painful heal pain

I have had pain in the back of my heal, ( NOT the Bottom of my foot, ) for over a year now. It is not a blister or anything having to do with the skin. ( I tried to move myself by scooting on one foot, not using the other leg at all because of knee surgery. ) Something very painful happened at the back of my heal, I still cannot wear a shoe with a back--too painful--It hurts if I bang the area, or even if I have walked too long. I went to a Podiatrist, who then sent me to physical therapy. The stretches and suggestions from the therapist have not helped me. I do not want to see the the podiatrist again.

Has anyone else had anything like this?? Or any suggestions? Thanks.

Is it your achilles tendon? You might need a steroid injection to help it heal. Did they take xrays?

My Dr. tried to put me into a boot and a shoe, but they both have backs and I could not walk in either of them without -pain-. He then sent me to a podiatrist. Achilles tendon was never mentioned by any of the Drs. or the therapist. I knew that I needed to go in a different direction. No x-rays were taken. But they will be soon, thanks to your advice, I will call my Dr. I just hope it's not too late for me. Thanks soo much!!!

What a nice surprise to find some old friends here this weekend - Florence, I'm glad to see you're doing well - I think of you! We're getting a little break in weather today (spring has been cool, wet). I pruned roses a little late, then found critical deer had done my job over, which led to me pruning again to straighten up what they'd reshaped. Someone has to come to an understanding around here on who gets the final say on the roses :) My fault, I'd been lax in spraying repellent with the uninviting weather, now this afternoon I've got to get that done so it doesn't happen again. Oh jeez I really feel for you! I've never broken ribs as far as I know, but last Spring (2007), I was roughhousing with dog - (about 70 lbs weight)...I was on floor in den on my back and dog pounced on me - on ribs on my left side, front. It hurt bad. A couple days later, roughousing again - this time kneeling on foot of bed and dog came up off floor and socked me again in same spot! OUCH! Needless to say...I had some bad pain to the point of 'seriously considering' going to Doc...as not only did my front ribs hurt, so did I feel like my HEART hurt, my side hurt, as well as my BACK ribs started hurting. I never did go to Doc, - (money issues!) - but I quit rough-housing with dog for a long time. (So, I don't know if it was bruised or cracked, or broken!) I don't think broken or cracked, as I felt like if HAD been, money would not be object! LOL! 3-4 months later still hurting but better, but hurting enough to make me 'concerned' it lasted so long. It finally went away. I'm guessing if you BROKE a rib, it will hurt for quite some time, depending on your age and pain tolerance, of course. I didn't try heat or cold packs, so I don't know. Did you try to get pain killers or ? to help from Doc? I don't sleep on back or stomach, mostly on side...However, I slept anyway I could to feel comfortable! Good Luck, and I hope someone comes along with the heat or cold answer for you. (However, you could call Doc or maybe even a Pharmacy to get answer.)

I've been to the doctor for plantar fasciitis and he did the taping thing which didn't help me at all. I've also been to a few foot doctors and physical therapy. My issue is exactly where your is - in the arch of the foot. I have very high arches. I did get a pair of orthotics from a running store which help too. Here's some exercises to do that really work well from my PT office: 1) Roll your arch over a golf ball. It massages the area and gets into the nooks of the arch. It feels great. AND / OR Freeze a water bottle, then roll your arch over the bottle to massage it for up to 15 minutes. The ice will help the inflammation. 2) Use one of those elastic exercise ribbons and stretch your foot by holding each end of the elastic with your foot in the middle pressing your heel upward so you get that stretch in the arch area. The ribbon should be on your foot pad, not at your arch area when you do this exercise. You can do this laying down or sitting. 3) To strengthens the foot muscles, put a pile of marbles on the floor. Using your toes, pick them up one, two, or three at a time, placing them in a container. Do this twice. 4) Using a slant board or anything sturdy you can put on a slant, like a stepper for instance, stand on it with your toes facing the top of the slant. This will stretch the tendons. DON'T OVER STRETCH OR YOU'LL HURT YOURSELF. All of these should help stretch the area as long as you do them for a few weeks or until it feels better. You can always research the subject on the Internet for more exercises. PT is a very common injury.

This sounds like plantar fascitis. If you search this forum under that term, you will find 4 different threads about this, with lots of good information!

Hi geminigirl,
Could it be a Calcium Spar?(not sure if this is right spelling) I have heard that our body sometimes releases calcium within the body--that gets deposited on the bone itself and causes pain. I had such pain with my right heal. I started using Dr.Scroll's foot gel(at Walmart)--it helped me a bit. Try for a while and let us know if this helps you.

Plantars is on the bottom of the foot, not the back of the heel.

The foot and all the muscles/tendons around it can be a challenge to figure out.....unless you're a foot profession/physical therapist. You can have a pain at one end of your foot, and its caused from something at the other end (or even a shortened calf muscle). I fear you just haven't seen the right doctor yet. My experience with podiatrists has run the continuum from totally useless to absolutely a miracle worker......so don't give up hope. You just have to keep looking.
I personally have found podiatrists to be much better than orthopedic docs. I don't know why.
Don't give up. I spent quite a while in total pain, unable to hardly walk (with plantar fasciitis), and once I found the right podiatrist, he fixed it. I was finally pain free! It included a steroid injection to start with, and then custom inlays that I wore all day, every day. I eventually didn't need them anymore.
You might also have to be on NSAIDS for awhile, if you can tolerate them.

I was told by the physical therapist that I had very tight tendons and they just needed to be stretched out. But that just made my heal worse! This time at the Drs. office I will have many questions to ask before he does anything. Like what does he think it is, and is he going to x-ray or MRI. the heal. No more pushing me off to therapy before I know what I'm dealing with, and so does the Dr. Thanks Everyone
