Do your white/cream cabinets match trim?

We're poised to paint our cabinets an off-white creamy color, but I'm worried that it will clash with my white interior doors and trimwork. I don't think my husband will go for painting the doors and trimwork. If he does it in the kitchen, he will feel compelled to change the trim color in the whole house. He will not like that idea at all.

Some whites and creams go beautifully together. Some combinations just look dirty and muddy - this I know from a disappointing experience in my bedroom!

Our kitchen cabs are creamy, and we painted the whole room, except the ceiling to match, including doors in the room, trim, walls, windows and had blinds made to match.

Like you, I was worried about the rest of the house trim and doors, which is white. But it's absolutely no problem at all. It doesn't look weird, liked I feared it might. Maybe it's because the whole room is basically the same colour.

Hi Traditional girl,
My cabinets are a creamy white, my walls are a tiny bit deeper than the cabinets and my crown molding is white. My granite is cream colors called Vintage, looks like Delicatus somewhat. All the colors blend and it is a monochromatic palette which I wanted. I have the crown molding, baseboards and pantry doors which are white as well. My floors are a dark walnut and I like that contrast. Whites, cream, beige can all work together if their undertones don't fight.

I have a basically all white bathroom: white Hydro Systems tub, white ("cotton") Toto toilet, white Daltile Navelli Carrera Star tile, white Ralph Lauren ("grand") paint, white Restoration Hardware Hutton vanity with white/gray carrera marble. The whites are all similar, but differ slightly. The fixtures are slightly whiter than the tile, which is slightly whiter than the wall color, etc. Personally, I started with the white tile and worked from there. I went with white fixtures without comparing the colors, but then checked the color of the vanity, the marble, the wall color, etc. I think layering whites or whites and creams can look beautiful (even sophisticated). Can you get a sample of the cream vanity and take it to a plumbing show room to get an idea of how the colors will differ? Can you add other touches of cream to the room with paint, tile (or accent tile), or linens? From your description, it sounds like you have a good mixture of crisp white (fixtures maybe? wainscoting) and warmer tones (tan or beige tiles, wall color). I suspect that because you have a mixture and not just a single element of warm or cool tones, it will look great. You could also search online or use sites like Houzz.com to try to find similar color combinations to see if you like them.

My crown matches the white wall cabinets, but I have a cherry island and a hutch as well as a wall of blue cabinets. We put the white crown there too. The reason we kept it all white was to match the kitchen trim to the adjoining breakfast and family rooms. So we have some that is different on the blue wall, but we kept the trim the same ass the rest of the house. Probably doesn't help you much. How separate is your kitchen? Is there a clear dividing line to make a change from white to stained if you paint it?

Thanks everybody for your input. The shaker cabinets are new -- so that's why I hesitate to paint them. True, the lighting in the kitchen isn't that great -- so perhaps it would be difficult for people to notice the difference. I would love, however, to change the hardware. Currently they are the tubular pulls which seem too contemporary for this pre-war apartment. I know I may have to paint the cabinets depending on the new hardware I select. If I can fill in the holes with wood filler and have it paint so it would be seamless, I'd leave it as it is. But not sure if that will happen. If I end up having to paint the cabinets, I figure might as well paint them the same color as the trim/moldings. Decorators White looks good in all of the rooms (with the exception of the master bedroom where colors are more muted) because the furniture tends to run on the fresh clean side.

Things feel dated when they were done by everybody without regard to their space, just because everyone was doing them. If you love creams, always loved creams, and the house you build will look great with them, given its location, style, your concept, light it gets, etc-no, won't look dated. Colors by themselves can't be "dated". They're too independent of us:) Only our impressions of combinations of them, our perceptions etc, that are usually very personal, can make them feel dated. So, to summarize.. No:) Use whatever you love and whatever your house will like most.

My trim colors are differnt all over the house - but that was normal in an old house, no one worried about having them all the same.

In the kitchen, they will match the cabinets -light cream (after I get everything painted). The bathroom is a white - white and the bedroom is more of a light gold/white.

The problem is that both bathroom and bedroom share a door with the kitchen - you end up with two different colors on a door - when it is closed, everything is fine, but when you open it, the wrong color is showing inside the room. . .

I do not think the creamy cabinet paint
will clash with white trim you have in your home.

Traditionalgirl, Our beach cottage tiny galley kitchen has cream cabinets, BM White Dove walls, back splash is white tile and range is white. It is monochromatic to make the the space look larger and to blend into the open living space that is also painted BM White Dove - walls and ceilings.
