still pulling my hair over backsplash... Help please!
Comments (18)Thank you for all your comments. :) Boxer, we had the backsplash included in the contract with our contractor so we sort of have to do it together... If we were more experienced with remodeling, we would not have done it the way we set it up but... oh, well... Leslie and jdcl, I like your suggestions. I have been actually looking at either taupe tiles and gray tiles. There ARE so may shades of these tiles that actually have been rather confusing for me but your mentioning these olors sort of assures me! Cinlyklein... now... what is a kitchen shrine? Maybe something that I should do a search for? pdxkit, We paid $3315 for what came out to be 67 sqft of the area. The island is about 52" x 36" (39" x 24" cabinet and 12" overhang on two sides). I have replied to your email about the price detail on our granite, too. Hope that helps!...See MoreVolga blue granite still can't decide on flooring and backsplash.
Comments (2)Well, I too have a seriously gorgeous granite going into our guest bath (labradorite blue - it's a remnant I found at a fabricator : )), and I've had a devil of a time finding anything to go above it. Mostly I've decided I want an etched glass, with as few groutlines as possible (may do a big piece of etched glass from a glass fabricator) so as not to have anything reflecting into the granite. Pics I see online of your volga blue with various backsplashes show that the differences in color really reflect back onto the granite, looking a bit spotty to me. So I'd suggest looking into a plate glass, if possible. Simple, modern, non-competing....See MoreStill need help choosing backsplash tile
Comments (16)ktj, I finally got a sample of the cameo today. I didn't really like it in the store and I liked it even less at home. For some reason they put more of the color "gunk" on it than they do with the Britton. If it had a lot less of the added color, it might not be so bad. The thing I really can't figure out is why in the store display--hanging vertically--the Britton bone has a much warmer tone to it and looks like it would go perfectly. But when you pick up a sample and look at it horizontally--or at my home in natural light--it has a very stark white/gray look. It's better than the Cameo but I need something with a bit of warmth....See MoreStill not happy with my backsplash- $2K to redo :0
Comments (18)Price varies a lot based on location -- but also the materials you chose. I also wonder if he is factoring new tile into his estimate. If so, I think that is a reasonable, perhaps modest cost. If not, it may be a little high to about what I would expect. The demo doesn't take much time and is probably a small component of the total price. The wall prep would presumably be done on the same day as the demo. Depending on how much damage there is to the wall, it may have to dry and have a second day with some prep and more drying time. The installation would be a third day. Mine was grouted the same day, but that could be a fourth trip. If the contractor isn't working another job in the area, then The main tile looks fine on my monitor, but I don't love the large inset of mosaic -- probably wouldn't be my thing in any color or material. I tend to like smaller accents of multi-colored mosaics or mosaics with less variation so that the effect is more textural than changing color and pattern. That's just a personal preference, and I don't know if that is what you aren't happy with or if it is more than that. Is there a reason the frame around the inset looks darker than the field tile? Changing just the inset to a different pattern of the same tile, if you have or can get that tile to match, would be one option, but it might not be a significant savings. Trying to remove only some of the tile is more difficult that taking it all down, and then getting a good wall prep behind it and inside a frame would be more difficult. More difficult means more time, more risk of things not going smoothly and more money. So it might be just as well to do all or nothing if the main tile is not something you love. It is hard to tell what is going on with lighting in your kitchen, and lighting has a big impact on color. One photo looks a bit golden, another a bit rosy. The under cabinet lighting is creating a contrast between the tile there and the unlit area under your hood. And all the artificial light sources (including undercounter, overhead, natural and flash, if used) show up differently in photos (our eyes will auto color balance so whites look white, etc. unless it is extreme). I second the rec to look at your lighting and see if that might correct or improve the look beffore you spend $2K on anything....See MoreJoseph Corlett, LLC
