Why not to store plastic in oven--and ?? to do now?

OK, I know better.

But I was in a hurry and stuck this plastic container full of cookies on a rack in the oven.
Then, later, forgot and set the oven to 400.
Then remembered--too late.
Any idea how to remove the plastic drips and strings that are melted to the bottom of the oven? They are very hard and do not respond to spatula or even screwdriver attempts to pry up an edge.

Please tell me you did this once and there is any easy cure!!

oooh, sorry about that mess you have on your hands.
Found an old post, so you ar not alone! I didn't read through it all but it seems to say do what you are doing just heat the oven up a bit to soften the plastic.

I did this too! Or actually my Dh put the plastic in the oven. I never place anything plastic in there because I know I will forget that I did that. Any way, it was a lid to a cake pan. Was.
It dripped all thru 2 oven racks. looked like the Alien threw up in my oven. I just waited till it was cool and peeled it off. Thin edges got a little help with a straight edge razor.

I had been purchasing the "not so great" plants at a discounted price for several weeks and the cashier would list the item on the receipt as damaged - as is. Therefore, no warranty would apply. Then yesterday they were throwing away plants that were in better condition than the ones I had bought. Anyway, I was just surprised. This Lowe's store just doesn't care about their plants. I can tell you that the one in Alpharetta (Windward Parkway) is awesome. They REALLY care about what they do and are very helpful. There is someone always in the garden center willing to help you. I appreciate everyone's stories...it helps me to understand there are some that are compassionate about what they do and are willing to make a decision in the best interest of the plants and then there are some that can't.

My experience is that I told my contractors upfront that I wanted to buy my appliances, sink, fixtures, tile, and lighting myself. They were fine with that because we decided it upfront, I was very specific, and there was no waffling on my part (i.e., like "um, OK, some of the stuff I want to buy, and some you should buy, OK?"). Contractors HATE uncertainty, whether it's delivery time, lack of specifications, or the scope of work of what they're to be doing. So, if they can control those things, they can control costs and work time. So, the contractor steering you to favored suppliers, or having the contractor himself make those purchases gives him that control over how smoothly the entire project will go. If you feel confident in your abilities to source, purchase, and oversee fixtures and materials, you should do it, but you must be very specific with your contractor about it, and put it in writing in the Scope of Work. If you think you may be uncertain, or end up waffling, or not making decisions, you should go with your contractor's suggestions. BTW, my electrician was actually relieved I was to buy all the lighting, receptacles and switches. He didn't like dealing with that stuff, and having to sort out part numbers, lead times, and the like. He said "I'm an electrician, not a parts salesman".

I thought they marked the receipt so it can't be used twice. So you can't buy something, dump it in your car come back and fill your cart with the same thing and show a receipt for it? I love Costco. We buy all our pet meds there, including cases of Ringer's Lactate. And I can't walk out of there with just the prescriptions either - I always end up getting something else. I don't know where the rest of you are shopping, but there are definitely deals at the Costco we go to. Buy in bulk and store it in the garage - especially paper goods, birdseed and cleaning supplies. I have no problem at all with them asking for my card or checking my stuff when I walk out. We once waited in line behind a man who had a cart full of food and party supplies - big quantities. He got up to the cashier, loaded everything onto the checkout, the cashier rang it all up and then he fumbled around and said he forgot his card. I don't know whether he did or didn't but it was embarrassing and time consuming for the rest of us to have to wait while he argued/pleaded with the cashier to ring him up "just this once".

Was reading along enjoying the conversation - when suddenly I was taken aback by comments that.... what... we shouldn't use strong words like "ugly" to critique anyonymous, public domain photos of inanimate objects.... because someone "might" have a house that kinda, sorta looks like it? Apparently some of yall have never taken an art or design course. Critique happens in class and it is how we learn and its not meant to hurt anyone's feelings. FYI - design principles - balance, repetition, scale, etc. - are immutable and have been used in creating design and architecture since.... well, since humans first started painting caves and moving rocks around. Yes, there are design fads and fashions come and go, but the fundamentals of design... balance, repetition, scale etc.,,, are not "opinion," they have to do with how we are hardwired as humans to perceive spatial relationships and how objects relate visually to each other. YOu don't have to have the intellectual knowledge to perceive these relationships - you can just have an intuitive sense that something looks "off." THATS why I enjoy these threads!!! I see the picture and I go OMG, that's ugly but not sure why. And then people explore the "why's".... and I learn from that. Keep it coming!

Boops2012, I'll try a razor tomorrow before I turn on the oven to warm it up and try the suggestions from Localeater's link.

Dry ice? That should make it brittle enough to simply crack off. Whether it removes all of it may be another question!

If any residue is left, then I woukld try warming it slightly (maybe with a heating pad or bottom of stove-top heated cast iron pot with aluminum foil between it and the plastic goo.) Then scrape with s/e razor blade.

Eventually you may just have to burn remaining traces off. It is very toxic to breathe so open the windows, get all pets - especially birds - out, shut internal doors, run the fan and vent the bejabbers out of the room during the burn off.

Good luck! This happened to me once when an igniter went wonky and burned itself up. I did eventually get all the plastic off the oven racks and floor. In my case the heavy stainless steel floor came out so it was less arduous than it would have been if it couldn't be removed. A big PITA!

Thanks, liriodendren (AKA Tulip tree. One of my favorite summer bouquets. Some kind of twig cutter insect cuts the blooms off the huge trees in our neighborhood. Otherwise way out of my reach. I go about and collect them off the ground for bouquets. Each on an eight inch or so stem and in prime shape, 2 or 3 leaves attached. Gorgeous.)

But on the subject of melted plastic: I have this sucker whipped, thanks to you guys. I slightly heated the oven, razored the plastic off the bottom, scraped it thoroughly, and have the cleaning cycle and exhaust fan going as I type.

The few bits stuck to the racks flicked off with the razor. Cookies, here I come!!

Glad you were able to get it off. I have a smooth top stove. Set the remote for kitchen TV on the stove top. Turned on the back burner and stepped away. Well, I actually turned on the front burner and completely melted the remote onto the burner! Of course I had turned the burner on HI. Scraped what I could off while still warm with a spatula and then started scrubbing with smooth top cleaner. Managed to get it all off. Stove was only 2 weeks old!
