Pimp my Kitchen..please help!

I am buying my first house and I desperately want to add a dishwasher to this 60’s era kitchen. Can the layout be re-worked to add more counter space and add a dishwasher without breaking the bank? Entire space including dining area is 10X15. Any ideas welcome!

Could you remove the peninsula and put the DW in that space where the corner with the peninsula currently is? Maybe you could re-purpose the peninsula cabinets to a rolling island by placing wheels (that lock) on the bottoms.

That's assuming the flooring continues under the peninsula and is in good shape (or can be fixed up).

I'd get rid of the cabinets above the peninsula as well.

You will, of course, have to replace the counters. I would stick with laminate at this time, it's inexpensive and durable. If you stay more than a few years, you may want to do a complete remodel and tearing out laminate won't be as much of a waste of money as it would if you were tearing out a more expensive counter.

Thanks so much for your ideas, I would have never thought of a rolling island! The peninsula is the probably the best place for it, eventually a full tear out and new kitchen is in order!

I don't remember!!! I think that was the year I only had the one tree which never got fertilized and the rootball never survived the torture. Last year I had many papaya trees and I used a few of them as display plants out at the state fair flower and garden show. They bloomed and set fruit but were not fertilized so they failed to ripen. What I learned last year was that even if you have plants that are 'bisexual' (male and female flowers on the same plant) the first 6-10 flowers that develop will be only female. The female/male flowers combined won't show up til later when the tree is just about done blooming. So you have to have trees at different ages or a frost free fall/early winter or a greenhouse. When you see papaya fruit for sale at the grocery store- the really large long fruit are what are known as Mexican style even though they may come from any tropical country. The short pear shaped fruit are called Hawaiian style even though they can come from other countries besides Hawaii. Its the Hawaiian style that has a 66% chance of having both male and female flowers on the same tree.

Thanks everyone! Hope y'all have a nice holiday. Eld, yes... people's comments were spot on and so helpful. And I forgot to tell Jojoco, I will prob always remember "Fill, Thrill and Spill!" Though I will probably forget that is was about designing centerpieces. ; ) Rita, I was sad to hear they closed. you are my style twin! I love all of these looks. I recently did a kitchen reno; and did white cabinets / dark grey island with white countertops.....and I'm a sucker for greys and moulding; adding white moulding on the walls made SUCH an impact on all of the space and although a bit of extra work, is fairly inexpensive to do for the WOW factor it gives and I can totally see that in your space! inexpensive but impactful changes I could see being amazing in your space too, are changing the metal railing to a horizontal metal style, painting the fireplace white, and having a dark accent colour on the little wall that the fireplace is on; and changing the cabinet hardware and pendants to a rattan or more nautical style. Also, ballard is AMAZING. Have you looked at Serena and Lily? ugh, my absolute fav....now to just win the lottery haha

If you're doing a full tear out and new kitchen later, I would hand wash dishes for now and put money towards the remodel.

snoopy, if you want ideas for a redesigned kitchen, post a full layout with measurements, not only of the kitchen area but also the entire floor.

Also, how many people will be living here, how do you cook, and how do you shop?

Portable dishwashers exist, if I'm not mistaken. That could be a viable budget-friendly temporary solution while you decide on the long term layout of your new kitchen. I mention it because you "desperately want to add a dishwasher". Using a kitchen for a good six months to a year is usually best when figuring out what's working for you and what's not before remodelling. @beckysharp's link is the perfect starting point for your research.
