"The father of teen sailor Abby Sunderland told The NY Post that he's broke and had signed a contract to do a reality show, "Adventures in Sunderland," about his family of daredevil kids weeks after she set off on her doomed and dangerous solo sail around the globe.

Laurence Sunderland, a sailing instructor who lives in the middle-class Los Angeles suburb of Thousand Oaks with his pregnant wife and seven kids, opened their home to film crews four months ago."

I'm not sure what kind of parents these are - nurturing parents who allowed their daughter to fulfill her dreams, or Balloon boy 2?

I'm sorry but this is WRONG. I do not think they deserve the attention that they are receiving and frankly, I think they should be held responsible to pay for rescue expenses. What if that one rescuer had died when he went in the water? I realize that they say they are broke, but I think that an irrevocable judgement should be filed against them. That way should the day come that any of them make $$$ or they land a tv show, that the judgement must be repaid.

I am so fed up with the "all about me" attitude that exists.

We really enjoy CSI, all of them. Usually only watch the 11pm show though. I like the amount of advertizing ('cause I have time then to do the whole day's dishes that I didn't do during the day.) CSI is about the only show I watch these days 'cause I am either working on business stuff or working outside in the yard and only have time to sit down after dark. Now, dark is after 10 pm already. I really enjoy gardening shows on TV but in the last few years the quality of the gardening shows has gone 'down the tubes'. We used to get shows about the plants, about how to do things in your garden, shows that taught you something about gardening. I really enjoyed Ken Beattie's show, 'Get Growing' on Saturday am until they cancelled it last year. Now, the new thing out is to quickly make over one yard and since the neighbor has the identical backyard, let's see what each landscaper can do to make them look different. No information about the plants is given. So...I am tempted to cancel HGTV. In the summer when I want to work outside that is when the TV producers used to air the gardening shows...not in the winter when I had the time to sit down for the evening. Now, it doesn't make any difference 'cause there are no really good informative gardening shows on anyways. There...my 'beef' for the day. Brenda

In my state, 25% of bats carry the rabies virus. That's not good odds, when you wake up with a bat in your bedroom. There have been enough cases of rabies from bats where they could not figure out if the victim was bitten or just touched the saliva or something else. If rabies wasn't fatal once the symptoms start showing, it would be a different story. But the only way to prevent dying from rabies if you have been infected is to get the shots soon enough. Last week, we found a bat in the kitchen sink one morning. Because we sleep with the bedroom doors open, the bat could have been flying in our rooms as we slept. Therefore, it needed to be tested for rabies. A call to the state department of Public Health brought a Fish and Game official to our door less than two hours later. We had the results of the rabies test four hours after that. (It was negative. However the bat was infected with white nose disease, which is killing off a lot of bats in our area.) At no point did anyone from the state suggest that we were fear-mongering or making a mountain out of a molehill. Everyone was polite, concerned and determined to act fast. They took the bat seriously. So did I. There's no need to panic if you find a bat in your house. But there is a need to take it seriously and get it checked for rabies if anyone was asleep in any of the rooms it was in.

From what I've read on the Internet, Eileen Atkins (Lady Maude), who wrote the original U/D series with Jean Marsh, didn't care for how the screenwriters were proceeding, so she quit, but I think the screenwriters could've explained her character's absence a little more smoothly. The Jean Marsh character's absence was handled even more strangely, I think. I read that Jean Marsh had a slight stroke and a heart attack last year. For two other period dramas, you should see if you can find "House of Eliott" (which Atkins and Marsh also wrote) -- I loved that. And I think I've got "The Buccaneers" in my Netflix lineup (not by them, but def a period drama). Also, "The Duchess of Duke Street" series I got from the library and enjoyed. Been watching "Call the Midwife," too -- and now I know how to pronounce "midwifery"!

I read Daisy Jones & the Six while on vacation. I enjoyed it very much while waiting for planes, trains and automobiles. There were people in my life at that time frame who reminded me of the main character’s. I wasn’t overly close but their lives had many of the same parallel’s. I didn’t feel the addiction’s in the book were glossed over. The way the story was told was in many ways typical of the way that time eases a bit of the harsh reality and softens the edges. In real time I could imagine the volatility on steroids. I won’t give anymore away except to say that in order for Daisy to get to the good place at the end it would have been more realistic to mention how she had to do some serious mending. There are always casualties in the wake along the way.

I've tried to avoid reading about them because the entire situation angers me. I'm thankful that the daughter has been rescued but I have to say that this seems to be just another self serving stunt. How on earth did they finance the daughter's sailing trip? Where is their common sense?

Lynn - I've long thought that extreme sporting adventurers like mountain climbers should have to post a bond or purchase insurance that would cover the costs of a rescue if needed. Obviously not every sport would fall into this category but there are some that are inherently significantly more dangerous than others. Who absorbs the costs associated with the rescue attempts?

i don't care how experiencd she was, or that her brother had done the same thing...they're broke and and live in thousand oaks??? who bought the boat to begin with???
