98% finished kitchen. Lots of before and after pictures

We are finally finished with the exception of a few things here and there. Our kitchen involved a bump out of our family room and kitchen with full kitchen reno. We had quite a few headaches with a dropped beam and 2 structural columns that we arched out and finished in brick. I love the way the brick turned out.....it helped me achieve the rustic look I was going for. Thank you to all you kind people who gave advice and helped along the way. I am so happy to have my home back after 8 months.

wow!!!!!! i was kind of nervous because i thought the before pics were actually the AFTER pics!!!! and then i saw the change! looks great!!!!!! i love the contrast of the black and white and red!

Thanks for all the kind words! GW was a great resource all the way through the planning and then the "doing"! Just a couple examples - until I posted a question about which mullions I should choose for glass front cabinets, it never had occurred to me that I had far more choices than plain glass. Now every time I open my cabinets, I smile - I do love the river ice! And because I had always had them, I started my plan with lower cabinets but thanks to GW I changed to all drawers. I love having all my pots, pans, mixing bowls, and small appliances in deep drawers. No more pulling everything out to get the one thing in the back. When we were house hunting, I dreamed of a huge eat-in kitchen with an antique butcher block, but I'm really enjoying cooking in this cozy space with everything so close at hand. mabeldingeldine: We're not Mainers, we just wish we were! We take a trip to the mid-coast area every summer. We got married there and got the Common Ground poster that year - it was also the perfect addition to my kitchen chicken collection! t-bird: Getting the Scherr's doors didn't save any money but I was able to get exactly what I wanted - I just didn't love the finish/materials on any of the white Ikea doors. I posted a breakdown of my costs on the "Under $20k Kitchens thread". I've still got some little paint touch-ups to do, and I need to put some trim where the backsplash ends but it's so nice to have a kitchen that really works. birdly... makes total sense that you had to redo stuff if it were that one employee - you should have heard the subcontractors complain about that employees work :) The nice thing is Mark had them redo stuff without argument - a friends contractor fought him and tried to charge him on every little thing that he asked to be redone (and we are talking some obvious things) If you want I can let him know that my glowing review of his work was slightly tainted by a deck that took too long - he won't like that! Its sad that he was late for yours becuase both the person at international kitchens and the person I got the sink from commented on how hes on time. For me he was about 1 month late but given the circumstances that was not bad. Its surprising about the communication - he was great for me. It does sound like he was putting all his effort into my project - did you let him know that you were doing a kitchen and becuase he didn't handle the small project well he misses out on the bigger one? (FYI the contractor that was awful for my friend was Chermak construction - it was a 100k+ project and they tried to charge him when the electrician put in a 3 bank switch that only needed 2 switches so the electrician left a switch that did nothing - they told my friend that a "do nothing" switch was an "acceptable solution" - that was the worst example but there were tons of things like that). I am 95% sure Mark got the doors through PCS Millwork. They were WAY cheaper (talking less than 1/2) the cost of the equivalent doors through the lumber yard he normally uses. gwent, nightowl was asking about the dining lights - if you search (ctrl+f) the thread for "nightowl" and read those posts you should get all the details on the lights. For the pulls, believe it or not we got them at Loews. I went to all the fancy shops for a couple weeks stressing about hardware and finally stumbled on them at Loews of all places.

This is the kitchen that has been in my brain for at least 10 years, and here you have gone and done it perfectly!!! I'm going to Pinterest the bejebbers out of it as inspiration photos for the coming renovations (as soon as I finish all these pesty bathrooms!). Seriously, I have wanted a 4 oven Aga plus a module for ages. I already have the full 601 fridge & freezer (so a little bigger than your Subzero.) And I plan to put a big barrel hood over it all. And you have a big island with not huge aisles! And you have soapstone! I really think we're channeling the same frequencies. I'm totally in love with your butler's pantry! We didn't inherit one, but I may use the cabinet sliding door idea for the walk-thru pantry I'm planning. It solves my problem of a tight space and not really wanting all open shelves! Ok, I'm off to study this kitchen more deeply! Truly, I know this reveal is several years past now, but wow just the same! Great job! Always ;-) Hunzi

sdionnemoore, I posted the pictures in the decorating forum - hope they help! Judy, the instructions from Jenn- Air are not that great! Lucky DH installed our last doors so he was helpful explaining things to the cabinet installer. The custom panels were made large enough to cover the outside stainless trim (old house they were smaller and that trim showed - I like it this way better). The door require a 1/4" backer board, which they veneered to be finished on the exposed edge. These side into the Stainless "grooves". I am not sure if the drilled the holes for the handles through the custom door AND the backer board - or if just through the custom doors. I think it was just through the doors but I will ask when the installer returns this week. I think they had to either screw or glue the custom panels onto the 1/4" backer board. Everything is nice and tight, no wiggle at all. Hope these pictures help. phoggie, I hope to be posting a few photo's of the house in just a couple days! I'll be posting them on the building forum, and I know I'll direct a few over on the decorating board as well! I am almost unpacked - needs lots of decorating, blinds, etc... but I'll get there! Started getting nervous when I saw the before pictures as I thought they were the after pictures. I was going why did she keep the coil electric burners? Maybe she couldn't afford a new stove....Pictures look kinda dark....

Then I see the after. Beautiful! Love the cabs and the red granite. What cooktop is that? Looks like it is fun to cook on it. Love the other choices and the brick. French doors are beautiful and I LOVE the dining room table. Who makes it? At first I thought it was black stone until I looked further and saw it was glass.

Do you just love your sink? Really pretty! I too love the pop of the red. Are the floors original? Would love the details!

Great job and congrats. You have to just be thrilled!

I also thought the before pictures were the after pictures. Then I noticed the old electric coil stove.

I thought the before kitchen looked nicer than most kitchens I see in real life, however, the new one is a big difference. You did reuse the ovens and dishwasher, right? They're the same, I'm not imagining that? I love that you reused what was working for you and changed the rest. Nice job!

Beautiful job! I know how you agonized over the dropped beam and the granite choice and I think it all looks fantastic. The granite looks beautiful with the brick, not pink at all. Everything came together so nicely.
