RemodelFla - that might have been me. But I'm in So Cali - so perhaps when we are ready I could entice FL Joshua and his family to visit Disneyland! They could stay with us. Of course, you all have Disney World - so I'm not sure how big of a draw that would be. :-)

For those of you who have had Joshua redo your counters after they have been installed, can you tell me what is involved? I am wondering if appliances have to be moved, etc. I also have a cabinet that is sitting on the countertop and I am trying to visualize how this would be done. Thanks for any input.

After I read my post, I realized that it sounded like I was referring to countertop appliances rather than what I meant. Some of you are probably still laughing wondering how I was going to refinish my counters with the appliances still on them. Anyway just wanted to clarify. Thanks.

Just clear off your counters. His sander bags the dust so no real mess. Don't move appliances.

Just got the emails, thanks. Yep no need to move anything. Just clear everything off the counters and you will be fine. Most you will need to do is a good cleaning after everything is done. I'd love if others who have had me do their counters chimed in. I think it's best to hear from people who know the difference.

Thanks Florida Joshua. I did leave an email for you and will wait to hear from you. Is it true that the face of the soapstone is not actually sanded prior to the installation but just polished by a diamond polisher. I am really trying to decide if mine was done correctly or not. Thanks so much.

Now that the holidays are over, is there anyone else interested or anyone who would like to share their experience?

I'm fortunate that FL Joshua is only 30 miles away, and he installed my beautiful soapstone. We haven't moved in yet, but I dropped a knob on my new counter and created my first patina mark, but when FL Joshua returned to complete my laundry room, he fixed it.. and now it is nowhere to be found!

Our soapstone counters suffered from dreadful white water marks/rings whenever they were oiled. They really looked a mess. Also, they would cause the dishcloth to leave little bits of cloth on the surface after they were wiped down. You couldn't see them but you could feel them. Felt like the counters were covered in crumbs. Weird. Joshua came up and refinished them and we haven't had a problem since. They difference in appearance and texture was remarkable. I highly recommend him to anyone who is unhappy with their soapstone.

FL Joshua- Any chance you might EVER come west?? WA state is beautiful in the summer (no humidity to speak of east of the Cascades . . .)

Florida Joshua...how do you feel about Alaska? It's best to come when there's almost 30 feet of snow on the ground which is NOW! :) Oh, OK...summer is good, too. :)

I know this thread is from awhile back, and I saw the new thread regarding the "NE tour" (so bummed i didn't know about it until now), but i was hoping i'd be able to contact you this way and ask you how your ss is behaving now, after florida joshua worked on them? I initially heard about your ss on bayareafrancy's patina galore thread. I was one of the ones having the same issues as you -- oily spots that wouldn't get clean, shredded paper towels, sawtooth marks, etc.

I ended up hand sanding mine, which improved the paper towel shredding issue and slightly improved the oily spotting issue, but then i also had resigned myself to being unhappy about my ss. It's been many years since install, and has patina'd ok, but i never felt like my ss was ever completely right. I started searching thru gw again to see if there were any new answers and to decide whether i should finally remove my ss.

Sorry this is a little long, but i would love to know how your ss is afterflorida joshua worked his magic and whether you are happy with it in the end. If you wouldn't mind telling me approx how much it costs to refinish a kitchen full of ss, that would really help as well. If it is over 1-2k, i might as well just remove the darned thing and put the money towards new countertops.... If it was "reasonable" and you are happy with the end product, i am going to wait for florida joshua's next trip!
