Pimped out cabinets and kitchens

It sounds graphic I know! Sorry, but I couldn't think of another way to describe stock cabinets that get all "gussied" up by added molding and strategic placement! Do you have any to show that you took from good to great? And what did you do? Tips? Sources? Or even ideas? Thanks, I have some ideas but you guys know all the tricks to make a kitchen go from good, to great!

LOL! That's one way to get some attention for your post :)

I like plate racks, under cabinet shelves (on upper cabinets) little drawer storage (apothecary drawers?) for herbs, etc. Anything that makes the cabinets look more old fashioned.

Moldings are nice and I know a lot of people like the built-in appliance 'garages' but I don't need any of those...not very many small appliances! LOL

I'm an old fashioned cook, who doesn't have a counter top mixer (although I know many people love them), coffee pot (switched to tea), bread machine (learned to bake bread from grandma...and I think it tastes a little better) etc. I do have a toaster and a tea kettle on the stove. Anything else goes in the pantry, to be pulled out when needed (which is not often) except for my husband's deep fryer :)

I do love to bake, but I have a couple of old mixing bowls (from my mom and grandma) and a hand mixer for frosting...just looking for a big board to roll out bread...and a little more space to work. Nothing against all the fun appliances, but they take up a lot of space...and I just don't use them.

What kind of "gussied up" were you considering, for your kitchen?

LL- In my neck of the woods, laminate and oak cabinets are STILL king!!! Crown molding, corbels, and brackets were ripped out of homes long ago and are rare. Besides GW, and the internet I am adrift in a sea of knotty pine and lodge decor here!

I was hoping to see some "aftermarket" ideas for molding, corbels,brackets, and lighting since I have to be my own KD here. I know many cabinet lines sell these, but hopefully someone else has used other resources or has some valuable info they would like to share. =)

White Shaker cabinets are timeless and beautiful, as are white subway tile with black black grout. What is NOT timeless and beautiful are trendy expensive items like farmhouse apron sinks, black faucets, glass tile etc...anything that makes it clear the exact year the renovation was done. If you want trendy, stick to items easily replaced, like drawer pulls and knobs, pictures, even paint. Plain slab cabinet doors with hidden pulls look like a dentist's office...it's a kitchen, not a surgical suite. FYI: All those kitchens are way too busy, way too much going on, especially in the backsplashes, and the idea of a white kitchen floor is laughable. And please stop making a big deal out of the range hood which for some reason has become the focus of the room!

snoopy, if you want ideas for a redesigned kitchen, post a full layout with measurements, not only of the kitchen area but also the entire floor. Also, how many people will be living here, how do you cook, and how do you shop? So I've been browsing through Wayfair rugs till my eyes cross. I found one I like that has the colors @deegw suggested, tying in the warm floor tile. But it's wool and $254, so I cringe a bit at its intended use to wipe mud off our shoes. And choke at the price. Another option: 3 color variations on a theme: Would yellow work? Or green: Teal option (not enough different from blue?): Multicolor option: All of the above are cotton flatweave, so I could toss them in the washer when the mud starts to show.

I painted oak cabinets like that in my mother's house before I sold it. There was no tannin bleed because the cabinets were properly sealed to begin with. It isn't raw wood that you're dealing with. That's more of an issue with unfinished wood. It was a ton of work but it came out great. I don't put much stock in the "out of style" question either. A raised panel door is a traditional look that keeps coming round. The dark look of the original oak becomes a nice white enamel and brightens the room. The oak grain remains as evidence that the door is solid wood and not particle board or MDF. It comes down to time and budget. For the painting to work you have to do a lot of degreasing. Don't sand away the original finish. That's ruinous. Dull the original finish to help the primer. Multiple topcoats. If you aren't solid with your prep and technique don't bother.
