Aisle width/clearance around an island
Comments (5)Sorry about the terrible image. I'm trying to upload a better version, but its a pdf file and GW won't let me attach pdfs so I had to scan it instead and that was the best I could do. I need someone more adept at the Apple computer to help me. So frustrated! Anyway what is the minimum distance that you would do between any island and perimeter countertop?...See MorePlease post pictures of your narrow island and work aisles
Comments (29)I want to caution all of those who think narrow aisles are OK for a multi-cook kitchen. If you plan your kitchen very, very, very carefully you can probably pull it off. However, if you're not very careful you will end up with a kitchen like Rookie_2010's MIL's kitchen or my SIL's kitchen...very difficult for more than one person to work in...and/or your narrow island becoming a "barrier island" (both of which my SIL has b/c she just had to have an island in a kitchen that couldn't support it...she has grown to hate it over time...especially as her children have grown). If you will have more than one person working in your kitchen at a time on a semi-regular basis, regardless of what they are doing, think long and hard b/f you deliberately plan for a narrow aisle and/or cram in a narrow island... Our kitchen is 10'6" wide and while I have a "U" shape, the fact that the legs are rather short and the base wide, prevents people from becoming trapped in it. I had a choice of an island or what I have now, and I am very, very glad I was talked out of an island by the wise folks here! If you do decide to plan for narrow aisles, etc., at least go in w/your eyes open and realize that you will have a less-than-optimum space and that you will most likely have to adjust your kitchen use to accommodate those aisles (or island)....See Morewider than 48" aisle between island (with sink) and rangetop
Comments (4)I have 50 inches (counter to counter) between my island with sink and the cooktop wall. I was worried about clearance so I increased it from 48 to 50. Sometimes I wish I had those 2 inches back. I could have made the island bigger. My DH and I are often working in the space at the same time and there is plenty of room for both of us. I love having my dish drawers right across from my sink/dishwasher. I can just turn and unload the dishes into the drawer. There is enough room to get through if the dishwasher is left open or the cabinet drawers are pulled out. This picture shows both things open at the same time....See More42" aisle too narrow for base cabinets with drawers?
Comments (20)I want to add to this old thread (in case someone else comes across it while looking)... I was **freaking** out that my aisles were only going to be 42-44" in my kitchen and my designer assured me it was "great"... she was SOO right. I have 42/43" aisles in my main workspace and it is HUGE. HUGE. In that area I have a big prep sink and a 48" range. I have no idea why someone would want MORE space. It's actually sad I could have had a little more space on the island... I read all these forums and was sure I needed 48"... I just don't get it- the people who wrote these guidelines. My kitchen is large and the whole family is regularly in that work space... Actually if it would have been smaller maybe they would all stay out :) of the cooking space. I am not petite either at 6' but anyhow...my kitchen is beyond roomy with 43" aisles. I hope this helps someone :) edited to add: 43" is referring to my "work" aisles (range, prep sink, MW drawer, and large drawers in island. cleanup sink and DW on peninsula). The main pass aisle to den is 48" and the separated drink station/pantry is 55" from the islands' side....See Moreholligator
