Will this hood and backsplash look strange?

I have been inspired by Morton5's kitchen! I love how she brought the fire and ice backsplash all the way up to the top of the cabinets, behind the chimney hood. I am using Thermador appliances for my kitchen. I'd like to have a 48" range and a 48" chimney wall hood (in front of Fire & Ice), however, Thermador doesn't make a chimney wall hood that large. If I used this wall hood (http://www.thermador.com/cooking/ventilation/hpwb48fs-professional-series-48-inch-wall-hood) with the fire and ice backsplash going to the top (ending where the cabinets end at the top), do you think it'll look OK?

Will it look like it's floating without any cabinetry above?

Why don't you get a chimney hood if that's the look you like. You don't have to get all Thermador appliances. Many of us mix brands.

I'm trying to keep my costs down and Thermador is offering a free hood and dishwasher if I buy the range and refrigerator. So I think I'm staying with Thermador.

Do you think it'll look OK?

I can see why it might be advisable to remove the left/rt portions of tile, but I would be inclined to wait until ithe kitchen is completed before deciding. If, as your gut tells you, it "needs" to come down, nothing is really lost except a little more time with it up. Perhaps knowing you are not "locked-in" or committed to it, will help give the perspective to view it more objectively while deciding for sure. This way you will not only have the chance to see it with everything else in place, but you will also have the opportunity to get used to it, before deciding if you truly dislike it, or just haven't gotten used to it being there. As subtle (in color) as our tile is, after months of looking at white painted Sheetrock, it still looked "different" and stood out when we looked at our kitchen. Once we became accustomed to it, we couldn't imagine our walls without it. That's how I am with many things--after living with a blank wall or empty space for any period of time, even a long awaited piece of furniture or decor item jumps out at me, and almost seems like too much, until I get used to the vacant space being filled. Thanks for the compliments on our backsplash Laura and andreak100! It's the Opera Glass tile from Artistic Tile (Stilatto pattern) in Wolfgang White. It does read greenish-blue(-grey) in certain lights or times of day. We had to think about that one while deciding if we wanted to use it, and obviously decided to go for it! Good luck Laura! I am planning a small kitchen going in this summer and am having the same debate. For cleanliness, I struggle with no backsplash whatsoever. We slop around too much or someone spills and I am always wiping the countertops back to the backsplash. My painted walls would not hold up. You have a better chance of getting away with it with your prep area and sink on the island. I am going with Cambria and what I like about them is they offer a thin backsplash. I am seriously considering the thin Cambria behind the range and 4" up all the way around. I like the look of the thin backsplashes vs the chunky ones that come with granite. If I do decide to tile it is going to be a simple solid, probably small brick pattern that highlights one of the colors in my Cambria. Palimpsest - interesting idea back painting glass especially behind the range. How did you attach it to the wall?

I'm having trouble picturing the supports. Is this something that comes with the hood and is meant to mount on the wall, then the hood mounts to the supports? Because 3/4" seems like a lot of space for even a backsplash to cover. Or is this just the blocking (plywood, usually) necessary to hang it safely? If it's just the lumber blocking needed to hang it securely, that should all be done behind the wall, in the framing of the wall. If this is something that has to go in front of the wall, perhaps you can have a carpenter craft a small "frame" around the back of the hood to hide the supports. You could paint it the color of the wall and it should fade away. Can you attach a picture or a link to the hood and it's schematics?

I have a similar question five years later: Is the 4" matching back splash now out of style? And how long will it stay out of style? Doubt that it would be possible to get a full matching back splash 14 years after the home was built. I am considering removing the 4" back splash and going with a complementary tile or, perhaps, a colorful wallpaper. Thoughts as to how long the short back spash will stay out of style? (I'm old enough to remember bell bottoms - the first time they were in style.)

I would think that you would need cabinets over that type of hood. I could be wrong but I've never seen an under cabinet hood installed without the cabinets above.

I agree with ncamy. You could take the free hood and sell it and then buy what you want.

How are you ducting this hood? The ducts are 10" diameter and unless you can duct it horizontally out the range wall, you'll need to purchase the 12" duct cover. Looking at the technical drawing, it looks like you have to duct it out the top. That means "chimney" to me.

Maybe I am missing something here...

I don't like that Thermador hood, even if it is free. Sell that one and buy one that will be the statement you want it to be with that gorgeous Fire and Ice.

I have a hood similar to that, but no cabinets on either side. If I'm understanding correctly the way you want to do it, you will need to buy a duct cover to put on top of the hood. Do your cabinets go to the ceiling? I think that will make a difference in the overall look.

malhgold--how did I miss that you made your backsplash choice? Looking good! I just put a vertical brick pattern in my husband's shower.

Viennahoosie--I'm not sure the hood you've picked will give you the floating look you want, but I think that a duct cover like Mahlgold's is a good solution, though you'll lose the tile at the top.

Thanks for your opinions everyone. To clarify, I was thinking of something like the picture in the link below but the backsplash would be fire and ice. My cabinets will be a chocolate/dark brown color.

It has a horizontal vent for the 10" duct.

malhgold - yes, I love your lights above the island! So cool. What's the name of your island countertop? Love your faucet too.

I think that it is substantial enough with a great deal of presence and that you will be fine with what you have in mind.
