Looks to me like you should be all right. Snow should be gone on Wednesday. Snow or no snow, moving is definitely the worst day of the year and can be very stressful.

Relax and just flow with the entire event.

It's such a little thing, but such a big thing too. Being settled in before Christmas would give a great start to next year. I know how you feel about the snow gumming up the works. My soapstone countertops were here (Binghamton) last week, but aren't here(my house) because the truck couldn't make it up the hill because of the ice storm. Snow + ice + hills make for tough deliveries. When we first moved here from further upstate(read flat, flat, flat) we couldn't understand why everything ground to a halt when it snowed, but it's those darn hills making things difficult.

Fingers crossed that the roads will stay clear and you'll be in your new home in time to throw some garland up.

You have my sympathies...I don't think weather was ever a cause, but we ran into many delays on our build. We promised the kids we wouldn't do a 2nd Christmas in the single wide, but weren't ready to move in by then. (I thought we'd be in in October, but instead, it was the very end of February...and we're still not completely finished now, of course!) We plopped the Christmas tree on the plywood floor, moved the drying trim I was finishing into the next room, and had Christmas there anyway. Concentrate on a great Christmas with your family, no matter where or how finished. Once you move in the delays will quickly become a distant memory.

I also sympathize with the weather issue. Isn't this so unusual for us to deal with? Freezing right along with you....Brrr.

I'm reading the weather reports today, and if anything they're getting worse:

It's not sounding like anything will be happening until Christmas at least. I know it could be worse and obviously I can't control it, but I was hopeful. At least the contractor made it in today to do some punchlist items - we hadn't been to the house since the snow started on Sunday and it turns out some of the pipes were frozen, apparently not insulated correctly? I don't know, he and DH are dealing with it, thankfully nothing burst so they just have to thaw and insulate them, I think.

Normally I love our rare "winter weeks" here in Portland. If this one had just waited until next week I would have been fine, too! Oh well, wasn't meant to be, I suppose. Now I just have to figure out how to handle the rest of the packing - we'd been boxing things up assuming if it wasn't needed by this Friday we'd box it. Now we have an indeterminate length of time, so we'll have to be more flexible or at least remember where we packed things so we can open them back up if needed!

This thread is a bit of "old home" for me. I went to grad school in Binghamton and lived in Portland up until about a year and a half ago.

Delays are frustrating but inevitable, it seems. You just have to make the best of it.

I wouldn't mind seeing some of the white stuff in the Atlanta, GA area; especially as a "displaced" (read permanently as I married a Southerner) Oregon-born girl. My heart is still out West in Northern California (Mt. Shasta) and Oregon (Portland, Salem). Blow it east, will you?!!!

Boy, I'll give it a try, deck61. I live in Grass Valley, CA and we lost our lights, water and heat Saturday evening. We're finally back in business today but it's supposed to be 16 degrees tonight. Our son is going home tonight from college and there is black ice everywhere.

Oh Snowyshasta, I KNOW! Thanks to the weather my fireplace isn't going to be done by Christmas, so the stockings will be hanging from nails into 2x4's rather than over the lovely carrara marble. Usually I love our snow days, but not when they throw my holiday plans so totally out of wack!

I was just thinking, maybe this is what I get for starting our remodel and choosing the name *Snowy* Shasta. It stands to reason I'll get snowed in before we finish, right? Trying to look for some humor in the situation :-)

Would love to send some your way, you can have it! Usually I do enjoy our hunker down at home storms, just bad timing this year. Sorry about your fireplace justnotmartha! I'm sure the kids won't mind, right? We were just talking tonight about possibly not having a Christmas tree if we're still in a rental. The kids didn't mind too much (so long as there are presents somewhere) but it does seem a little sad. Not really worth decorating just to move, though.

We'll see what tomorrow brings - sounds like anywhere from 2 inches to 8 may show up!

Latest update, it is snowing another inch or so thus far. We were thinking we'd hold off and just wait, but today we found out that the weather is not supposed to get above freezing through at least next Wednesday, so who knows how long the snow will last. Plus another storm forecasted to come through this weekend. And we talked to Verizon and they are planning to move our phone (and TV and internet) on Friday, and if we reschedule the earliest possible date is 12/30. We have to be out of this rental on 12/31. And of course who knows if the weather will be any better then.

