>>>"Way better than a propane countertop option."<<< Well, if you have generator the next time Texas gets cold. . . :>) Good countertop induction cookers (a/k/a Portable Induction Cooktops or PICs) can be "way better" as long as you have power, but many of the inexpensive models are seriously deficient when it comes to a "design for those who want more stove top temperature control" as Jan DeKenis sought. If considering buying a PIC to check out induction, you might want to have a look at recent articles at Cooks Illustrated, CenturyLife, and Wirecutter to get some recommendations on choosing one of the better PIC models. When it comes to full scale electric cooking appliances, though, Pittsburrito is correct that induction stoves and cooktops are very much the electric option with as much (sometimes more) "stovetop temperature control" than gas appliances.

Markar: Sorry, I don't think I can post pictures anytime very soon--I've never done it and don't have time to learn right now, though I have read the instructions on this site. I have pictures on my camera but as yet they are not on my computer or a photo sharing site. I will post some eventually but not sure when. I have lurked for over a year but never posted til now so I'm a novice at this. Basically, I did away with the corner cabinet and cabinets on the sides of the range that used to be part of an L-shaped kitchen. I find corner cabinets awkward and/or a waste of space, and then there were the reasons above for not putting cabinets on the sides of the stove. So now my sink wall, one leg of the L, is the only run of countertop I have, with open shelving above and below. The stove wall, the other leg of the L, has the range in the middle, a tall narrow freestanding metal cabinet to the right which still allows access to the end of the sink wall shelving, and some narrow soapstone shelves sitting on brackets attached to the wall to the left of the stove but with a few inches of space between them and the stove. Perhaps that description is as clear as mud...I will post pictures when I can get around to it. Hope I'm not hijacking this thread too badly.

@JudyG, THAT is just plain BS. Just because you put quotes around your own fairy tale does not make it true, nor does editing your answer to something else just as wrong. I will repeat - until you come up with an actual published code, quite trying to claim it exists - much less add the word "most" to your supposition that there must be that one pot of gold at the end of some rainbow someplace to support your crackpot theory. You will notice that not one of these people can ever come up with an actual code that states this, no matter how many times I offer them the opportunity to prove it in the last 5 years. The only time it is not legal is when the installation instructions are not followed in the first place, regardless of window placement. There is no such thing as a different clearance to a tiled wall or any other non-combustible covering. There is no differentiation in the code, or the testing standards the codes refer to as to whether there is a window in the wall above countertop level, or how far from a window a cooking appliance would have to be if it were a requirement. If there is no minimum distance stated in the code, then how can it be a requirement?? Is it 1 inch or 10 feet? A window on each side of a range will produce the same cross wind as one over a range. Anybody who has 2 broken arms so that they can not shut off the burner for 2 seconds to close a window, probably should not be using the stove either. If the range allows the wall or window behind the range to get over 194°F, then it is the range that is in violation of the codes - not the window. Of course, we all know that CP's little community over the rainbow has gathered every old wives tale code that ever managed to make its way onto the internet, and amended their legal code to make sure they didn't leave any out...They can't even put expansion joints in their concrete slabs because if you end up stepping on a crack, you would break your mother's back!! If you want to watch the "fairytale code" people have a coronary, just skip the hood ;D

I am so happy to have found this post! We are doing the same thing but the shelf itself will be much shallower (thinking only 6" from the wall). I would hesitate from putting plates and bowls over the range because of the aforementioned grease issues and plan to just have small items (salt cellar, pepper mill, etc).
