Is there any help for bunion pain?

Hi all!

I have bunions on both feet...left one makes walking REAL HARD!

I used to use those gel separaters and they no longer hold my big toe in position.

No insurance and not crazy about foot surgery YET, anyway...

Anyone here know of something that works where you can still have your shoes on?

Do you mean that big callous on the ball of your foot. My husband cut on his, but I don't recommend that. I insisted he buy a good pair of shoes. That worked until he wore the soles down then he had them resoled. So what helped him was well padded soles. The doctor told him never have surgery to remove them, because the scar tissue would be worse than the bunions.

I have a huge bunion on my right foot, none on the left, so far anyway. I have scheduled the surgery at least twice and then chickened out.....the recovery period sounds like it would last forever and you are unable to drive for quite a while. I find some relief from wearing bunion pads (get them at Walmart), sort of a felt pad type thing with sticky on the bottom. My best bet, tho, is to live in flip flops and since I live in a warm climate I can get away with it (I'm way over the age when I worry about what others may think of my ugly foot!)and when it gets chilly I wear Uggs. A tough thing for someone who used to have a shoe fetish! When I do buy closed toed shoes I buy the wide width, of course, and you can have them stretched. One of these days I'll get the guts for the surgery.......

Sound like a long and painful thing to consider but how does that compare to living in pain for the rest of one's life? My mom suffered with a bunion so understand your challenge. Sounds as tho you have recieved some good medical advice. EP

cindyloo...you do not want the orthotic to mold to your feet ! That is exactly the wrong way to look at the entire process. Your foot has a genetic defect..it is called Morton's foot. It has several components. As busy bee stated there is only so much that can be done but surgery is a radical fix and is NOT permanent. The toes will go back eventually....but...custom orthotics over time can prevent and slow the changes in the foot. Precisely because they do not mold to the foot. They reroute the pressure areas and alter the progression of the genetic disorder...not cure...slow/correct. Just like BP or Diabetes...control...not cure with medicine. The custom orthotics need to be replaced at regular intervals as the foot changes and the person making them interprets the changes and continues to remodel the orthotic and enhance the gait. Hope this explains the process. I am sure that non-custom orthotics help many. I guess that BB&B 's set up would be fine for many. But...there are those of us with severely deformed feet due to genetic problems and for that one needs a custom product that is monitored just as closely as your BP med is ! These are your only mode of transportation we are talking about !! Feet....don't mess around :) c

The foot and all the muscles/tendons around it can be a challenge to figure out.....unless you're a foot profession/physical therapist. You can have a pain at one end of your foot, and its caused from something at the other end (or even a shortened calf muscle). I fear you just haven't seen the right doctor yet. My experience with podiatrists has run the continuum from totally useless to absolutely a miracle worker......so don't give up hope. You just have to keep looking. I personally have found podiatrists to be much better than orthopedic docs. I don't know why. Don't give up. I spent quite a while in total pain, unable to hardly walk (with plantar fasciitis), and once I found the right podiatrist, he fixed it. I was finally pain free! It included a steroid injection to start with, and then custom inlays that I wore all day, every day. I eventually didn't need them anymore. You might also have to be on NSAIDS for awhile, if you can tolerate them. Good luck to you!

I have had one bout of sciatica that came on suddenly and was incredibly painful-quoted the above insights because what has worked for me is Pilates. I was taking group lessons and when the trainer went out on her own I followed her. She is very good at getting me to move and stretch past what I would do on my own without straining or overdoing it; Pilates of course is also all about strengthening one's core muscles and I've not had any more sciatic problems. Thank goodness for that, it was one of the most excruciating pains I've ever experienced. Ann

I purchased a really expensive pair of shoes a number of years back...after wearing them for about 6-8 months my feet started to really hurt around the outsides (nearest the baby toes)...fortunately we have a podiatrist as a friend...he asked me if I'd gotten "new" shoes...recommended I get rid of them. I tossed them and have never had that problem again.
He said that if I continued wearing a shoe that didn't fit properly that I would develop bunions and more!

P.S.
I meant to add that as a hairdresser I stand on my feet hours on end...and of the thirty plus years of hunting down a shoe that I could wear for long periods of time, the Croc comes in TOPS bar none.

Nola...I feel for you...

I have one on the outside of my right foot on the bone just below my pinky toe..

It's not a calous...but sometimes it hurts so bad I can't hardly take a step...then other times it doesn't hurt at all...

I have terribly painful bunions. I use YogaToes every evening at home and I think they help. However, I will probalby end up with surgery in the long run. My mom had it and it was very successful (both feet) but I've also heard horror stories about how it made the feet worse. I'm torn, so I'll keep using my Yoga Toes!
