Mod nursery embodying both form and function
Comments (12)spanky/emily's mom/emily's son's grandmom-to-be! You have obviously passed on your talent. I remember your daughter--my sister in Hallarum :) She's done another fabulous job--she should go into design professionally, seriously. (When did they start making gliders that fabulous? Everything cool showed up *just* after we got out of the market for it :)) ...a couple of thoughts: ...she'd better get ready to remove everything from the low shelves or baby will do it for her in about a year and a half:) And make sure the closet rod is *firmly* in place or baby will test it with possibly whacking results. And I also have to say that I hope the crib won't get used that much in there--hope it gets moved into mom and dad's room and opened next to their bed...just putting in a plug for the Family Bed concept...makes middle-of-night feedings/comforting that much easier... Beautiful beautiful work--hope she wins. More important, I hope she has a smooth, safe birthing. Please keep us updated :)...See More1st Time Poster, Please help: Subzero/Wolf vs. Thermador vs. KA vs. ??
Comments (53)Yes! We got it sorred out. So it turned out to be a loose circuit breaker. It was the new sub panel put in for our kitchen reno. We had some electrical work done and hired an electrician tonadd some recessed lighting. He ran it back to the new subpanel and he comes up from the basement nd asks if we were having problems with the stove. I said yes. He said he noticed the breaker wasnt seated properly. It was making a connection but just barely. He popped it out and popped it back in and sure enough I went and ran that oven at 500 for an hour with no issues. The cause imo was the weak current was causing the computer to think there was a fan issue. An anomaly. Want to say we have since moved and it was a relief to be able to have that taken care of. I will buy Thermdor again! They did send us a new range (after repeated service calls). So would so donit again...See MoreWeek 176 - Would you trade functionality for looks?
Comments (32)Reading others' comments, I wonder if we view function in the same way. For instance, I don't see glass fronted cabinets, open shelving or a lack of upper cabinets as choosing form over function. They all serve a functional purpose. Now if those choices were made at the expense of adequate storage overall or adequate storage in the right places, that's another matter. Do they make a little more work - dusting, cleaning glass, etc - for the homeowner? Perhaps. But every surface has its trade offs. Stainless steel counters are impervious but they can be scratched and dented. Marble is great for baking but it can stain, chip and etch. Open shelving gives you a place to display treasured items or make it easier to grab oft used items but you need to dust. I chose to put glass doors and a glass side on my upper next to my window to let me display the silver-plated items I inherited from my mom and my stemware, and to allow light from the window to pass more freely into the room. That's not putting form over function to me. That's about weighing my options to meet my goals and choosing the one that best suits my needs. Kitchen design is all about compromise of one sort or another. I don't see form versus function as a black and white matter but as a continuum....See MoreForm vs Function :)
Comments (28)Respectfully, even with an actual kitchen space and familiar KD such details can still get overlooked, for those of us shorter than average height. Unless your KD is shorter than average height too. Taller people just don't get it because they aren't our height. They just aren't. And by taller I am meaning average. Heh. Most folks think I'm crazy when I tell them that yes, those dang airplane seats are ALSO a horrible atrocity for me, they think it must be fine because my knees aren't hitting the seat in front of me like theirs are. And they are right on that point, but they just don't experience the back issues that comes from ill placed lumbar and arms that are too short to rest comfortably on the arm rests. Go look online for stylish fashionable foot rests for under an office desk and you'll see we shorties have little options. Adjustable height desks? Only go one way-- taller. NOT shorter. Drawer style micros? Considered that but if you already have back problems (due to conforming your too short stature to a too tall world) then leaning over to get stuff out is the last thing you want to do. If you're lucky you have a good physical therapist who's taught you all the yoga poses for any movement requiring bending -- operating a drawer micro would be like the moves you have to make to unload a dishwasher without throwing out your already unhappy cranky back. A back made miserable by sitting in chairs too high at desks too tall and in sofas that are way too deep without piles of pillows -- yet your feet are still dangling regardless. Sorry for my cranky rant, that I am typing while laying flat on my back which is not happy at the moment. And yes, I know it's just as hard for the taller outliers too.... who will have to do even more contorted deeper yoga poises to reach into that micro drawer (that's why the trend has raised ovens up on to the wall, right?)....See Morefouramblues
