You or a contractor of your choice would have to fabricate it. Corian is one of those surfaces that the manufacturers license the fabricators in order to have quality control over the results. That means they don't moonlight. It can be worked with woodworking tools like a router and jigsaw, but being a resin product, you can burn it if the tools used are too high RPM or spend too much time in one location.

If it's a light color, it won't show the (inevitable) scratches nearly as badly. And it can be resurfaced by a pro for $300 or so if the scratches become too intolerable.

To utilize a used Corian counter, I'd want to view the scratches it already has in person, and make sure that I had someone that could transport it (it's heavy) as well as fabricate it. And it would have to be CHEAP in order for this to all happen. Any more than about $700-800 and you'd be better off buying it new from an authorized fabricator.

I'd say check with a fabricator. If it's a good deal you will be thrilled with Corian. I have had it in my kitchen for 14 years, it is scratched but I have never once had it buffed out in all those years which I am told would make it look like new. I have an integrated Corian sink that I love too. I recently bought granite for my kitchen and am having second thoughts if I really want to ditch the Corian. It's so smooth to work on, cleans up like a dream, it's non porous so it's sooo easy to wipe up anything on it. It feels so silky smooth. I don't baby it at all, I do use a trivet if it's super hot but otherwise I don't and I've never had a burn mark on it ever. I think you would love it!!! I have 72 square feet of it and will probably put it on CL or give it to my brother but I don't know how I would get it to him!!! He lives two states away. Good luck!

I love our Corian as well. Ours is a light color, Rain Cloud, and it cleans so easily. Nothing has stained it (approx 7 months in).
It is silky and less cold to the touch than stone. It is also lighter than a stone so I don't think transporting is as hard, but if you have long pieces, it won't be light.
Since the depth is already fabricated, it should be an easy job for a pro.... The seams are nearly invisible.

The color is Lava Rock. I wonder how that would look with white cabinets? I will try to go look at it this week. I suppose I could use some of it on the bathroom counters. If there is not enough for one of the cabinet runs in the kitchen, could I buy more of the same color new, and would it match? Thanks for the replies.

We just replaced our 23 year old Corian in our kitchen remodel. The Corian was a cream color with a matte finish and still in very good condition. We did have it professionally buffed out about 8 years ago and when they were finished it looked brand new.
Sometimes we would get some stains (wine, mustard etc.) but they were easily removed with products like Soft Scrub or Bon Ami.

I have a corian countertop on my island and love it. We are having new cabinets installed and we decided to go with corian on the remaining counters because it's so easy to take care of.

Lava rock looks like a darker counter. I was looking at Earth, which is also dark, and the designers discouraged the darker corian colors because scratches really show up. I saw some scratches on the dark counters at the showroom and they did really show. Of course, they can be buffed out. And, I've had our counter for close to 10 years and don't have any deep scratches.

Corian scratches. Dark colors show those scratches particularly badly. It drives some people nuts to always see those scratches. I'd bet that's why this counter is for sale. And I'd bet it's been treated none to gently in storage and become even more scratched. If you couldn't deal with marble in your kitchen, then leave a dark Corian alone. If you are someone who would want to spend $300-$400 every year to keep it polished, Corian isn't for you either. Stone is what you want, if you want a dark surface.

This is only a bargain if it's extraordinarily cheap. You can buy all new slabs of a different acrylic fairly cheaply if you have someone that will fabricate for you. It's not a novice skill. The seams take a good amount of tools and finessing. And you won't find a reputable actual Corian fabricator who will tackle the job, because as Green says, Corian controls them. Part of their profit is selling you the goods. You might find someone who no longer works for an authorized shop, but I'd want to know why they aren't there any more. If the counters are really cheap, you can DIY the fabrication, and like the color, and are OK with it showing the scratches, then and only then grab these slabs.

Router bits must be carbide.
The various fills used in the resin eat steel bits.

Burning is prevented by the correct combination of cutter feed rate and RPM.

Some woods are even worse than Corian and other resin materials (cherry being one).

I've had my Corian for nearly 14 years and have never once had it buffed out. I personally would never pay hundreds of dollars to have it buffed out that is for sure. Mine wears it's scratches well IMO and doesn't need to be babied like that but to each his own of course!!! The scratches don't bother me at all. Every surface has a breaking point where scratches are concerned. I haven't found that Corian scratches any worse than any other surface for some reason. That is just my own personal experience. On the other hand I wouldn't pay more than $100 or $150 for it as it's going to the dump otherwise and the seller will be lucky to get anything for it at all.

