Is 36 inches too wide for a drawer stack?
Comments (38)Gemcap and Terri_pacnw, the system in the drawers in just called drawer peg organizer. It does have a notch to remove it. Mine is the Rev-a-Shelf brand. It looks nice and keeps everything organized but I found out after the fact that it really isn't necessary if you have good soft close drawers. There have been a number of threads on these organizers which you should be able to find with a google search and the terms gardenweb + dish drawer organizers or peg dividers. Most GWers agree that you can stack dishes in drawers without the pegs and that the pegs actually waste some drawer space. Some posters did say they used some type of liners like cushy cupboards in their pegless drawers. Nothing really moves when I close my soft close drawers. So while the pegs look nice, I say save the cost. I am sure you can find something else to spend that extra money on....See MoreIs 42' too wide for a drawer?
Comments (18)I have a freestanding kitchen lower cabinet unit I purchased while awaiting my remodel that has three 47" drawers in it. I love it so much I'm getting some fatty drawers in my remodel. It has Blum selfclose slides (maybe not the best of Blum since it's an Ikea piece) and I've loaded up the two large drawers with some pretty heavy items. The shallow drawer is a little silly--if I were customizing it, I'd have it broken up into two or three. It has the full front builtin drawer pull so no knob placement concerns (but the 15 month-old has just learned to open the flour/sugar/heavy canister stuff drawer from the side so it slides pretty smoothly). My new drawers will have false double drawer fronts so they don't look so wide. I guess that tells me how many knobs I'll need. My cabinet maker says not to jump in them, but otherwise they should hold up....See MoreWould a 45" wide drawer be too large?
Comments (26)Thanks for asking ProSource Memphis. Here is a link to my whole house plan as well as the kitchen. As for more in the kitchen, mostly DH will be "helping" which is why the prep sink. I did post a while back but can't find it now. So here it is again. First, let's just say I recently celebrated my 30th birthday for the second time. DH is retired. This is for a house in FL where we will entertain, but mostly it's for the two of us. We are very informal and plan on most of our entertaining to be more outdoors or in the great room. No sit down dinners for me. Been there, done that! I cook usually 2x a week although we don't have a barbecue now because we're in a condo. We hope to use the barbecue a lot, and eat out less. I do not have a lot of pots, pans and gadgets. I do like to bake and will do so on average once every two weeks. Right now we are planning on 1 oven with a microwave above, induction cooktop, a farmhouse sink, built in refrigerator, prep sink, DW. We have a dog station garage because DH is awful at putting doggy stuff away bowl, vitamins, treats, etc and will not put in drawer, cabinet etc so this way, I can shove it under the garage and not look at it. Better than fighting with DH. Hence the prep sink where it is so DH can clean out doggy bowl near doggy area (dog eats raw). DH also tends to leave keurig pods and sugar packets on counter; hence the coffee station behind closed doors. That is where all the coffee mugs will go as well as his toaster oven. Additionally DH helps with cutting veggies and cleanup. I do most of the cooking, and the nights I do cook mostly I cook on the cooktop. Dishes will go next to cooktop. Glasses above doggy garage, with the pretty glasses in the glass buffet. Forks, knives etc will go next to sink in drawer above trash pullout. Here is the downstairs plan, but not the exact kitchen layout: House Layout Here is the south wall with the doggy garage and DH coffee station on other side of refrigerator (the empty spot) South Wall And here is the layout of the kitchen area. Sizes of cabinets are on the elevations Kitchen Layout...See MoreLove wide drawers. But when is wide too wide?
Comments (17)The side part of my office desk is 42" so I just took a look at it from afar, and I think it will look great (I'd vote for one shallow top drawer and 3 even-height drawers below). I would definitely do heavy duty glides, especially if you're going to store dishes. We had regular (75 lb) glides in our 36" drawer and one failed. They were replaced with heavy-duty glides and work fine now (although we still keep the large soup bowls in a separate drawer, out of an abundance of caution, plus they're used much less frequently than other dishes)....See MoreUser
