I don't know the logistics of the plumbing, but have you thought about a pot filler?

mimsy...anything can be done for money. The cost of which will depend on where your pipes run (I'm on a slab so more $$ but still very doable).

When you know whether or not you're doing this; post a layout and we'll better be able to help you. I have a MAC, and found drawing it out in powerpoint to be the easiest/FREE option. That, of a hand drawn layout with dimensions of the space and surrounding space is more then adequate.

Originally I thought of a pot filler. However, I would still have to carry the pot over to new sink location to empty it. We have basement. Guess I need to get down there with contractor.

Thanks about Power Point. Actually I never bought iWorks. But am considering buying either Mac Power Book or iPad very soon, and hear pages is also pretty good for documents. I've had microsoft word for mac.

The important thing for a drain is a fall line. I think water can be routed pretty much everywhere, so the pot filler is a good suggestion.

You can see Erikanh's prep sink by induction cooktop in this old thread. To a certain extent it depends on the kind of stove you have, and how it's installed. I would think you'd want a little more distance to a freestanding range, so splashes couldn't run down the sides, for instance. There might also be something in your local code specifying how far the plumbing should be from the electrical box, but it won't be far. Think garbage disposer or dishwasher. :)

If you post your existing plan sooner than later, you can get help finding good layouts. It's worth asking.

How much water do you actually haul around? Are you a canner or do you boil a lot of pasta? Those are my two biggest generators of pots of hot water. I also put custard casserole into a pan of water in oven and I put a pressure cooker under a stream of cold water to cool it down. None of these would be any easier with a little sink nearby because the sink wouldn't give me control and safety.

Nice to have water and drain close at hand when canning but you can't control the hot water if you're pouring it into a small target (at the very least I'd have to let it cool down before pouring it into sink, or I'd ladle it in. Similarly, if you make pasta frequently, will you simply be avoiding the walk to another sink to strain it into a colander which has to be immediately carried to another area anyway? You will still need to lift the hot pan of liquid and again, you will be aiming into a small area with an armful of hot liquid to control in splash.

Erickanh's small sink is interesting--best of this kind of thing that I've seen, in part because the faucet cranks back against the wall so it's out of the way. Would love to know how this installation is faring in real life. Is there a temptation to put dirty items into sink and to make it act as a second cleanup sink?

Would you rather have area adjacent to range be plunk space? I know how I cook and I'd miss the plunk space.

Powerpoint is far from free unless you use Office. You could use the iwork demo you probably have (if you haven't already exceeded your 30 days, but be sure to make PDFs so you'll still have access to them when the demo expires).

Sketchup is free, but hard, and there are several other mac programs available through the app store and other places, but I can't comment on them.

BTW, if you do use iwork, I myself find pages easier than Keynote (powerpoint equivalent) for this.

The Powerpoint came loaded on my MAC. I had trouble with Sketchup; finding it too hard to conquer.

regarding the critique about using the sink -- some of your points are ones I am wondering about. I have found that in these last few years I am not as strong as I used to be. I don't do any canning. I probably do make a lot of pasta. I was thinking that being able to run water into pot right at stove would be handy. But I agree, I am not sure how effective it would be to pour a big pot of steaming hot water into a small sink. Not that it's easy in the sink I have now. I think because I have been short on clear counter space, I tend to plunk my pots back on the cook top. If I had to plunk, I have the other side to put stuff on. These are just the first thoughts off the top of my head. I am going to want to keep my costs down, so I know I can't dream big. But when I make pasta, I usually plate the pasta right on the counter next to the cooktop. To me that would be keeping everything all in one spot.

Oh Lordy, I have always felt my lack of genuine flexibility with technology has been such a shame. I do have power point with M. Office. Obviously I never use it. THis is embarrassing, but I am not sure how I would go about getting drawings onto it. I mentioned iWorks because I never bought that, but was impressed with what I saw of it the other day when looking at new computers.

Re dumping steaming pots--wait for them to cool. Get a pasta insert so that you can just lift the basket and leave the hot water on the stove.

Re lifting things, if you're feeling less strong, that's when you need to lift more. Keeping your upper body strength is important for your good health. Slinging pots of water around is more fun than working with free weights. :)

Here's my G-shaped kitchen 12 x 16 with prep sink on peninsula and cleanup sink on the window wall across from it. Both simple cast iron sinks with affordable faucets. We spent minimal money on the Kohler "Mayfield" fullsized prep sink but gained tremendous utility from it. Cute is meaningless for a sink in our world--we needed a workhorse second sink. Refrig and second cabinet wall are on photographer's right. The plunk spaces either side of the range and sinks work well. We had a number of parties recently and DH proudly commented to me as to how wondefully utilitarian our layout design has proved to be.

Very, very nice kitchen. I finally found a floor plan my mother did for me a long time ago. I think I will be able to get this up here by tomorrow. I am stealing a lot of time away from my life to be getting on here at all.

I will not have room for island or peninsula. In the end, I am very pragmatic with certain aesthetics that I usually cannot afford.
