My vote goes for the 30" single basin sink. Even without the off-center consideration, my vote would be the same.

One big basin makes it so much easier to wash and rinse things like large baking sheets or roasting pans. A single basin is also easier to clean up, especially if you have a disposer. You just sluice everything into the drain and grind it up. With a double sink, you always have to clean the strainer on the basin without the disposer.

One thing for sure, you're not going to find consensus here on this topic. There's just as many double-sink fans posting here as single-basin fans. Preference depends on what you're used to, and how you work.

If you don't have a particular preference -- go for symetry. An off-center sink would bug the heck out of me.

James is right! No consensus on this topic...it's simply a matter of preference. Pros & Cons for both. But, I vote for the double bowl sink :-)

I prefer to have two bowls...it allows you to put dirty dishes in one side and still be able to use the second, you can also soak things in one sink, or if you hand wash dishes you can fill one bowl w/soapy water for washing and use the other bowl for rinsing w/o overflowing or diluting the soapy water.

Wow...we just went through this. To be centered under the window I had to have one large sink...so I got it..and I LOVE IT. Large pots fit inside to clean and also It made me break the habit of putting dirty dishes in the sink and leaving them there because I always had the other side I could use. Now, I put them right in dishwasher. But seriously....you can't have your sink off centered...that would look strange.

I would pick single bowl and not worry about being off-center. I guess I can say that b/c that's the decision we went with for our remodel. The old sink was off-center AND a double bowl (which didn't fit the large pans). The replacement's not terribly off-center and getting single bowl was definitely my priority :-)

I like and have two bowls (the 1-3/4 kind) for the reasons Buehl mentions above.

I don't understand why a one-bowl sink would be centered under your window any differently than a two bowl sink is.
Unless of course if you mean you have a small window and are using a 1-3/4 sink that it is that the FAUCET is what won't be centered. THAT does not look odd as long as the SINK is centered. If you have a substantially wider window (than your sink), none of the centering matters.

I have a double right now but am switching to single - just like the idea of one great big sink that everything can fit into and like the look. Hope I won't regret the switch ... Here's a long thread about this:

The nice thing about a single bowl sink is how easy it is to make it a double bowl by using a dishpan. I wouldn't have anything else. When you need the big sink, you've got it, and for daily use, the dishpan gives a place for dishes, etc and keeps them corralled in one place.

I'm also another single sink convert. It never occurred to me to have one until I happened upon this forum. I love the flexibility--I use a small tub to "function" like 2 separate sinks when I'm actively washing or soaking but because there is no divider messing things up, I usually have room for an additional function--i.e. things soaking in the tub of soapy water on one side, stuff draining in a colander on the other side and still free room in the drain area for running water to rinse things off or for putting down a pot or for peeling veggies or for a second colander for pasta. And I love the large space when the tub is out of the sink, during most of prep time. I feel as though I have the control over my sink rather than some predetermined barrier having the control. I don't miss having 2 extra surfaces that need to be cleaned (the 2 sides of the barrier.)

single single single! I LOVE my single bowl sink. And like the above posters mentioned, you can always turn a single bowl into a double (with a dishpan) but you can NEVER turn a double bowl into a single!

i wouldn't make the deciding factor based on centered or off centered. you should decide which of the sinks you prefer. imo, there's really not that much difference between a 30" or a 33". the real choice is a double or single bowl. i had a double bowl installed in our last house and i hated it. i do a lot of baking and roasting and could never soak a pan without total mess since i'd have to fill it with water and then put it back on the counter to sit. i'm installing a 30" single bowl in the new house.

I'll add my vote to the single basin side. Last house, we replaced counter-hogging 3-basin with a smaller 2-basin--huge increase in counterspace and basin size. This house, we started out with the grungy 25+ year old ss 2-basin. Replaced that with 1-basin utility tub (converted the galley kitchen to laundry room) and installed gorgeous black "granite" Pegasus sink in new kitchen. LOVE single basins! As noted above, you can use a dishpan to get the 2-basin benefit, but it's so great to have SPACE in the sink for the pots & pans to soak, for the colander, and even a few dirty dishes before they get transferred to the dw.
