Please vote on backsplash concept - balancing vintage/industrial
Comments (41)LWO, I believe you're right, that we are tipping heavily toward vintage right now and it may be time to right the boat, so to speak. Here's another thing that occurred to me...I've been searching for a black range because in all my "best" inspiration photos, there is a black range (usually french but sometimes a black pro style like a Viking or a Bluestar) with a stainless steel backsplash and hood. Looks great, but then I realized they also have stainless steel countertops on either side of the classic range, whereas I will have soapstone. More vintage!! Maybe the french range wouldn't work in my case? I could go with a Wolf or Bluestar, and still pair it with the Modern-Aire stainless steel hood, but then what would I use for backsplash? Wouldn't ss be too much then? Plain white subway? plain white subway with utensil rack? LWO and others, care to comment?...See MoreLuxury Vinyl Plank opinions, please
Comments (17)jakkom, I am also choosing Mannington Adura, but having a tough time with the color options! I want a color that will stand the test of time (not trendy), warm, light to medium brown and I would say my decor leans towards tropical/Hawaiian. A lot of the vinyl colors are trying too hard and end up very busy and stripey, The Oak looks really good in this regard, but then Oak is, well, Oak and I was hoping for something a little different. I'm wondering which Essex Oak you went with...is it "Natural" or "Honeytone"? It seems the Natural looks less grainy but also a little less warm looking and in some lights falls a little flat and goes a hair pink. The Honeytone is warmer but more grainy. I definitely don't want an orangey Oak, does yours go orangey at all? The other color I was considering for its plainness and non-oakyness was Canadian Maple, but can that be combined with a warm tropical vibe? And it seems like it would show every little speck of dirt if I don't clean all the time. To the other extreme I was looking at Burma Teak Butternut. The coloring is tropical but I fear it will be too stripey busy and scream "look at me". Thoughts? Also your vinyl stair treads look fabulous, the installers did a great job cutting them to butt flush against the wall without adding fussy trim pieces. Do you know how they did that? My installer doesn't want to do the vinyl stair caps because he said there are often not perfect straight edges on either side of stair treads at the wall and wood is easier to cut and sand to get that exact fit so you don't see thin gap lines at the side wall edges. Also, do you think a carpet runner down the center could be put down on top of the vinyl or if that is my plan should I go with wood for all the stapling that would happen and it would put holes in the vinyl? Do you have any pictures you could post of a full length of your stairs and the room with the Essex Oak with furniture in it now? I'm hoping to hear from jakkom but any one else please chime in as well! FYI, I am also having my installer do the glue down method. I have looked at other brands including Modin (which can be special ordered to do glue down, but the color choices just aren't right unfortunately... they look so different online vs in person samples). Comments (5)Look for a vintage set (table and chairs) in a wood tone similar to the top of your dining table. I think that would lighten up the kitchen and yet connect with the other rooms. I would get backless stools for perching, remove or lighten the shade on the door and find a more colorful rug for under the kitchen table or even paint the base of the table a bright turquoise or apple green. Can't quite tell what other colors you have as accents....See Moreopinions please
Comments (18)garbryjer, if you take lisa_a's advice to include a prep sink, I think you have a nice eat-in kitchen. Without the prep sink, you have the exact layout of my grandmother's kitchen, where we had all our extended family holiday meals (and many meals in between) throughout my childhood, although her range was directly beside the back door, and her bedroom door was beside the fridge. She kept the table pushed against the wall until meal times, then it was just taken for granted that we pulled the table out so that kids could slide into the wall seats. My table is on wheels, and we do the same if we have the family over. I love your idea to have the table in the kitchen! We raised three children, and always had an upright freezer and an extra fridge in the mudroom, with a 30" fridge in the kitchen, so I think the two units in your plan are fine. I keep extra grains and flour in the mudroom fridge, to discourage vermin, and freeze peaches and other fruits. Also bought frozen meats on sale or on the hoof. Does the fridge come with the choice to switch the door swing so that both doors swing to the outside? Does the manufacturer recommend air space on all sides? I would include cabinets above the fridge and freezer, for seldom used items, sheet pans, etc., and to eliminated dust collection. Good luck!...See MoreRelated Professionals
