Has anyone had to get workman's comp ins for cabinet makers??

Hi all...
Long long time lurker, relatively new member.
I made it out to DutchWood today, and another place called White Deer. White Deer has half the sophistication DutchWood's show room had, but the quality of work seemed comparable.
My husband was talking to someone about use going outside of the contractors kitchen company, and he had mentioned to make sure we asked them about their workman's comp ins.
The invoice for White Deer had some fine print at the bottom, mostly about how they do their work, but there was a line in there about WC that he drew a line through.
I dont know if its something I should really make a point about. I didnt ask anyone yet, as it was my first trip and wanted to see the work more than anything else.
Do you guys think this is work looking into or should I chance it, assuming that they would get no-word-of-mouth referrals from me if I was sued?

They should have their own insurance.
As a matter of fact, depending upon their depth of construction involvement (for a cabinet company, not much) they should also have a liability umbrella.

It's not up to you to insure them.
OTOH, and I'm sure the insurance members will correct me, I would contact my homeowner carrier and talk with them about it.

My homeowers' policy requires that tradesman carry workman's comp. That's because my homeowenrs' policy protects me from liability if someone (tradesperson, guest, delivery person, etc.) sues me for injury while on the premises.

OTOH, you may know that some religions don't hold with any insurance. In general "Amish" meaning Amish, Mennonite, Brethern, Hutterites are among the sects that don't do insurance. They may even be able to avoid state-mandated insurance, I'm not sure about that as it may depend on state law. Possibly only exempt in so far as insurance that would benefit them, not for liability that protects other people.

I bring this up because it has been my assumption that DW is at least partly Amish-run(?) and perhaps the other cabinet maker is, as well?

That may be why there was a line through the form? I think it unlikely that if the cab maker is plain, and elects to forgo workman's comp (and is exempt from state req'd W/C on religious grounds) that they would turn around and sue you. As a rule plain people don't go to law to settle disputes.

I would simply check with your insurance company, and then ask the cab makers. They will not be offended, I'm sure.

It's my understanding that Amish don't use any health, fire, life, personal injury, long-term care, property,
etc. insurance.

The JSI factory is in Fall River MA. The address is: 485 Commerce Drive, Fall River, MA 02720 All of the displays are there and the cabinets are really lovely. However, they don't have full-extension drawers and only self-close not soft close. The drawers close hard/load. I was working with Stacey at Woodlist.com. He got me an appointment to see them. Their site also has a good list of the cabinets and trims available with sketches. The price point is higher than Nieghbors, but Stacey said that was flexible. Their link is below. I also went and saw the Kabinart cabinets that are available from mfkusa.com. They are great! There are lots of choices in doors, colors, cabinets and trim. The construction is top notch. I've got to speak up for Scherr's Custom RTA Cabinets. They are a custom cabinet maker that does RTA cabinets. You get exactly what you want. They assemble as much or as little as you require. I had them assemble my drawer boxes and I did everything else. They have more than three finishes. I had a great experience with them. I will use them again. Scherr's cabinets are made in North Dakota. Leon Scherr has been in business for at least 25 years. They were cost competitive and had really good customer service. You could actually talk to someone. They helped you answer questions and solve problems. That is why I selected them over Barker's. Scherr's does have a rather clunky, old fashioned website. You fill out a form with your requirements and send them a rendering of your plan including measurements. They put it into a CAD and cost it out for you. I think one of the reasons more folks at GW tend to use Barker's is because of Barker's online ordering system. While it's sort of efficient, many people just don't want to talk to anyone and would rather work up an order to see the price. You actually have to talk to someone about your order at Scherr's. I guess people are shy about it. It's a great product and nice group of people.

Has anyone refaced cabinets?

We did a DIY refacing 3 or 4 yrs ago. We liked our footprint, the boxes were sturdy and in good shape. The doors were not a style we liked and they were showing signs of age. I didn't want a full tear out, to be without a working kitchen for weeks, so we opted for the refacing. We used Conestoga materials, very happy with the quality. It was a lot of work, veneering is tedious and tricky, but it came out great. I think hiring someone to reface might not be much cheaper than replacing, due to the labor involved in refacing. But for us, we did save a lot of money by doing it ourselves. Its not a job for everyone, but my husband is handy and he did a good job.

Has anyone had LG appliance delivery back order delays from Lowes?

EXACTLY! After throwing a fit, I finally got my appliances ordered last May on October 18. They substituted a SHarpe microwave because the LG is now on back order at Lowes! (the microwave IS available thru LG website however) And they substituted another model for my LG Range. It was a slightly more expensive model, so we didn't gripe, but it came with no racks, no installation package, no warranty info, no user manual, no air fry tray, no built in thermomter. I spent hours talking to LG AND to Lowes. Finally had to order the installation package myself at $71 and Lowe's is supposed to give me a gift card for that amount. Lowe's optional solution was to order a completely new range (which is out of stock now and not expected til after the new year). They OBVIOUSLY robbed Peter to pay Paul. During this whole process, I have spent 2 hours with my Lowe's designer selecting appliances that were "in stock" and endless hours on the phone reporting delivery damages, missing appliances, and trying to rectify errors.

I have workmans comp on my homeowners insurance due to having nannies when the kids were young.I had to search for it, it wasn't easy to find. So there is a small chance that your HO insurance would cover it.

Workers comp covers your employees, not independent contractors. Your cabinet maker and all other contractors are not your employees, hense the WC policy would not respond in the event of a suit. Your liability policy would respond, and they in turn would go after the contractors WC.

Your homeowners policy typically covers incidental WC for occasional babysitters or other in home occasional workers.
