why did big mirrors become dated?
Comments (38)Flyleft--Years ago I had a wonderful brownstone which we rehabbed. My first experience. We had a good architect who planned the whole thing and I didn't ask too many questions. I basically picked the bathtub I wanted, with a skylight over it hehehe, and focused on the kitchen. When the bathroom vanity went in the sinks were so small I spent the next 8 years hating those sinks. Also, they were low and undermounted. Since then I have a special bug about bathroom sinks -- they need to be big enough and high enough to be comfortable. I was very careful when we did our reno this last time. For me, the important part is the bowl size, followed by the deck. You'll laugh but when I googled your sink I went right to the dimensions. They are generous, the bowl is deep enough. I really do like vessel sinks. They are beautiful if they are large enough and work with the faucet well. Even the slab one could be a good idea for a his and her in a very modern bath. But whoever is designing this stuff needs to know what they are doing, which isn't always the case. And sometimes things are styled for magazines and not really functional -- then people fall in love with the look and actually install it. Oy....See MoreBathroom Floor Reno Disaster - Big Hole!!
Comments (6)I didn't know that about cork! I did some online research but didn't know that about the underlying layers. Back to the floor drawing board. (I have cork in my kitchen and thought it wuold be nice in the bath since it is right down the hall from the kitchen was all). I did some... poking around.. and the hole literally goes through to my crawl space. Maybe I should have posted in the "disaster forum!" I think I need to do some more digging (no pun intended) to figure out what to do next. Thanks for both of your advice!...See MoreHow big is yours and is it big enough?
Comments (56)phyl - about the quality? about the acronym? Sorry -- how do I know what? :) About the quality -- well, I know it the same way everyone else knows it -- you see it in someone's house and you think "hey, that looks pretty fine" and then you look closer. You see it in a store and you think - hey, that looks great, only ... then you look closer. You see what these things look like in houses with time. I see them online and living in a massive urban importing-area (LA), I even at one point noticed an online place that had a "warehouse/showroom" close-ish to me (40 min drive) so I went to look at the stuff. And it looks neat there in person, too. But the quality isn't great. There's massive amounts of wasted space between drawers, and pressboard, and staples -- all the stuff we all know about regarding kitchen cabinets. It's all the same-old. And sometimes we're OK with lesser quality; heck we most of us will die before even these lower-quality cabinets deteriorate anyway. But truthfully, my maquilladora-hand/custom-made kitchen cabinets make me smile every day ..... oh wait, I'm suddenly remembering what you meant in the "how do you know" department!! Didn't I say ask me about the faucet-sink mismatch!? lol. Well --- OK, so you're not wanting diatribe #47 about why I'm completely non-plussed about bathroom cabinetry and am still living with a non-functional bathroom after 2 years .... it's the faucet story you want! :) OK - I bought a really nice sideboard used to make into a vanity for my kids' bathroom and wanted, per their instructions, for the sink to be "pretty" -- so I got a really pretty sink bowl and then went to look for faucets to match its 'prettiness' with the help of I thought a really good small-time favorite-of-the-trades plumbing shop locally, run by a real live person-who-knows-everything. She steered me to these "perfect" faucets that were really pretty and matched the sink perfectly only ... somehow she managed to forget to think about the throw, or whatever the correct word is, of that faucet. It's way too close to the back edge of the sink. It's been a constant headache ever since. Constant. I'm so annoyed! This is supposed to have been her specialty and honestly, it's not rocket science. What else is there to think about if you're selling faucets to go with a sink? *I* didn't know about it because I'd never done this before! But I won't make that same mistake again and you shouldn't either. Make sure the faucet's spout comes out far enough to be close-ish to the sink's drain hole. :) OK, so that's what you wanted to know, right? sigh.... There is not one single solitary day for two years now I have not rued the choice of those faucets! Beware!!!!...See Morehide your valuables when having reno work
Comments (34)I am so sorry you had this experience. Things like this leave one feeling violated. I don't think it matters how friendly you may be with the crew, stuff happens. I try to be as nice as possible when people are here working, making coffee, handing out cokes or water, even baking cookies at times. Yet, I have been hit several times. It's very upsetting. I have had a large antique china punch bowl stolen, various tools, plus dozens of bottles of champagne that my cousin had packed away in boxes I was storing for her - she's still mad at me and holds it against me that her bottles were stolen. It's amazing how invasive some workmen can be when they want to steal something, because everything stolen was buried deep in boxes, not out on display. We didn't discover the thefts until long after they were gone. It was sickening. Who knows what else was taken as so much is still packed away. I am about to have a lot more work done here and am worried about how to protect what I have. Believe it or not, last time I actually hid our silver under the floorboards - we have wide board floors and some were loose in a closet. Obviously, that's where I should have put the champagne. But, I never would have guessed anyone would have taken the big bowl which had been a special gift to me from my husband. A pox on the thieves! I am thinking seriously of getting security cameras and simply letting every crew know we have an elaborate system. My brother is a contractor and has them all over his worksites....See Moremmhmmgood
