Subway tile - is it just called subway tile?
Comments (20)lol, bill - i'm in fairfield county($$$$) Best I can do on Daltile is $2.80 at a place with "outlet" in the name or $2.88 at expo in westchester ( their daltile prices are the same as the hd in norwalk, i think) i'm going to buy from the tile store very nearby where i got my floor tile - the one with adex for $4 something. i'm willing to pay for the "intangibles":convenient, lots of samples in stock to take home (not sure i'll go with white), can get in a couple of days if not in-stock, and they really helped me pick the right floor tile and grout color. owner saved me some money by talking me out of buying what she thought was too much tile...and she was right. :)...See MoreFYI-handmade tile clearance at meredith

Comments (35)kgolby, sorry I didn't mean to lump you in with the other comment, I realized they were separate. mpagmom, I was probably over reacting being sick and exhausted... and having just recently spend hours deciding to go with tile instead of beadboard after finding the affordable 23 cents/tile ($1.80/sq ft) HD and Lowes tile, I was a bit dismayed to hear it called horrible! I am sure it would not work out for every kitchen - the HD tile has a definite warm tone to it, while the Lowes product at the same price point is a purer white. With these 2 choices, probably one or the other would work for most kitchens. If your backsplash area is large like mine, the difference between $1.80 and $10/sq ft is $100 vs $500, which is the entire budget for my kitchen facelift! Comments (43)Beverly raises a good point. And it made me chuckle. We all bring our past experience and influences to the table which lead to all kinds of unexpected connotations. Recently I saw a young couple choosing a quartz counter with lots of marbleized, swirly movement. They thought it looked current, hip and modern. To me it looked exactly like my Grandmother's linoleum (real linoleum not vinyl - that wasn't available when my grandmother did her kitchen). The linoleum was on both the floor and the counter top (complete with a metal edge). I'm sure it was very swanky back in the day. Here's an example from Cambria similar to what the couple picked out: Some people Oooo and Ahhhh . . . I think: That's my grandmother's swirly linoleum! But she turned out the best lemon meringue pie ever in that humble little kitchen of hers....See Moreellendi
