. I don't know why he is against it and I have even asked. I don't think he knows either.

Maybe it is because it is twice the expense and twice the heartache when they die? To me, 2 is no more work then 1. And the heck with the expense. And if you are going to have pets, you are going to have your heart broken someday. There is no getting around that whether it is one or two.

Two are much better than one. My Sammie would have never been able to be a only dog. He loves playing with the other dogs.

I have three because the oldest one was not active enough for Sammie, so I got Pawle Pug for him to play with.

It's easier to get forgiveness than permission.

I'm kidding, I don't even have the guts to pull that for one dog, much less a second. LOL. I stopped going to Petsmart on Saturdays b/c I am too tempted.

We have five dogs so my philosophy is "what's one more?" lol The last dog we got is a mini chihuahua and I got her for DH for Father's Day. I just said "Honey don't you want a mini chihuahua for Father's Day?". He loves her to death and she has just brought so much joy to our family. And she really perked up the other two indoor chi's that we have.

You'd be doing a super wonderful thing to give him a home! Would that be enough to convince him that you might save that dogs life?

My DH didn't want 2 dogs either. DS moved home over winter, bought the Chihuahua Mac, moved out and couldn't take him. He is our inherited boy. I love the little fart now, but there are times when I wish we still just had our baby Miss (doxie)We don't go places very often but DH will NOT travel with them and Mac I am not sure I'd trust in someone elses house. Its a pain to find someone to watch them. Miss I'd take with me in a New York minute and she'd love it once we got there but gets car sick.
The only other problem to me is the expense of one more.

When you find out, let me know. I wanted so badly to adopt one last week. The humane society here has decided to keep her as their mascot. I really wanted her. I thought she'd be great for Jaggs.
Check out the ears on this girl! Her name is Diana. She is a Corgi and Lab mix.

I adopted one dog, inherited another. Then I surprised Main Man with Pawle Pug. It was love at first sight. One big happy family.
