The kitchen reno made me fat

The kitchen reno has helped me gain so much weight, with so many good excuses. First, we weren't cooking our normal good food. It was pizza, and eating out, and dinner at friend's where you have to eat everything. Then anytime there was stress-like -Will they show up? OMG more money! There is dust everywhere. I can't find my cell in this mess! etc. - I grabbed more food. Then once we had a cooktop and oven there was a cooking and baking frenzy, followed by Thanksgiving. I don't think I can wait till after the holidays to get back to real life. Tomorrow is hit the market day for fruits and veggies and maybe I will be able to get back into my jeans by the New Year.

I hear ya sixty! My remodel hasn't even started yet and I've probably gained ten pounds from all the decisions and second guessing!

Yes! It happened to me after our summer-long remodel. And it doesn't get better, because once you have your nice new kitchen- you just want to cook all sorts of deliciousness. My saving grace came in the form of a stomach flu.

pinch_me, yes he does have hypothyroidism, 2x daily meds (compounded into a cat treat which he loves so that's not too hard to deal with). He's about to turn 18! One interesting thing that remodeling did for him - he no longer fears strangers. He just looks at them with this good grief not again look on his face and goes back to sleep. He used to run for a good hiding place at the sound of the door bell. And, weed, the countertops do pretty much match the cat, although he doesn't have any shiny black pieces or fools gold in him. He's very much in love with the prep sink faucet too. There was another thread here that had some cats matching the granite. Pretty funny.

A great frugal but delicious dish is homemade vegetable soup made with cheap soup bones. Bake the bones first to give them a little color, then put them into a large kettle well covered with water, add garlic, onions, seasonings, simmer until bones are falling apart, several hours. Then add your favorite vegs. I like chopped cabbage, celery, carrots, garbanzos, zucchini, potato, sweet potato, corn on the cob, tomato. You can add lean meat if you want, I now also add bouillon cubes, just watch added salt. Divide it into refrigerator containers, discard bare bones. When cool, remove any fat that accumulates on top. Then I freeze in pint or serving size containers. My kids and DH have always loved this. This is great with fresh rolls or bread and can feed an army with very little meat. You can also add tofu to increase protein. My mom used to make soup like this but she used chicken feet which she got free from meat processors nearby. They cooked up faster but the bones were also always free, sometimes they even had meat on them.

while i don't think you should go into debt etc i do hope you don't give up your dream for a new kitchen. if you need to move things around, pay to have that done and get your cabs in. set up a temp/mini kitchen somewhere - microwave, toaster oven. meals won't be what dh is used to til done - and that's ok. he will live.lol! I found -back when I was married - and sister says her dh is the same - that men don't like an idea coming from dw - but it's a fine idea when THEY come up with it. often (I found and so does she) that a few wks or so later he suddenly has this GREAT idea - exactly what I/she already brought up! lol! men... if you have to go with laminate for a few yrs - they have some awesome laminate now. I don't want granite /tile because I drop stuff so much (daily) and the tile also because of my feet/legs/back. and there's the habitat restore. I'm even gonna go there next fall and look myself - just in case they have something I can use. I know what I want my cabs to look like and if they have them - great! while your kitchen is torn up for 'rearranging' and cabs - do the ceiling and whatever else you can get done. I'm not really doing enough i think to hire a gc (tho dbf would be that anyway - as he has done that most of his life) but I do have an electrician I can call (dbff's brother) and plumber (the sub on my sister's house does work on the side). other than that dbf and i (not much help from me tho) will do it with the help of his son (I think) and one of his workmen (maybe). I'm thinking of hiring my neighbor boy (18) to clean it up and paint for me. if he can lay a laminate wood floor, i might pay him to do that... but depending on what all needs done, maybe you can sub it out? I do think bids from other subs is a good idea. surely another 1 or 2 around there also have a good reputation and you just haven't heard about them - yet. btw - did you say that engine cost 52K?

The angled corner is noticeable in the plan view., but not so much in the elevation view rendering. However in real life, I think the angled corner will be unattractive and I would not do it. During our kitchen remodel, we cut down the peninsula bar to counter height, but could not move walls or cabinet footprint. At one point of the peninsula, the cabinet and countertop edge are 32” and 31” respectively from one point on a dividing wall at the passage lane from the dining area to the kitchen. It is just one point on the end of the wall and has never been an eyesore or issue. It is a trade off. The larger island is better than the smaller island for scale and your desired use. The island is prettier than the peninsula, if you can fit it. The wall corner is the exterior wall so it can’t be moved or torn down. So after reconsidering the pros and cons, I think the “narrower than ideal“ passage opening, at one point on the wall corner, will not be a big deal for you. The house plans show a window in the area where I thought a pantry should go, so I see that is not an option. What you may want to reconsider is if you can swap the fridge and stove wall. Moving the range hood to the exterior wall would facilitate venting, unless you already have a venting system in your wall I the location as shown.

Too funny... I was the opposite! All summer we ate off the small and mid sized Royal Chinet, and had a sparse "pantry" on my dining room sideboard. So without having easy access to snacks, baking, etc., plus taking smaller portions (helped by smaller plates) I actually went down 10+ lbs! Best my summer clothes fit in years.

Unfortunately I have a huge pantry now and the effects are obvious! :(

Hee hee! The kiss of death for my waistline was when the kitchen sink went back in and I no longer had to make 500 trips up and down the basement stairs to the laundry sink. Not to mention the 1/2 hour squats I had to remain in because my back would go out a few minutes into dish washing sessions...

Mine was a wash for a while from all the painting I had to do which counteracted the restaurant food. Now, I am tired of working on the house and cooking again, so I have put on a few.

I'm SO with you! I've definitely been seeking out the comfort foods. And getting tired of my fat clothes! Bring on the naked salads, skinny lattes/black coffee and fat free cottage cheese.

This is one reason I hesitate to embark on remodeling our kitchen. The only major remodel we've ever done is having our old pipes replaced (just about a week in duration), heating/ac replaced (only 4 or 5 days) and having the pool replastered and the driveway and pool deck torn out. It was a mess but it was all outside.

We've been on the 17-day diet for what seems like 117 years and I'd hate to fall off the wagon and start making midnight Nerds runs (I'm a stress-eater as well).

The more I think about it - we've become such Spartan eaters that we really don't need to remodel the kitchen. At least not to cook or eat in it.

I'm in the same boat and was wondering if there was a weight loss forum for help with post traumatic bathroom/kitchen remodel weight gain help. I'm beyond sick about the weight I have put on, have a very negative opinion of myself right now for it and seem unable to do a thing about it. OMG!!! I hate this, I have nothing to wear and come up with the most crazy concoctions of whatever I can find in the closet. My self confidence is at an all time low. I feel your pain...

I gained so much weight during our house project. Living in a weird place, eating out, etc etc. You'll be happy to know that once normalcy returns, things come back to normal quickly. I forgot how much I loved simple steamed veggies and grilled chicken but after months of eating out, it tasted like heaven!

Amen, sisters! Our normal healthy eating habits fell victim to months of being without a sink or stove. Frozen pizza, subs, and fast food were the only way to survive. Add to that my treadmill in the basement was buried with all the stuff that normally resides in the kitchen cabinets.

I knew we were in trouble when my son came home from college and told us it was like being back in the dorms.
