What do you keep near the prep sink?
Comments (20)The compost drawer is just a drawer that I put a stainless lidded bin into. Called a "hotel tray" or "steam table tray", you know, like you see in a buffet. The 1/4 table size fit nicely. I will look up the vender, some commercial kitchen supply place, if anyone is interested. I empty the bin every few days or if I smell it. If I'm busy and it needs to go, I just put it outside on the step toward the compost until I have a minute to empty and rinse it. I have a second tray and can rotate them, but mostly I use just the one, wash it and put it back. We go through a lot of vegetables... no fruit flies. The drawer stays closed unless I am peeling or sweeping scraps into it. It is shorter lengthwise than than the drawer (a salad dressing bottle makes a good wedge at the back) and the rim sits higher then the drawer sides, so it is easy to lift out. A black and tan is Guinness floated over a lighter lager. You need a bent backwards spoon to get the pour right. This thread got me thinking I'll need to dig out that spoon again for St. Patricks Day in a couple weeks....See Morepot fillers and prep sinks..do you really use them?
Comments (16)We have a Prep Sink and use it all the time. In our old kitchen, it wasn't the 2-cook issue at the sink, it was the 1-cook + 1-cleanup person that caused the bottlenecks! That and it seemed the sink was full of dirty dishes every time I needed the sink! In my new/current kitchen, the prep sink is in the corner of the peninsula, is on the same counter run as the cooktop, and is next to the MW and refrigerator. This makes it ideal for prepping as well as accessing it from the DR. I use it for prep the majority of the time. No, there is no disposal on it and while I wish there were, it hasn't stopped me from using it! (The only time it's a pain is when I'm peeling a large # of potatoes...but then I just use the main sink for that task.) Our main/cleanup sink is across a 6.5' aisle opposite the cooktop. It's primary use is to collect dirty dishes & be used for cleanup in general. It can also be used as an extra sink during prepping & cooking if needed...and when I had sixteen 13-yo Girl Scouts cooking in my kitchen one evening it sure came in handy! One of the best things our new layout gave us was separate zones for prepping, cooking, and cleaning up. Without a prep sink it would not have worked nearly as well....See MoreCan you do backplash just behind stove/sink?
Comments (11)I'm planning to do a backsplash only behind my stove. My sink is on a different wall and that wall will have a full backsplash. Plan is the operative word here though, it might change when the time comes to actually start the work. I started a folder for friends and family to help me with idea's which I posted a link to , look at the last picture. The counter is a bit cluttered but look past all that. Notice though that the homeowner put a framed photo up against the wall to the right of the stove. I like it and plan to do the same in my kitchen (not the framed photo), I want a painted wall because the backsplash is big and I feel more tile will just be competing with it? Here is a link that might be useful: backsplash only behind stove...See MoreFridge-Stove-Sink or Fridge-Sink-Stove?
Comments (15)This is actually a very good layout! Kitchen workflow: refrigerator --> prep sink --> prepping --> range --> table (or cleanup sink) The Cleanup Zone is separated from the Prep and Cooking Zones, the Cooking Zone is protected from traffic, there's no zone-crossing while prepping/cooking, and there appears to be ample workspace for each work zone. One question - what is that block to the right of the island? If that's a wall or something else, then you don't have enough aisle space b/w the island and that wall. You don't need two trash pullouts. Set up your island as follows (top-to-bottom or left-to-right): 18" trash pullout + 18" sink + whatever space you have left over for cabinets (hopefully, at least 36") This places the trash pullout in the Prep Zone (where it's used most), near to the Cooking Zone (where it's used 2nd most), and near the Cleanup Zone (where it's used least of the three primary work zones). If you have the room on the island, then opt for a 21" or 24" sink base for your prep sink. The interior dimensions of a sink are usually 1" to 3" narrower than the sink base cabinet. We have a prep sink that's 17-3/4" square and I use it all the time! It's a good size for just about anything. Is it big enough for all tasks, no, but that's when I use the cleanup sink - it's rare that I use the cleanup sink for prepping, though. If the island is supposed to have seating, then be sure it's at least 41.5" deep to accommodate: 1.5" counter overhang + 24" deep cabinets + 1" decorative door/end panel + 15" clear knee/leg space for the seating overhang....See Moreblfenton
