What is acceptable level of defects on new cabinet doors?

I am having my kitchen cabinets refaced with maple veneers and solid raised panel maple doors with a meduim stain. The doors are made by Quality Door company which is sold at both Home Depost and Lowes.

I hired an independent man I'll call T to provide and install them. He has received them and is going to start the install tomorrow. He stopped by today to measure for new drawers he is building and brought a door. He said he just grabbed the top one. The stain looked nice but...

The door had a partical knot on the edge that was rough to the touch and a small scratch I could feel with my fngernail. T said he could fix it but my husband told him a first quality maple door shouldn't have a knot in it. T argued a little but finally said he would see what he could do.

I am very worried now. This was one door, what are the others going to look like? I don't expect perfection, but this door should not have left the factory.

What is acceptable?

Did you see or feel any doors prior to purchase? It's important to see a sample so you know what to expect.

As to the knots? What is acceptable with one company might be totally unacceptable from another. So that is hard to say. When you see the rest of your doors, if you find a few more, then that is probably totally acceptable with that cabinet door company. If that is the ONLY door with a rough knot, then ask for a replacement.

I have 4 cabinet lines in my showroom, the less expensive stock cabinets are definitely different in finish and wood clarity than my semi-custom or custom cabinets.

Knots do occur in natural wood products....but maple doesn't usually have big knots unless it's a 'character maple'.

Some minor touch ups are also to be expected. T should be careful when grabbing a door to carry around. He could've scratched it himself.

I tried to goole Quality Door Company, but only found the link below. Is this the same company? It says "Quality Doors".

T had a maple door he showed me but it had a different stain. I looked at the doors at both Home Depost and Lowes and they looked good.

He had the door wrapped up and unwrapped it when he showed it to us.

The brochure I have from the company says on the back they are a member of the Masco family of companies that include Delta and KraftMaid. They are in Cedar Hill Texas.

The builders trim guy installed the cabinets. When I asked the builders other guy about adjusting them - he is the one that said it cant be done. When the cabinets were installed - before the granite came. I was clear with the cabinet installer that they MUST BE LEVEL. He said they were and that he knew I was getting granite so all was perfect. So why are a couple of drawers out of sink? Can anyone give me the answer that I want to hear - that yes, they can be adjusted to be level? I also called the guy that I ordered the cabinets from - just to see what he thinks. He will be down in a couple of weeks to deliver a few odds and ends and 2 new doors that the installer screwed up. MEN !!!

thanks for checking in :) we're...creeping along. we got our new fridge panel - yippee! but we're still missing a desk area upper and a bunch of other things that are making it difficult to do things like install backsplash or under cabinet lights. electrician was here today to wire the under cab lights that can actually be installed. and work on wiring the appliances. but he didn't get as far as i would have hoped. we still have no running water on the first floor. i was promised it would happen by end of this week and now it's by end of next week. our new kitchen dining table was delivered and sitting in our family room because our front hallway is chock-full with boxes of bathroom fixtures and our fridge. i'm really, really, REALLY over living like this. really. but i'm praying it will be better in the next few weeks. we are supposedly getting all our random missing cabinets and missing pieces - there are so many - by next Tuesday keeping my fingers crossed!! anyway, thanks for asking! :)

What is an Acceptable Slope on a New Floor in an Old Home?

We have discussed, it keeps going back to the scope, with leveling the floor not being in scope. I do understand that in an old home, floors will not be level. In this case, I did expect a new flat floor with no bumps in the surface. I did not measure the level of the original floor, however, it was tiled and I never noticed any slope over this area, there were large tiles over it and would be cracked I think. I have pictures that show this. Here is a picture that shows what we have now, this is a 4 foot level with the far, left side of the photo hovering over the old section of the floor, the right side is on the newer, 40 year old section, shims under cabinets in the distance. Thoughts?

Normally it isn’t needed to add additional piece behind the face frame(I marked as number 2). But he did and put pocked holes and screws on the number 2 piece, so the face frame (number 1) is weak. That picture is too close-up. I don't know what is what. I will say that pocket holes and screws in the case behind the face frame indicates how/ where the FF is attached to the carcass. I would like to see pictures of the assembled, unpainted boxes before they made the first road trip. What is clear is that these boxes have been bounced around in a trailer on more than one occasion and we don't know anything about the different climate conditions along the way nor how long they may have been subjected to cold, extreme cold, low humidity, heat, high humidity. We don't know how they were moved but they do show signs of being mishandled, even manhandled as in those popped glue joints. Perhaps exacerbated by poor climate control conditions. One possibility not yet mentioned is that the cabinet builder may have used some hybrid FF system. Like a full outside perimeter frame only and attached separate rails and stiles to the case for the interior divisions. But the photos are all too close up and out of context to determine if that is a possibility with these particular cabs. IMO, when the customer picked the cabinets up to haul to the painter, customer accepted the cabinets--having ample opportunity to inspect them as they were being loaded & unloaded. I can't see how the cabinet maker is responsible for the cabinets some however many weeks, miles, uncertain climate control conditions and handlings after they left his shop.

I looked at the link again and that is the company. I got the cafe color on the maple doors.

He's here! I just looked at about half the doors. They are beautiful. Maybe he went through them last night and touched them up or maybe it was just that one door. No knots and I didn't see any scratches.

I am feeling MUCH better!
