Narrowing down granite choices - pictures

This is a follow-up to a post from last month, after I made my first trip to the granite yard. I've since been to a different fabricator, and then back to the first one again. Here are the final choices, folks . . .

I believe this one is a Typhoon Bordeaux:

This is a gold and silver:

Also a Typhoon Bordeaux:

This is either Colonial Gold or Tiger Taupe:

Ivory Brown:

Blanco Romano (this doesn't look as "washed out" in person):

Golden Beach:

Delicatus:

Here is the current space - I'm replacing the floor (probably with a neutral porcelain or travertine tile) and the appliances with stainless, and I'll add a backsplash:

I looked at very similar granites (so I must like them- though I ended up with a totally different one- sapphire blue)--- and my vote is for either the first typhoon bordeau or the golden beach. I think I prefer the golden beach .....

I vote for Colonial Gold/Tiger Taupe or Golden Beach - similar to what I'm looking for so I will look for these when its time to select my granite!

Just in case anyone checks back I think I found what I love the most. A really nice girl at United Tile helped me out so much. I almost gave up going there because I never got much help. Anyhow, she let me take home sample boards that have been grouted. I can't believe how much this has helped my decision. My mom and dad came over, bless them as they came over ASAP, and right when they walked in they said "that's the one" pointing to the Walker Zanger polished calacatta. They said it just does so much for the kitchen and I totally agree. The 4x12 samples I have are honed which I thought I liked but much prefer the polished as it adds some warmth. I almost threw out the idea of marble. Thank goodness I had a free day to drive to this store! And the girl said if I know a contractor I'll get contractor's price-my brother is a contractor! Yeh! In these picks you will see beveled subway (my 2nd choice), thassos marble (a little too plain), glass subway (way to contemporary now that I see it grouted and too much shine), and the calacatta is the one with the most veining. We only looked at 3cm; the 2cm seemed too delicate although alot of beautiful colors came in the thinner version. We went with 3cm and it is absolutely solid; I'd go with your husbands recommendation of 3cm on this one. Of your photos, we both like the Desert Dream first and the Saturnia second. We don't like the Copper Canyon or Juperana Columbo at all; too much orange (will look even more orange under incandescent light). We too chose an exotic stone and absolutely LOVE it; would not change it at all; would gladly have paid double to get it (yes, we paid thru the nose for what we got!!) and it was well worth it; NO REGRETS. Every day we find a new section to look at or say to each other, 'Hey, did you see this gorgeous splotch of color here?!" or 'Hey, isn't this just BEAUTIFUL?!!' Ours too had mesh on the back. Our fabricator told us this is for preventing damage during shipping & fabrication; they left the mesh on the backside except where your fingers touch underneath on the exposed areas. Ours was dug up in Brazil, then sent to Italy for processing and finally came to the states; that's alot of moving around. We did not spend extra money on a fancy edge; rather, put all the money into the stone. Our stone is so beautiful it would have detracted from it so we just got a plain edge. Ditto Fori verbatim on the cabinet decision! I can barely see the difference between them, and if one will save you $800, go with that one. My kitchen has a 45-degree angled wall just like yours does, and I have frameless cabinets as well. In the entire kitchen, I only have fillers in the corners of the 45-degree angle space, and by the dishwasher drawers because we needed to fill up that space. The fillers by the 45-degree angle are about 2-3". Part of that is because they needed to be sure the drawers/cabinet would clear eachother, and part is because our cabinets were not custom and we had to conform to the 3" increment restraint. The fillers were no bigger than what we would have needed if we chose framed cabinets with full overlay doors. Far and away, we gained MUCH more space by using frameless cabinets than we lost to fillers- especially because almost all of our base cabinets are drawers.

patty Congrats on your remodel I guess I would ask what other elements are in the room? what color appliances, hardware, stools, furnishings, natural light, window treatments,rugs, wall color, lighting etc I can't see the flooring - posting a pic may help Picking a counter is very individual & we all "see" differently You noted a natural tumbled backsplash as likely - I read the TB - as warming up your palette - your cabs are considered cool - so I my initial reaction is I prefer that - I like warm/cool elements but again depends on the rest of the palette & your personal taste The NC reads cool to me - If that is used the rest of the elements should be cool - fabrics, hardware, wall color etc - or you will have colors that are fighting each other - a honed crema marfil backsplash wouldn't work, but a carrara would - tan/beige paints wouldn't work, but blues/greys would Another twist you could consider is having each sample honed & see if that helps to make a decision - that will give you 4 options and also sounds like you have some room to negotiate with the stone yard esp on the TB they want to move - offer 20% discounted pricing on that one if that is the one you would like, even if not, that may help to drive the decision Good luck

I like the Tiger Taupe - I prefer a more consistent looking stone, especially for counters versus a island top. I think the color range of the granites you are considering is great!

I like the Golden Beach. I have similar cabinet color and granite. Love it. I thought picking the granite was a lot easier than a backsplash (which is why I still have paint).

I prefer the Typhoon Bordeaux. I have Golden Beach and am replacing it. Way too busy for me.

I'll just echo redroze. The first Typhoon Bordeaux. Gorgeous - perfect! None of the others come close (for me).

With the color of your cabinets I'd vote for the first typhoon bordeaux. Love it. I think many of your choices would go well in the kitchen that I'm planning, so I appreciate the virtual trip to the granite yard!

I also like either Typhoon. The Colonial Gold is nice too. They both look great with your cabinet door.

I really like the first typhoon bordeau and the golden beach, but if I had to pick just one, it'd be typhoon bordeau. I came close to picking that stone for my own kitchen, but they were definitely darker and a bit more swirly that what you showed. The variation in one "name" of stone is amazing!

I like the Blanco Romano or the Gold and Silver.. the golden beach has too much yellow in it for my taste (and, is terribly similar to 1000's of other kitchens from what I can tell). I like the freshness of the Blanco Romano or the Gold and Silver.. they will provide an overall lighter, more "up" feeling while the darker/yellower stones will give you a "warmer" feeling.

But either way, figure out which will meet your durabilty/stain resistancy needs.

my vote is typhoon bordeaux, loved the third picture (2nd slab of TB), but the first is also gorgeous with your cabs. It's light, but warm

Delicatus or Golden Beach. I think the tones work best with your cab selection.

It is so hard to catch all the nuances and the real beauty of granite in a photo, but you did a good job.

I like the first Typhoon Bordeaux the best (the second one, second). I find the Golden Beach too busy, but of course it's up to you. Since it seems like your kitchen is made up of several small sections of counter, you may want a granite with some consistency, so that it actually looks like the same granite throughout.

My #1 vote is for the first picture of Typhoon Bordeaux. My #2 vote is for Golden Beach.

Golden beach, for sure. Your kitchen is going to be gorgeous no matter what you pick, though!

Thanks, everyone, for your feedback!

I was supposed to receive a quote earlier this week after my contractor sent over his drawing to the fabricator. But, no estimate yet. I think there's a bit of a holiday slowdown going on.

I'll keep you "posted!"

I love typhoon bordeaux and may actually race to the granite warehouse tomorrow to see if I can see it firsthand myself! I've been sold on marble, but I'm reconsidering b/c of the impracticality of it. I think this typhoon bordeaux is warm, rich and absolutely gorgeous with your cabinets! let us know what you choose!
