non-tile ideas for backsplash?

Hello all

I am currently fininshing a minor kitchen remodel. I out in granite countertops, new SS appliances. I kept my Bertch cherry cabinets and hardwood floors. My one remaning large issues is what do for the backsplash. I guess I really don't like tile. I was pretty surea abouta glass tile from Florida tile (6x6) becauseit lookeds great with the granite(Verde Candais) but I keep hesitating on buying it. I had a stainless one made to place behind the range bu I don't think that I want it all around. I thought of installing tin ceiling type material but it's too busy for me. I lookd into a glass product called Spandrel- which are sxheetsof gals cut to size and installed - pretty expensive. I don't think that there are Glasskote dealers around here.

So to sum up, I would love suggestions.

ALso I justlove this forum. I think I am OCD about my kitchen and on this forum I am not alone!

I'm in the same situation. I really want a "solid" color backsplash, not mosaic-y like tile. There is a flexible laminate material put out by Alsa Corp. that I'm considering. I'd have a real sheet of stainless behing the cooktop, and this product everywhere else. It comes in cool patterns and metal-look. alsacorp.com

didn't have time to read all the answers. I have no backsplash and have never regretted it...been over 6 yrs. It is painted with BM matte...which has ceramic in it. It is as beautiful now as it was when first painted. I love the fact that I can showcase other things ...art etc in my kitchen and no competition. Also if I ever want to change it is as quick as a paint brush...expense is minimal..paint only ! All in all I think it is serene as you point out . Here is one pick. Since I have a lot of high heat cooking in my kitchen..built in deep fat fryer as well as gas cook top I can definitely speak to the longevity of paint only. c ( more at this album )

Hi eam44, I've looked at hundreds upon hundreds of white kitchen cabinets. And very few of them have non-white backsplashes. So, I guess I was hoping to find some inspiration images through this post. We are building our home, so we have to pick our options or upgrade to options not provided by the builder. I don't want to spend a lot on tiles b/c we've pretty much upgraded everything else in the kitchen and just want the tiles to accent, but not stand out, so as to not compete against our 90" x 60" walnut island countertop. So, I'm looking for tiles to add warmth, but not add attention. Oh, but there are so many beautiful tiles at glasstileoasis.... Thanks.

lmao. what Jan said! Although, I had to help out my guys who did my herringbone wood floor. it's the starting point where everyone gets messed up. after that, it's simple. Look up how to properly start a herringbone layout and read it. you need to use a speed square at the end of your tile in order to get the proper middle starting point. much easier to illustrate than trying to write it out here. This is how I showed my guys how to start it. see the blue tape w/the two lines? you have to start on the middle after you mark your corner. that's the only way you will get perfect even cuts on both ends. this is how most do it, and it's not correct IF you want perfectly symmetrical left/right borders. All he's done is set the corner of the tile on the line. doing it like this will leave you w/one side smaller than the other: see how the sides of the window don't match? this is what you don't want. your tile guy should be doing a dry layout in order to determine where he starts so he doesn't get this look or these tiny triangles. Again,,,see how the ends don't match below? the right has longer tiles than the left edge. that's because of the way he started his first tile. And don't do these vertical tiles for your edging. get proper bullnose tiles, pencil liner or a Schluter edge. This is a layout board of my herringbone for my shower. took a few hours in order to get this almost perfect. since this was an odd size, and the tiles were even at 3x12, it couldn't be perfect. the right bottom corner triangle is the only portion that doesn't match. luckily, it's not readily visible! Even the subway tiles are perfectly matched. this layout took hours to get exact, even around the niche. 2x6your 3x9 will be 1/3 larger. 3x9 is a good size for a backsplash. this is a regular 3x6. again, a 3x9 will give you 1/3 longer.

Hi Chispa, House is a townhouse built in 1996, trying to modernize the look. As far as decorating style, I like modern/contemporary, nothing too funky. Something that would be cohesive with the rest of the kitchen, and bring the kitchen to life a little. It's very white right now.

Paint, beadboard, wallpaper (talk about naughty!), more granite, artwork,....you have the behind the stove bit taken care of, so the rest is just free for you to play with.

If you like Glasskote, talk to a local glass shop about doing something like it. I've talked to two glass shops near me (in Mass.) and both understood what I was talking about and were willing to do something like it.

Yes, if you like the idea of glass, just call a glass shop. I am currently deciding on glass tiles or tempered glass for my backsplash. The glass that I'm considering would be painted white on the back side, giving it a watery blue-green look and would be done by a local glass shop.

Thanks all for the great ideas. Thought about paint - I may ending up doing that . I will need to put something whjere the wall and counter meet- a strip of a metal or tile like metal something. I also thought about painting rectangles with magnetic paint.
Hey lightly starched- I checked out ALsa Corp- interesting but not right for my kitchen.
I Elizgonz- I did cechk with local glass shops and priced the Spandrel which is tempered glas with paint on the back -it would come out to $100 sq ft- a little pricey.

Check out uscolorglass.com and see if they have a local dealer. My GlassKote estimate was $112/sq ft; my local glass company working with uscolorglass was $56/sq ft.

pamelasummers -- This is just a joke, but I couldn't resist.

Although I'm sure my DH wouldn't admit it, I bet he'd really enjoy the "sheets of gals" you mention as a backsplash, and so would lots of other guys. Come to think of it, that would be one way to get him to help with the cooking; maybe I should look into it! Do you know if they're available in a Catherine Zeta-Jones look?

I hope you find just the backsplash you want; I've just settled on a 4x4 tumbled slate that I think I'll love.

rosie, I hope you're talking about me (in your "from the far side" comment). As a very-long-married, mother-of-4-grown-children, and definitely-on-the-downslope-of-the-hill person living an exceedingly conventional lifestyle, that's the best compliment I've had in a long time, if you were. Just came back from seeing the Sunset Magazine Idea housing in San Francisco. GlassKote provided the sheet glass for the kitchen backsplash and understand they also coated
the master bedroom and bathroom cabinet doors.

I heard that they have a couple of applicators in California. Check out their website www.glasskoteusa.com