So, now we're thinking we will tell the contractor it's his job to get the cleaning people there today or tomorrow. They can rent them a 4-wheel drive or something. Then move on Friday. If the movers don't make it, just take the minimum and move in, letting the furniture come when the movers can do it.

Someday we will look back at this and laugh, right?

We are close, please keep your fingers crossed for me! The storm yesterday only brought 2 inches (low end of the 2-6 forecast). The cleaners came today, and the house is now beautiful (it'll never be this clean again...)

I confirmed with the movers that they will be here tomorrow at 9 AM to start moving stuff. Now I just have to hope the freeze tonight doesn't make things too impassible. I'm going over tomorrow as soon as it's light to take pictures of my finished kitchen :-)

My sister is in the midst of her kitchen remodel (about 100 miles north of you) and the floors were scheduled to go in today (for kitchen and half the main floor). What would normally be a 1 1/2 hour drive for the installers to get to her house took them 7 hours! They are working through the night, because there's no use hitting the icy roads to try to go home...and then try to get back to finish.

2 of my siblings and their kids/spouses are coming into the state for Christmas next week...The first time all my siblings and parents have been together in 9 years, and the first time we'll be meeting my nephews' wives. My mom is beside herself worrying that it won't happen or that we'll all have to drive in unsafe conditions. The first time we haven't hoped for a white Christmas!

Keeping fingers and toes crossed for you. Driving to and from work in icy fog hasn't been fun. It is so cold here but not as bad as a couple of years ago when all the oranges, lemons, etc., froze. Can't wait for July and 110 degrees. I miss the sun!

We made it! I am so happy. There was a little snow last night, but nothing bad, and it actually got above freezing today to make the road reasonably clear. The movers we got were *wonderful* and worked hard all day. We are in! There are a few odds and ends at the rental, and it's going to take me forever to unpack and organize, but I'm happy right now :-)

Rhome, I hope your family get-together happens just fine for you! It sounds like a lot of fun. And I hope your sister's remodel comes off well, too.

I promise I'll post pictures soon, but I'm tired tonight and have to find all of my childrens' beds still.

I get exhausted just looking at all the boxes! But we'll get unpacked someday. And we were just in the nick of time - it started snowing again early this morning. I should go measure, but I bet at least 4 inches so far.

I have my pictures all taken but am waiting for DH to set up my desk so I can set up my home computer to download them all onto. Except now he can't find the bag with all the hardware. It's here somewhere...

Thanks! It has kept snowing - I measured tonight and it's 18 inches of snow! I'm so glad we made it in last weekend. I finally have my home computer set up, too, so posted my finished pictures. It feels nice to be in and done with construction.

Claybabe, I did read that the highway (84) through the gorge has been reopened, all sanded and deiced. So your relatives may be able to make it through today. Apparently it will get worse tomorrow, or at least another storm is expected. Hopefully they will make it through safely if they decide to go!

Ugh..our tile backsplash is not in for our holiday parties because the tile installer cannot get his van here due to slippery roads, but I don't care because my parents cannot come for Christmas due to the weather here in Wisconsin :-(

I HATE this weather, why did we move back from Florida? Cheaper housing, nice architecture, (oh yeah, no family around).

David123, I hear you and so sorry about your parents not being able to make it :-( We are supposed to have a family gathering this evening (Christmas Eve) with my grandparents and other extended family, but I don't think we'll be able to have it with all the snow.

And, we are still missing one shipment from Amazon. They say it will be delivered today, but the mailman hasn't made it here the past two days. If it was all gifts from me to the kids not terrible, but a couple items are from Santa. Fingers crossed it actually arrives today!

Heh heh heh: They are hardy (and thrifty) souls, and drove straight through to southern Oregon (arrived 5am today). They apparently have some harrowing experiences to share when they return (can't wait!), and said that the 205 was stopped (midnight or so), so they took 99...which turned into possibly an even bigger adventure. Thanks for asking, and thanks again for the info yesterday (I passed it on).

Whew, glad they made it in one piece! We are finally today, 2 weeks after the initial storm, reliably above freezing. The roads should be clear in a day or two (major ones already are). We're still waiting on our package, though, Santa had to rearrange his plans.
