Malcolm Manners, thank you for pointing out the distinction between the two names. I checked the internet and apparently "biological index" is the general term and the two subterms are herbaceous index and woody index. Davis in their 2004 web article "The Rose Clean Stock Program" use the term "biological index". I am interested in any literature comparing the 2 subterms for rose virus testing. I did find the following for Rubus: "Transmission to herbaceous indicators CRLV, ApMV, BRLV (and indeed TSV in general) can be transmitted by inoculation of sap to herbaceous test plants and can usually be detected in this way. Grind rapidly growing leaves from Rubus plants to be tested in a small volume of 2%, nicotine solution with a little celite as abrasive. Gently rub this sap extract on leaves of young, soft, rapidly growing plants of Chenopodium quinoa and/or Cucumis sativus. Keep test plants in aphid-proof glasshouses at about 20°C and observe for symptoms over about 3 weeks, Symptoms caused by these viruses in inoculated leaves should be apparent in 4-10 days. BRLV and ApMV are probably best detected in very young cucumber cotyledons, but all viruses should induce symptoms in C. quinoa. All four viruses should become systemic in C. quinoa, but some strains of tobacco streak virus (BRLV is a strain of TSV) are not systemic in this host. Woody indicators While the nepoviruses and ilarviruses could be detected by grafting Rubus to woody indicators, there is no purpose in doing so for the alternative methods are much superior. In the case of RLCV, however, this is the only method of detection. Graft scions of test Rubus plants to Rubus phoenicolasius (wineberry) which develops particularly severe symptoms. In general, R. idaeus can also be used. Symptoms may take 2-12 months to appear after graft inoculation. I can't see a reason for the tar paper, but if you have it, why not put it on. I would silicone caulk the space between the concrete and the plastic wood. Ron

oops, hit enter too soon. I almost would like to get all new though because I have to buy a new microhood and want to get all the same and don't know if I want white. DH had mentioned replacing them one at a time but I don't think I want to do that because of the microhood (and because when I get this kitchen done, I want to be done because there are lots of other projects we need to do!)

As far as I am aware, silicone is caulk. There is caulk that is acrylic and caulk that is silicone. In both my bathrooms I used Laticrete silicone caulk for change of planes on my tile. It is matched to my Laticrete grout that I used. Find out what brand grout & color you used and buy the matching silicone grout that the manufacturer offers. When I had contrasting colors between surfaces I choose the color caulk that matched the least level or straight surface. For example my toilet was white and my floor dark. The floor was somewhat rustic and rippley. The toilet was real smooth and straight edged. I used a dark caulk to highlight the clean white edge. If I would have used white, the white would have highlighted the ripply floor surface, which I didn't want to do. I used blue painters tape to line the surfaces before I caulked. Making sure the tape was really close to the edges. I caulked, then ran my finger over the caulk to get a nice finish. I used alcohol on my finger as I ran it along the caulk. I wouldn't spray anything first, before the caulk, as it might make it not stick to the inner tile edge surfaces. Pull the tape right away, before the caulk sets. I would use alcohol on a paper towel to clean up any stray caulk. I know others have said that windex works too. I am no expert, only a few DIY jobs. But this worked for me.
