Let me see your false fronts/beadboard!

I elected to NOT have my builder install false cabinet door fronts or beadboard on my kitchen peninsula as the cost was around $2500 minimum. That's $$ that could be spent elsewhere such as lighting. I figured it would be a good DIY project to cover-up the drywall after we close. Have any of you installed your own (beadboard or false fronts)? I'd like any advice you have to offer. Thanks a bunch!

Here's pic of my peninsula so far (note...this is not the side that needs the beadboard. This side will have actual cabinets.)

We didn't DIY but here's the beadboard on our peninsula. Although it doesn't relate to the cabinet fronts I still like it. I like the effect of one long expanse of beadboard rather than discrete false fronts.

I believe the supports for the countertop were installed on top of the beadboard. So that might be one thing that would interfere with doing it yourself afterwards. Also if you have an outlet it would have to be installed flush with the beadboard, not with the panel behind it.

There are some very good reasons to not do this later.

Matching things is one. Wood changes color over time. Paint will not be the same batch. It won't match well later.

Engineering for countertop support is another. You have to integrate that into the wall, and it's coverings. It's not just about traditional "support" either. You can't get by with a shorter overhang to avoid it. You have a potential leverage tipping situation even with a small overhang.

hey lester: I missed your post. Yes indeed he removed all of the old crumbling mortar back to the sound stuff. He has repointed almost half as of this AM with a type of mortar to prevent any damage to the old brick. I will then seal it. He has done this kind of restoration work for almost 20 years and I have seen how perfect the brick still looks so I am excited to get mine taken care of. fc: I feel the same way. I just sent you an email about the color. prill. About 2 months. It depends on a lot of things. The first part to Maine will be done by late June. If the one guy and gal in our group of 9 want to go on as they have indicated then I will be gone till mid July. Just have to play it by ear. We ride approx 50 miles a day and take off one day a week , Of course stuff happens. LOL. Some of it good and some not so much. We did the 3300 mi from St A to San Diego last yr in 62 days. This is only 2600 mi and then if I add on more. I met so many wonderful people last year. I sent weekly updates to the Conversation side. They have all fallen off though. it was fun to get all the responses. I wish I had printed them out. oceanna: Good to hear from you !!! It will be gorgeous. Now I will HAVE to do something about new cushions for the furniture too...sigh. Always something. Yes the bike ride will be great. We camp the whole way. The angle of that last photo definitely shows the true size of the room....thanks for posting it! I like the blinds since they give a lighter, brighter feel. But hey, that's just my opinion. : ) And.........I have to agree with Caminnc's comment about the cushions re: color vs pattern. You have a lot going on with remodeling, so waiting on the window treatment may be wise at this point. Hanging some simple panels on each side of the window, along with the blinds, would change the whole feel of the room, but I understand you wanting to stay with the current WT. I think the white is 'glaring' at you because of all the other dark colors in the area and it appears to be the only white anywhere except for the flower stand. Finish the rest of the tear-out........and the white may grow on you!

... and don't forget fancy! lol I agree about the blue. I went to Anthropologie today to look at some of those little accessories (jars, sugar bowl, etc) in yellow and aqua and brought the blue bird fabric. Most of them worked well but some of them were too green. It's a pretty blue. I don't think I'll do any other fabrics with turquoise- just if I find a good blue like the birds. It's sooo cute. I love it! My mom loves it too and agrees these work better than the original yellow/black/grey ones. Other ones I showed her she said were too french/formal. She has a good eye for decorating : ) The little bird fabric might be busy for the 6' window but that's why I thought maybe for the lights and then white with a bit of yellow (maybe the pom poms) for the window. I get the dandelions tomorrow (fabric) in the turquoise and girly blue. I think the print is too large though compared to those cute little birds. Maybe in the DR though if I do pillows. We'll see! I liked the tile even more today. They gave me 4 to take home woo-hoo!

Yes I should say my supports aren't SUPPORTED by the beadboard, they're drilled into the secure cabinets THROUGH the beadboard. The beadboard they used in my case is relatively thin.

I could picture applying a simple trim detail like maybe a picture frame molding to a plain base cabinet after countertops go on if need be.

We did our own false doors on the back of the peninsula. Much easier with the countertop off. By the way, love, love, love that chubby B & W kitty! (and the marmalade kitty is cute too, I also have one of each)

robotropolis.....your beadboard looks great! It makes me want to possibly install that instead of false fronts as this would be over 15' of false fronts. My outlets are further down, but you and the others are definitely right about the supports.....hmmm. I like your idea of picture fram molding on plain fronts.

Greendesigns- you're correct about the stain not matching after the fact. My plan was not to match it but possibly do a lighter contrasting color which will tie into the morning room. The kitchen cabinets a cherry java and I don't want to carry more darkness into the morning room as I have built-ins there as well.
