Fiestaware bowls: could use some input!
Comments (21)This is a great comparison picture. I have the bowls on the left -- they are officially called Medium Bowls. I like them because they're a good size for an adult serving of soup ... or a casserole. They are very sturdy, and none of mine have even a chip -- and I've dropped them on my linoleum floor (I wonder if they would've survived tile floors). I like that the sides are very straight because it's easy to "chase" that last bit of food and scoop it up on your spoon. I also have the Fruit Bowls, which are useful in an entirely different way. I would like to add a few of those Gusto bowls for chili and similar meals, but since I already have the Medium Bowls, it's hard to justify. However, two negatives about the Medium Bowls: 1) They take up a lot of space in the cabinet. 2) They must be spaced out "two prongs apart" in the dishwasher, meaning I get fewer dishes per load. Changing the subject a little -- now I'm talking about plates: Someone mentioned Kohl's sells Fiestaware. Note that they sell what they call "buffet plates", which are a smaller plate. Yeah, I know, when you say "buffet", I think bigger, but it is what it is. I love them: We use them for small meals like sandwiches. My daughter has full-sized Fiestaware dinner plates, and the size /weight difference is surprising. The point: Kohl's is the ONLY PLACE that sells that buffet size plate, so if you start buying plates there, you're locked in for your plate purchases....See MoreHow to make my earthy kitchen go with the rest of my house?
Comments (28)I absolutely adore that blue hutch in your kitchen and the sunroom ceiling color. Amazing! Seeing the tones in those and the floor/cabinets/counters, I would chose a fairly neutral tone trim color like BM Simply White. If the tone has any warm reds it could read pink (our engineered cherry floors did this to us) or yellows it will emphasize the counters. Since your floors have an orange tone (at least on my monitor) and that's opposite on the color wheel from the blue hutch and accents throughout your home, I recommend not encouraging or contrasting that color. Essentially, adding more warm color tones like Cotton Balls would make the warm tones even more dominant and adding cool would provide contrast, potentially making the warm pop more. A neutral tone will let the two coexist without dominance. Threers is right about lighting too. My husband rebelled at daylight lights in most rooms, but our kitchen was the one room that really needed it. Higher kelvins can wash out some of the warm tones, which can make the colors better go with the rest of your home....See MoreFiestaware......
Comments (28)It is only the vintage Fiestaware that had radioactive glazes. And that was discontinued in the early 70's. Although the EPA has warned against these items being used to serve or store food, I had an extensive collection of vintage Fiesta that I did use (although not for daily use.....at the time it was too valuable for that :-)) and did use the red plates and serving pieces (Ivory also had a radioactive glaze) and no one ever dropped dead from radiation poisoning!! And considering how popular and extensively this china was used back in the day, I'm sure thousands have eaten off of radiated glazes.......and likely with no ill effects. Modern Fiesta - introduced first in 1986 - have radiation free glazes and are perfectly "safe" to use. But none of the 34 colors they now offer matches the original 13 vintage Fiesta colors. I don't care for many of the new colors but do purchase occasional pieces to compliment my current everyday dishes - not Fiesta but in the vintage Fiesta primary colors (or close to it). I like that you can purchase single items from open stock and not just a full place setting....See Morei need to choose a paint color to go in my kitchen.
