Filler needed behind slide-in range

Hi all ...

I remodeled our kitchen in 2002 but didn't replace the slide-in range, which was eight years old at the time. It's broken down now, and I've come to discover there's no slide-in just as deep to replace it.

I'm going to need a filler between the back of the new slide-in range and the existing cut out in the countertop. Having thought about it from this and that points of view, I'm reasonably convinced the simplest solution would be an L shaped piece of stainless steel (which would nicely match the stainless vent hood above the range).

The L shaped piece of steel needs to be roughly 32" long by 4.5" deep (to cover the gap) by 5" or so tall (actually the height on the wall behind the range is optional as can be).

Before I have this custom fabricated, I'm writing to ask whether anyone has faced a similar problem and found a ready made solution.

Contact the manufacturer of the range. Many of them make an optional filler you can purchase.

Make sure whoever installs the strip behind the range uses a support of some kind. At our beach house, they simply glued it to the wall. Guess what? It fell off. Fortunately, we were able to fish it out from behind the range without moving it and installed it properly ourselves!

DON'T TAKE THE GRANITE STRIP OUT! You do not have to use the metal strip that comes with the new slide-in stove, it is an optional piece (for somebody who had a free-standing stove to begin with). The back of the stove top will just slide over the top of the granite strip already in place--just like it did with your old stove.

All the comments are concerned about how much a counter top overlaps the actual base cabinet which is 24" deep in most cases. The counter will hang over the cabinet another inch (0'-1") so the depth would be 25". What nobody has mentioned is the actual depth of the range itself. For example, an LG range's depth dimension is 29-9/32", so this range is going to protrude 4 to 5 inches past the cabinets and counter installed as-is already. Most of the slide-in ranges are built for ZERO clearance at the back, and are designed to sit flush against the wall. If you are installing a true "drop-in" range, then you would most likely need a strip of counter at the back because this design necessitates it. These are "slide-in" ranges, that are designed to fit into the space a conventional range would normally fit. If you add a 1-2" strip of counter top behind a slide-in, your range will protrude 6-7" past the counter top. It will look kind of ridiculous how far out it will protrude if this is done. If you want a more integrated look, do a drop-in range, which are harder to find, and not as nice looking as the newer slide-in type. Or just do a flat top and a separate over unit.

I’ve only skimmed the comments, but I was just about to say the same thing as Chessie—that the range you’re describing where the sides of cooktop sit on top of the countertops next to them used to be known as drop-in style, but nowadays some slide-ins—like the dual-fuel Bosch mentioned above—also have cooktops that sit on top of the countertops, so the verbiage is a bit muddled these days...or maybe it’s my brain that’s muddled. :) Edited to add that as far as cleanability (Apple is telling me that’s not a word because it’s underlined in red dots & is suggesting it be changed to “clean ability,” but, whatever) goes, a conventional slide-in (i.e., the sides are unfinished, controls are in the front and the cooktop sides do not sit on top of the countertop) or freestanding range is about the same or maybe even better in that department: With a slide-in or freestanding, crud goes into the crevice and you do your best to keep it kinda clean until you slide it out during your annual or semi-annual deep cleaning. With a drop-in, crud goes underneath the overlying cooktop sides and then gets pushed into that crevice while you’re doing your best to keep it kinda clean until—wait!: You can’t slide it out; it’s on a freaking platform—well, mine is, anyway. :/ P.S. If anyone was able to pick up what I was laying down in the preceding gobbledygook, I’m impressed.

I replaced my freestanding range with a slide in range. (At some point we will remodel the entire kitchen - cabinets and countertops - but for now we needed to replace the dying appliances.) My range came with a black metal filler piece. Unfortunately it wasn't quite large enough, so I added an extra wood filler piece painted black. Find out if the range you've selected comes with a filler piece and whether it will fit the empty space. If not, and you're not planning to replace the countertops, definitely have someone fabricate a larger piece.

Yes, pricklypear, I'm in the same boat you were. The provided filler doesn't fit the space, nor have a I found one anwyhere on the Internet. That's how I've come to conclude a stainless L is the best solution.

I'm figuring there must be a provider out there somewhere with various sizes available. If not, I'll have it fabricated.

Could you get a piece of your countertop material and run it behind the range, with the countertop guy doing the seams so it looks like that piece was always there?

Ideagirl, yes, absolutely ... I could replace the counter section myself. It's porcelain tile and I saved a box for just such contingencies. That stated, I'd prefer an easy/quick fix rather than cutting out old tile, replacing, etc.

Thanks twosit, I will pursue that link. Thus far in looking at manufacturers of "fill" pieces, the pieces are set sizes (which is kind of curious, given the nature of the problem).

Still haven't found a source for stainless L pieces on the Internet. The saga continues!

Any decent sheet metal shop can bend up what you want.

I stopped [purchasing the stainles splash plates to go behind stoves from the manufacturers years ago.

The sheet metal shop I use can usually make one for no more than half the price.

You might consider having a small shelf with three turned down edges and one turned over edge (folded back 180 degrees under the length).

You could then attach to the back of the stove and a ledger strip on the wall to match the turned over edge height for support.
If mounted so the top is just below the back if the stove it will not show much. just on each side from the counter up and from the back of the stove to the wall.

I have had items like this made multiple times now.

Don't forget to tell the shop the scratch pattern ('grain') direction for brushed stainless you want .. the long way looks best.
