Can I change hinges from exposed to hidden?
Comments (2)Yes you can, you need to figure out how much your door overlaps the sides and you need to be good at drilling to get the Euro type hinges as they require a fairly large hole in the door. Once you figure out what the overlap is look for hinges with an "overlay" that would work for what you need. They come with templates for you to mark where you need to drill, but it takes patience and also some skill as I you don't want to bore too deep. I did this in my old house bathrooms although they already had concealed hinges they were not the Euro kind and some were breaking and I was changing the doors out. I bored the doors first (a drill press is very useful and I created a jig out of a few wood pieces based on the template included with the hinges) and then decided the placement of the hinges inside based on the door location so if I was off a 1/4 inch or so in height on the door bore it wasn't a big deal. The distance from the edge of the door to the bore hole is important though and you don't want to be off there....See MoreIs there a reason for exposed hinges on cabinets?
Comments (4)Yes - it's an aesthetic choice as erikanh mentioned. Most of my cabinets are full overlay with hidden hinges and the soft-close. I designed a hutch for my cabinet maker to make that is supposed to look "old" so it is in a different color (white) and is inset with exposed hinges because I thought that added to it looking old. I love that look on it but as erikanh said, it doesn't have soft-close. I have to make a conscientious effort to close those doors differently. (love that soft-close everywhere else!)...See MoreCabinet hidden hinge question - 3/8'' lipped door
Comments (5)Thanks! I am hoping to find a concealed hinge that will work on a 3/8 in inset.. Long story short.. Lost everything in Harvey.. Kitchen finally being rebuilt and the carpenter built doors that are the 1970's (80s if I'm being generous) I finally get a new kitchen and it's already old. The doors aren't hung yet so I'm making a last ditch effort to find a concealed hinge. Who would have thought a new kitchen could be so depressing? And I hate the semi-concealed with the spring. They seem worse than the exposed. Being a professional, would you know of a hinge that would work? I'd really appreciate your opinion....See MoreExposed hinge finish question
Comments (5)I think the exposed hinges will look most authentic for your kitchen. You have a lot of drawers so it will not be as busy as if it were mostly doors. The countertops are soapstone on the perimeter so I think black would be fine. In essence I feel you are trading a heavily patterned floor in the picture below for a heavily patterned backsplash in your kitchen, so it's a sort of update and reworking of the real thing. Below, the hardware is probably chrome or nickel but I am afraid that might fall a little flat on the yellow cabinets....See Moredianalo
