Did you try it with the urethane? That should darken it up and change it quite a bit.

Is it possible the jacobean looks lighter because some of the contrast is gone?

I wanted to tell you two things. Appearances can be deceiving. If the finish layer hasn't yet been applied, it will be difficult to tell what the color will end up being. Wetting can help predict the final result - but let the floor guy do it! He might choose to use a solvent or alcohol over water. If you still hate the color seeing it wet, let the floor guy try his solution.

The second is that the color of the wood itself will change over the first month - six months after the finish is applied. Red oak can be pinky looking, but that will fade on exposure to sun or other sources of UV.

Thanks for your advice, bmorepanic and catbuilder. Our floor guy just finished putting dark walnut over everything and it definitely got rid of the pink tone--thank God!!!!! The dark boxes are still not as dark as I'd like them, so I'm considering re-taping, once it's dry, and re-applying jacobean to just the dark squares. He said the tape should be OK on the stain, in terms of not lifting it, but that it might not stick as well now that the surface is stained. I guess I can try a little patch? Any experience with that?

I know exactly what you were going through. I had to whip
my floor guys into going darker when they did not agree with
me at first. They came around but for a few days my floors
were a hideous orange. I cried and cried with devastation.
Thank goodness GW helped me with images and recipes
to get the right floor color.

GLAD the pink tone is gone. No advice on darkening some of the squares, but why not try a patch test in an unobtrusive place and see what happens.

We had a floor mess on one entire floor of our rowhouse. Patch-tested and Red Mahogany was the stain that looked perfect with already-stained original baseboards and other woodwork. Floor guys put down the first coat on our new white oak flooring, and when it dried, it was purple. I swear, it looked like someone had spilled red wine or grape juice all over the floor. We didn't want to sand again and were concerned a second coat would just deepen the purple. Head floor guy said, lemme try a coat of Jacobean over it to dull down the red, and if that doesn't work, we'll sand and start again. It turned out pefect - rich, deep, just the color we wanted.
