Please vote on backsplash concept - balancing vintage/industrial
Comments (41)LWO, I believe you're right, that we are tipping heavily toward vintage right now and it may be time to right the boat, so to speak. Here's another thing that occurred to me...I've been searching for a black range because in all my "best" inspiration photos, there is a black range (usually french but sometimes a black pro style like a Viking or a Bluestar) with a stainless steel backsplash and hood. Looks great, but then I realized they also have stainless steel countertops on either side of the classic range, whereas I will have soapstone. More vintage!! Maybe the french range wouldn't work in my case? I could go with a Wolf or Bluestar, and still pair it with the Modern-Aire stainless steel hood, but then what would I use for backsplash? Wouldn't ss be too much then? Plain white subway? plain white subway with utensil rack? LWO and others, care to comment?...See MoreOpinions on ceiling height, beams, coffer please
Comments (5)We have a similar plan at 15' X 41'. Our ceiling height is 9'4", and seems about right. The odd dimension is due to the ICF forms that the house is built from. I plan a coffered ceiling in the DR, but haven't gotten that far yet. Our space has a large cased opening between each 'room' to break up the huge room a bit. The opening is smaller than the room by 20" on each side, and 16" from the ceiling. The pic is looking toward the kitchen....See MorePlease make suggestions on overall L-shaped/Island K layout
Comments (34)Thanks all so very much. I'm jamming for leaving at 5AM Weds. to drive to the land. I understand what seems to be at least 2 votes for keeping fridge in "niche" at periphery and single wall oven & microwave in corner; and the rationale for doing so even with its greater distance to cooktop. Tons of votes for more windows - will think about that. The cooktop wall faces North and in Oregon mountains paying some attention to energy efficiency is warranted; views are wonderful, but not the knock out view to the west. You might see original post of overview of 1st floor. While K, might not have many windows itself, it is open to windows in an arc of perhaps 280 degrees through DR, LR, and Entry. This is NOT a substitute for windows that are within arms reach, so might keep the one in the corner and simply add one to where I was mentioning. The image below is from the LR looking toward K. None of the furniture is right, none of the colors are other than the defaults in the software. Windows in DR, and proposed for K are about right. From where this camera view is taken in LR the window wall to the left will have a 9' picture window, plus a smaller one and these will be borrowed views from K (prep sink in particular when looking at a diagonal). The mountain shown in the image is NOT at all accurate and any mountain view to the N thru DR will show Mount Jefferson as quite small and over 39 miles away. For views to west the mountains are only 18 miles. Thanks for all of the continued help and interest. I will provide prelim elevations after I get back from trip and look forward to adding windows. My designer/architect loves windows, but even he showed restraint so while I won't skimp in K, it might be fine with one or at most two - will see....See MoreLuxury Vinyl Plank opinions, please
Comments (17)jakkom, I am also choosing Mannington Adura, but having a tough time with the color options! I want a color that will stand the test of time (not trendy), warm, light to medium brown and I would say my decor leans towards tropical/Hawaiian. A lot of the vinyl colors are trying too hard and end up very busy and stripey, The Oak looks really good in this regard, but then Oak is, well, Oak and I was hoping for something a little different. I'm wondering which Essex Oak you went with...is it "Natural" or "Honeytone"? It seems the Natural looks less grainy but also a little less warm looking and in some lights falls a little flat and goes a hair pink. The Honeytone is warmer but more grainy. I definitely don't want an orangey Oak, does yours go orangey at all? The other color I was considering for its plainness and non-oakyness was Canadian Maple, but can that be combined with a warm tropical vibe? And it seems like it would show every little speck of dirt if I don't clean all the time. To the other extreme I was looking at Burma Teak Butternut. The coloring is tropical but I fear it will be too stripey busy and scream "look at me". Thoughts? Also your vinyl stair treads look fabulous, the installers did a great job cutting them to butt flush against the wall without adding fussy trim pieces. Do you know how they did that? My installer doesn't want to do the vinyl stair caps because he said there are often not perfect straight edges on either side of stair treads at the wall and wood is easier to cut and sand to get that exact fit so you don't see thin gap lines at the side wall edges. Also, do you think a carpet runner down the center could be put down on top of the vinyl or if that is my plan should I go with wood for all the stapling that would happen and it would put holes in the vinyl? Do you have any pictures you could post of a full length of your stairs and the room with the Essex Oak with furniture in it now? I'm hoping to hear from jakkom but any one else please chime in as well! FYI, I am also having my installer do the glue down method. I have looked at other brands including Modin (which can be special ordered to do glue down, but the color choices just aren't right unfortunately... they look so different online vs in person samples). Many thanks! Lisa B...See More- 12 years ago
