3/16' white silicon on the cabinet under countertop? Hideous?

I have posted a question regarding the island overhang support. I have been brain-storming with my contractor and a local steel fabricator. The stone fabricator people have been - "get whatever.."

One suggestion was to get 3/16" thick plate (not sure what width but it comes something less than 2") and screw onto the cabinet and to cover the gap between the stone and the cabinet top created by the thickness of plate with white silicon.

I have a white cabinet. And the thickness of 3/16" does not look that thick. I am sure that on 12" overhang side, I won't see it but I am just concerned about on the short overhang side (1.5" from the cabinet frame/~3/4" from the drawer front).

Does anyone have used white silicone to fill the gap between the overhang support and the cabinet top underneath?

Another thing is the stone people mentioned 1/4" support. If I were to go with 3/16" will I be compromising the strength too much?

They want to do what?! Who are these people and what is their experience? There was another thread about a week ago regarding overhang supports that discussed legs, corbels and a couple of different approaches to steel reinforcing bars. One style seems to be for 2cm granite and the other for 3cm. In no case does a steel reinforcing bar lift the granite off the cabinet or plywood base necessitating something to cover the gap. A router is used to set the bars either into a plywood sheet base or into the cabinet tops themselves. There are pictures of both styles in the link below. That your guys would even suggest such a thing would give me pause - long pause.

You're dealing with inexperienced idiots. Move on. Is there no one in your town that does high end renovations? Yes you pay more for their experience. You'll end up paying a lot more than that in errors and mistakes otherwise.

I just had to post here...OMG...the lady that wrote Laminate and luxurious in the same sentence.."NO". I hope I never have to meet someone like you in my lifetime. What a bunch of snobby, snarky..people! I am sorry..I think you can have a beautiful, luxurious kitchen without paying for granite, quartz, soapstone...etc. My goodness. I am building a house now and get to hear from our subs about all of the snooty women that they have to deal with...literally walking out of a house because the closets aren't big enough... What kind of country have we become? I say..if you want to buy high end appliances...beautiful cabinets..and put it all in a laminate kitchen. I think it can be stunning! Don't listen to all of these snooty fruities.....do what YOU want..and the people that matter...won't walk into your kitchen and take a mental note of your laminate..I would think it was beautiful! And for those of you who think that I must be some low life...my husband is a doctor! There....rant over! :-)

We have had almost the exact same issue with our corian. The builder wouldn't even come to check it only went by the pictures we sent. Then blamed it all on something "very hot" had to do that! I can tell you now, it did not. There is also a large dip or warp over the dishwasher. When we pulled it out there is absolutely no heat barrier or insulation to protect the corian. The installer also never sealed the sink basin. Which we found out the hard way when our sink overflowed. The installer/builder takes no blame Won't even come to look or tell us what we can do. There is a ten year warranty on the corian, we've been fighting this for over two years now. The ten year warranty will be up in September of this year. What can we do???

ksc36/Joseph Corbett, LLC: I read the instructions and if you read it carefully, the wood block method is an alternative to use only if the clips are too long for the application ; in other words, if the clips would extend past, and sit on the cabinet side walls and keep the counter top from sitting on the cabinets. I don't think this would normally be an issue when installing a 30" sink into a 36" cabinet - both typical, standard sizes. I don't read it as an alternative technique to be used at the discretion of the installer in place of the specified technique using the Blanco instructions and hardware. In my opinion (which I have developed during my ordeal), installers will almost always use wood and screws instead of anchors and hardware because it is simply faster and easier with less chance of making a mistake - plus there's no immediate downside. The customer, unless he is watching closely and knows what he is looking at, will never know what the installer did .................until possibly months or years later. On the other hand, using the anchors requires that the counter top be turned over (bottom up) which would probably require a third installer. The installers that did my counter tops consisted of 1 installer and 1 helper - they were in my house about 2 hours. They said that they had 4 counter top installations to do and they had to be done that day. I don't know how these guys are paid but I suspect that they are paid by the job and the number of jobs they sign up for or are assigned - speed is definitely a factor in their pay. Incidentally, the men that did my installation were also upset at the mistakes in the manufacturing of my counter top requiring them to make field adjustments which ultimately resulted in my counter top not being flat and the "lippage". I tried to get their names so that I could subpoena them to small claims court but M.R.Stone, LLC would not provide their contact information.

I have a question for you guys. Is it too outdated to have a cointibayoon do the quartz for the badksplash(only the 4inches) without having to add any other back splash? I worry about making my kitchen Look too busy and having a hard time matching colors , so i was hoping to just install a quartz counter top with that extra 4 inch lip without doing any other backsplash . That is assuming my counter top isn’t too bland . Also, can I get away with a gray? What about the Silestone calacatta gold ? Are the speckled quartz outdated ? Thanks! My floor has to be changed because it’s got a lot of holes and pkaces that are showing the underneath black rubber. it also has stains . My dream is to have white cabinets , a Taupe counter top(warmer gray like), and wood floors . If calacatta gold form Silestone , Bianco drift from Caesarstone , cambria Torquay , or viatera “sol” would work with white or warm cabinets , I’d pick one of those maybe. It’s a small kitchen, and I don’t have a huge budget .. but I do want to make a big enough change beginning with the counter tops that were never sealed properly, flooring, (and our back wall behind the sink that needs to be replaced ) . I hate to say it, but your guys are amateurs if they don't know how to deal with countertop overhangs... Your granite fabricator should know all about this -- did you ask them?

Thank you so much for your comments. I don't know what I would do without this forum. I don't know anything about remodel - that's probably how I ended up deciding to do it to begin with.

Arghh!!! I am pulling my hair out over this. They said that "people do this ALL the time!"

I do admit that they don't seem to be experienced. My stone guys don't seem to help much either. The templator said, "well we can do that but whether you will like the look of it, we can't guarantee." Well, everyone seems to be just done with their part and get paid.

When I mentioned the overhang support issue to the cabinet people (or the IKEA cabinet doing people) they were saying that routing the plywood to the those steel plates will take too long and hinted that it will cost extra. Personally, I am not sure if they have the ability to make grooves into the plywood just right to get that done. I dare not let them make any more cuts into the IKea cabinet base to fit those supports notched into the cabinet. They have been making enough dents and scratches on my cabinet enough already.

So I guess I really have to get the plywood - maybe 3/4" thick and have the steel bars/plates notched in there if I don't want to do make any cuts into the cabinet?