I have Swanstone counters installed in 2003 and love them. But like Dupont, Swanstone Corp. controls the kitchen countertop installations. Both companies do this because something like 98% of all complaints were traced to improper installation, so both very quickly took that segment of their business in-house.

Bathroom or non-integral sink installs can be DIY or done by an independent contractor.

If you need seams - and who doesn't? - these are the trickiest of all. I have a U-shaped kitchen, so two corner seams. The installer spent more than 45 minutes on EACH one. They are not "almost" invisible. They ARE invisible! A GC friend who hates 'plastic' counters came to look at our new counters and put his face within two inches to try to find the seams, and couldn't.

I have the beige granite-look (which probably helped with the invisible seam thing), and scratches are invisible. I love the matte finish, and it turns out to be the best pastry surface ever.

I think I'd have reservations about the used Corian you're describing, though. A solid dark does show scratches, and those show up as white. That plus the install issue makes it problematical. Ecological, but maybe better for a bathroom counter or even an outdoor bench or potting table.

I like that color but I have to agree about scratching. I had a friend do Corian and she complained about her family scratching the countertop because when they moved things on it they slid them rather then picking them up to move them. Sliding stuff scratched it easily.

She had it refinished before she sold her house and it looked good.

My mom had Corian put in back in the 90's and I never noticed it scratching (but I never looked for it either) but it was just her and my dad and they were careful.

I have cream and white corian tops in my bathrooms. I really don't notice the scratches and what I like is how easy it is to clean as stated above. When my two daughters are home, make up is flying, along with powders and perfume. It all cleans up without a trace.
Because I have it in my bathrooms, I went with granite for the kitchen. I agree with the above, the dark corian will show the scratches, so I would probably pass on this deal.

We also have 14yr old inherited Corian, U-shaped kitchen, invisible seams if there are any. It is gray with black/white speckles. There are some scratches from the previous owner, not really noticeable though. We use cutting boards so it still looks ok. I never noticed it scratch when moving stuff.

My only complaint is the sink has yellowed over time and does not look good. Stuff like tomato sauce seem to stain it slightly. I was told to soak with bleach for a while, haven't tried it though. I suppose it could be sanded too.

I added an under counter water filter and drilled it for the faucet with a standard hole saw, was actually easy to do.

We are ordering new cabinets, granite counters, stainless sink this time so not a lot of motivation.

I also have corian in my kitchen and bathrooms and love it. however, they are light colors. My sister sold corian for years and always steered customers away from the darker colors because of the noticable scratching.

We have Corian - Maui color which is a speckled medium-color blacks/browns/grays/ little bit of white. It is gorgeous and blends so nicely with our stainless appliances and praline stained cabinets. We did NOT want the hardness of granite which reminds me of nothing but headstones (sorry folks).

We have had it and use it hard(2 young kids) for 9 months now and I. love. it. We are so glad we chose this countertop material.

I agree with those who said do NOT spend a lot on it, because if you hang out and watch prices, you can get expensive Corian quite cheaply... we actually pitted Home Depot and Lowe's against each other and by the time we actually agreed on a price (Lowe's won, btw), I think they were grumbling they made no money on us but were happy to take our business away from HD.

Corian, do really blend with stainless and compared to the granite, it is really soft.. however, granite kitchen countertops are durable.. They also provide an earthly effect.. which is pleasant to look at..

We had it in my childhood home. Three kids, and we were not always kind to the counters. It held up wonderfully. We had the light gray with the white speckles, and it did just great, and still looks really good almost 25 years later. I am not sure if the new owners had any scratches buffed out, but we never did in the 15 years we were there.

I inherited a very dark Corian top in my master bathroom. It must be going on 18 years old now, and it's bulletproof there.

I had corian in my last house, which was the only thing that survived our house fire without notice. That stuff was bulletproof. Mine was an off white, and I don' t remember too many scratches. I liked it very much. I have it in my kids bathrooms now, in this house.

I would not buy it used, unless you can get it dirt cheap. Mine out of my burnt house went who knows where.? Could be getting something like that.

We also have something similar now in our baths (Swanstone). It cleans up so much better than other surfaces in the bathroom IMHO.
